China at center of the global gold eco-system

April 15, 2014 - 17:35 AMT

PanARMENIAN.Net - China's demand for gold is set to rise by about 20% over the next few years, the World Gold Council has estimated, as the population becomes more wealthy, according to BBC News.

The council estimates private sector demand for gold in China will rise to at least 1,350 tonnes by 2017.

Chinese customers bought 1,132 tonnes of gold last year, in jewellery as well as gold bars and coins for investment.

The forecast comes as China becomes the world's largest gold-consuming nation since last year, overtaking India.

The World Gold Council says China is at the "center of the global gold eco-system", as rapid urbanisation creates a rising middle class.

Albert Cheng, from the World Gold Council, said: "The cultural affinity for gold runs deep in China and when this is combined with an increasingly affluent population and a supportive government, there is significant room for the market to grow even further. Whilst China faces important challenges as it seeks to sustain economic growth and liberalise its financial system, growth in personal incomes and the public's pool of savings should support a medium term increase in the demand for gold, in both jewellery and investment."

According to the council, consumers bought a record amount of gold last year, with Asia's economic heavyweights China and India in the top two spots.

In Western markets demand for the precious metal remained strong, particularly in the US, where people bought a lot of gold jewellery as well as gold bars and coins.

British beaches are cleaner than ever

In 2008, 2009 and 2012 beaches in Britain suffered as unusually wet summer weather caused more pollution to run onto beaches at ground level and via overloaded sewers.

In contrast, last years summer was the driest on record, leading to much lower levels of contamination.

Met Office data suggests the early summer in Britain is more likely to be unusually wet than unusually dry, however, which could lead to another increase in pollution.

By 2015 all beaches will be required to meet at least the minimum sufficient standard under the EU Bathing Water Directive, which is about twice as tough as the current standard.

Beaches which do not make the grade will have to feature prominent signs warning visitors against bathing from the summer of 2016 onwards.

Rachel Wyatt, Coastal Pollution Officer for the MCS, said: It's great news that we are able to recommend more beaches than ever for excellent water quality and it shows just how good British beaches can be.

The main challenge now is maintaining these standards, whatever the weather.

Most people don't realise what a big impact the weather can have on bathing water quality.

Some of Englands best-loved beaches could be turned into no-go zones for swimmers under tough new EU rules.

Tourism bosses predict a disaster for local businesses if popular resorts are placed on an environmental blacklist over water quality.

When the new European directive is enforced in May 2015, the rules on water safety will become twice as stringent overnight, rendering dozens of beaches which are currently safe off-limits for swimmers.

Warning: Tourism bosses warn the new rules could be disastrous for local businesses across Britain's coast

Lunar eclipse: Crowds descend on observatory for 'blood moon'

Bob Alborzian was a child when his father first showed him the Milky Way galaxy through the lens of a telescope, leading to a lifelong love of astronomy.

Now 69, Alborzian was on hand with his own homemade telescope Monday night at the Griffith Observatory, where he and hundreds of others awaited the blood moon, the first total eclipse of 2014.

The eclipse, which will peak early Tuesday, will be the first in more than three years to be visible from Los Angeles and uninterrupted by sunrise. In Los Angeles, the most impressive part will begin at 10:58 p.m. when the first bite is taken out of the moon. It will be blotted out entirely at 12:06 a.m. Tuesday, said experts at the observatory.

As the bite spreads across the moon, it will transform into a dark blood moon. The dark red hue will come from the light of sunsets and sunrises over the rest of the Earth.

Griffith Observatory will remain open to visitors, who can look up at the eclipse either from the building or from the grass and sidewalk areas. Experts will provide presentations on the eclipse.

The homemade telescope through which Alborzian planned to view the eclipse had an 8-inch lens and was constructed out of cardboard. The telescope rotated because its bottom was made from an old jazz record. Others who had come to view the eclipse peeked inside the telescope, which was covered in newspaper clippings about Ella Fitzgerald, Sam Cooke and the Beatles.

I only cover it in good music, said Alborzian, a member of Sidewalk Astronomers, an amateur astronomy association.

The crowds descended upon the Observatory early, with hundreds of people lounging on the lawn hours before the eclipse was set to begin. Families passed the time with picnics and throwing baseballs.

The observatory and the Los Angeles Astronomical Society, as well as other astronomy clubs and organizations, offered telescopes for viewers.

Heven Renteria, 31, said he fell in love with the sky at age 6 while visiting the observatory with his mother. Gazing at the stars while overseas serving as a Marine brought him back to astronomy as a hobby.

THE STARGAZING event at Pico de Loro. JILL LEJANO

PICO de Loro in the early morning sun

As young as 5 years old, Rogel Mari Sese knew he wanted to be an astronomer.

It was a book from his scientist parents (his mom is a molecular biologist and his father is into chemistry and science communications) that started his love affair with space. One of the very first books I had was about astronomy and space flight.

His parents encouraged his passion, giving him his first telescope when he was eight. That sustained my interest. I still have it. Its a relic, it has sentimental value.

By age 13, he knew he wanted to be an astrophysicist, a dream he has turned now into reality.

He studied applied physics at the University of the Philippines in Los Baos, got his masters degree in physics from UP Diliman and, on a scholarship, got his doctorate in computational astrophysics from Japans University of Tsukuba.

Today, Dr. Sese is one of just three astrophysicists in the country, representing the Philippines in international conferences and organizations including the International Astronomical Union, the Universe Awareness Program by the EU-UNAWE and Galileo Teacher Training Program.

ST. THERESE of the Child Jesus Chapel is an air-conditioned glass chapel overlooking the West Philippine Sea, with a view deck where you can admire the Pico de Loro Cove and surrounding mountains. The chapel was designed by Filipino-American architect Carlos Arnaiz who is based in New York.

He is chairperson of the Southeast Asian Young Astronomers Collaboration and president of Regulus Spacetech Inc., a space technology research and development company he started. Regulus Spacetech is also in space education.
