Deadline set for sterilization claims

People who were unknowingly sterilized by North Carolinas Eugenics Board program have until June 30 to submit a claim for compensation.

The state Office for Justice of Sterilization Victims, which received 376 claim forms from potential Eugenics Board sterilization victims, as of March 31. Among those, 199 were forwarded to the N.C. Industrial Commission to determine whether the claimants are eligible for compensation.

It is heartening that people are coming forward and making claims," Gov. Pat McCrory said in a statement. While the physical and emotional effects of forced sterilization are immeasurable, compensation is a small tangible way of showing support for the burdens they were forced to carry.

The 2012 Governors Eugenics Compensation Task Force found that 7,600 North Carolinians many of whom were poor, sick or disabled were sterilized by force or coercion under the authorization of the Eugenics Board from 1929-74.

Females made up 85 percent of sterilization victims in North Carolina. Blacks and Native Americans made up 40 percent, according to the task forces report. Task force researchers found some victims or their families were threatened with losing welfare benefits.

The Office of Justice for Sterilization Victims, established last year as part of the Department of Administration, is collecting documentation and helping individuals with their claims. Completed forms and documentation are sent to the Industrial Commission, which determines eligibility. The state is providing $10 million in compensation to be divided equally among certified living claimants. The payout is scheduled for June 30, 2015.

For more information, including claim forms, visit the Office for Justice of Sterilization Victims online or call (919) 807-4270.

Eco-friendly house built to attract tourists to Bohol

A NEWLY-BUILT house made mainly of earth serves as the latest tourist attraction in Barangay Aguipo, Mabini, Bohol.

Former residents Teresito and Marnie Malicse with daughter Sheelah initiated this endeavor as part of a project to refine and develop the barangays tourism potential.

The architectural innovation called Heritage House System includes a main house and an emergency shelter dome.

Heritage House is a long-term durable structure following timeless architectural principles with a foundation that is stable yet lightweight and flexible, allowing earth movement as well as powerful water and winds to go through and inhabitants to get out while keeping it affordable, the Malicses said in their press release.

The main house is made of earth blocks piled together and can be customized.

'Energy-efficient'

The dome, which is made of earth placed inside sandbags, can withstand an 8.2-magnitude earthquake, based on tests conducted by Cal-Earth Institute in California.

The dome, which can fit about 40 adult-sized people, is also typhoon resistant, making use of aerodynamic principles, which enable it to endure strong winds and rains.

We were piling the earth blocks after molding. Then it started to rain which lasted for three straight days. Nature will test it. After three days, the house was still standing, Sheelah said during her presentation of the project.

This type of home is energy-efficient with its high amount of thermal mass, keeping the interior cool and insulating it from the heat outside.

Lifeguards warn North Devon beachgoers of dangers caused by winter storms

Comments(2)

AS LIFEGUARDS return to North Devons beaches this Easter, visitors are being warned of dangers caused by severe winter storms.

Bad weather has changed many of the areas beaches, with strong rip currents resulting from the movement of large amounts of sand.

RNLI lifeguards will be patrolling beaches this Easter including Croyde and Woolacombe.

Lifeguard manager Brett Shepherd said: Were really pleased to be providing cover on beaches around the UK over the Easter period.

Now that spring has officially sprung we hope people will head down to the coast and enjoy our wonderful beaches.

However, the winter storms have changed the make-up of some beaches and many returning to their favourite spots may be surprised at how different everything looks.

Sand dunes have been washed away at some beaches leaving sheer sand cliffs, access points to and from some beaches have changed and shifting sand has left deep channels which can cause strong rip currents.

Mr Shepherd said: Wed urge anyone planning on visiting a beach over the Easter holidays to check local information in advance and head to a life-guarded beach.

Swimmers should ensure that they swim between the red and yellow flags, which mark out the safest area to swim and are patrolled by lifeguards. Please take heed of the safety signage and any advice offered by the lifeguards on duty.
