Liberty County judge, wife hurt in crash; teen held in suspected DWI

A Liberty County judge and his wife were injured in a head-on collision with an alleged drunk driver near U.S. 90 Saturday morning

County Judge Craig McNair and Lisa McNair were taken by Life Flight to Memorial Hermann Hospital after a 17-year-old driving a 2007 Ford Expedition veered into their lane and struck their 2012 GMC pickup shortly after midnight Saturday.

German Mata fled to his home a mile away after the crash. His brother, Edgar Mata, 21, arrived at the scene after the accident and told officers he was the driver of the Expedition, Liberty County Sheriff's Office spokesman Capt. Ken DeFoor said.

Lisa McNair was treated for a fractured leg and Craig McNair was treated for cuts and bruises. DeFoor said the McNair's injuries could have been more severe had it not been for the airbags in their truck deploying. There was extensive damage to both vehicles, he said.

The Expedition had flashing red and blue emergency lights attached to it, DeFoor said. It is not known why German had attached them to his SUV. He said the lights can mimic those found on a law enforcement vehicles.

The 17-year-old, found later at his home asleep, was charged with failure to stop and render aid, improper use of lights, and driving without a license. He only sustained minor injuries in the crash that did not require treatment. His older brother was charged with making a false report to an officer and public intoxication.

Both were taken to the Liberty County jail.

Japan to build military site near disputed islands

Japan has begun construction work on a military radar station near a string of islands that is at the centre of a territorial dispute with China.

Correspondents say the move will anger Beijing as it may allow Japan to expand surveillance near the Chinese mainland.

The new base on Yonaguni island is located just 150km (90 miles) from the Japanese-held Senkaku island group, claimed by China as the Diaoyu islands.

About 150 personnel are due to be deployed on Yonaguni within two years.

During a ceremony to mark the start of project, Japanese Defence Minister Itsunori Onodera suggested his countrys military presence could be extended to other islands in the region.

This is the first deployment since the US returned Okinawa [in 1972] and calls for us to be more on guard are growing, Mr Onodera told reporters.

I want to build an operation able to properly defend islands that are part of Japans territory.

Tensions between Japan and China rose last year, after Beijing imposed an Air Defence Identification Zone above disputed islands in the East China Sea including the Senkakus.

The move was also condemned by the US.

Several countries claim competing sovereignty over islands, reefs and shoals in the South China Sea.
