Who put bounty on Rousey?

Updated APR 21, 2014 2:15p ET

An MMA apparel company says it will give a cash reward to the first fighter to knock out Ronda Rousey.

The Americana MMA Twitter account announced Saturday that $5,000 will go to the woman who KOs the UFC women's champion after Rousey called fellow women's MMA star Cris Cyborg "an it" in an interview with Yahoo! this week.

Americana MMA owner Peter Giannoulis turned down an interview request from FOX Sports on Sunday. Giannoulis believes Rousey should be suspended or fined for her comments about Cyborg the same way, writing as much on both Twitter and Facebook. Giannoulis cited the UFC's handling of situations regarding derogatory remarks from male fighters Matt Mitrione and Matt Brown. Mitrione was fined and suspended and Brown issued an apology.

In the interview with Yahoo, Rousey went off on Cyborg and her past failed drug test. Cyborg currently fights under the Invicta FC banner, but is attempting to make Rousey's 135-pound weight class so she can enter the UFC and challenge her.

"I've said before, I don't care if she's injecting horse semen into her eyeballs, I'll fight her, but that's just my personal decision," Rousey said. "But I can't make a decision for the whole division. I can't say it's the right thing. This girl has been on steroids for so long and [has been] injecting herself for so long that she's not even a woman anymore. She's an 'it.' It's not good for the women's division. It's not good at all."

Rousey's next opponent is Alexis Davis at UFC 175 on July 5 in Las Vegas. Giannoulis tweeted Davis on Saturday, reiterating that Americana would give her $5,000 if she beat Rousey via knockout.

Americana MMA, based out of Toronto, sponsors women's fighters Miriam Nakamoto and Zoila Frausto of Invicta. The company has also produced a shirt for UFC women's strawweight fighter Tecia Torres.

Mitrione called transgender women's fighter Fallon Fox a "sick, sociopathic, disgusting freak" in an interview with MMA Fighting last year. And Brown said on his podcast in January that if two women are fighting on pay-per-view, they should be doing it topless. The UFC did not penalize him, but Brown did issue an apology.

Morning Report: Ronda Rousey slams Cris Cyborg, 'she's not even a woman anymore. She's an 'it.'

Booked to face Alexis Davis Jul. 5 at UFC 175, women's bantamweight champion Ronda Rousey can't avoid talk of her nemesis, Cris Cyborg. The cold war between the two has heated up in past months, but the resolve to keep Cyborg on the outs seems stronger than ever. While UFC president Dana White reaffirmed his concerns over Cyborg making the 135 pound weight limit, Rousey is more worried about the life of her division.

"I've said before, I don't care if she's injecting horse semen into her eyeballs, I'll fight her, but that's just my personal decision," Rousey told Yahoo! Sports' Kevin Iole. "But I can't make a decision for the whole division. I can't say it's the right thing. This girl has been on steroids for so long and [has been] injecting herself for so long that she's not even a woman anymore. She's an 'it.' It's not good for the women's division. It's not good at all.

"If she comes in the UFC and I beat the [expletive] out of her and then I retire and become an action movie star, then the UFC is still going to be stuck with her. The division could die. She could ruin the whole sport. Even though it's a fight a lot of people want to see, even if I beat the living crap out of her, it won't be good for the sport because then she'd still be in the UFC."

Following a 16 second TKO destruction of Hiroko Yamanaka in December 2011, Cyborg tested positive for the anabolic steroid stanozolol. With her final Strikeforce bout ruled a no contest, Cyborg was fined $2,500 and suspended one year by the California State Athletic Commission. In January 2012 White stripped Cyborg of the Strikeforce 145 pound women's title, 'killing the division,' as he put it.

"I'd be honored to fight a competitor like Gina, who is an example of what real respect and honor is in the cage," Rousey said. "I really think with Cyborg taking all of those steroids and hormones and then going into the cage, it's like going in with a weapon. It's certainly very negligent, but it's also criminal. I believe, it really is. Promoting her would be promoting that act and I think it would be wrong in every way.

"I think it should be like the Olympics. If you [expletive] up once, you're not going to the [expletive] Olympics. There should be a zero tolerance policy where if you're caught doing anything, you should be done [expletive] forever."

New artificial intelligence facial recognition system could be 'privacy apocalypse'

Imagine having a pair of Google glasses at a party, turning over to look at an attractive woman, and because of facial recognition technology be able to get to know her on Facebook and ask her on a date on Tinder.

An artificial intelligence system known as "DeepFace" could make that possible in the near future. The controversial facial-recognition software is a marketing companies' dream come true and a nightmare for privacy advocates.

Facebook -- which already uses a less effective facial recognition system to allow users to tag photographs -- has researchers looking into the system. While law enforcement is already experimenting with the system and expanding databases to increase its effectiveness.

Facebook spokeswoman Lydia Chan told Local 10 News contributor CNN Money that the technology was considered "theoretical research" and the company is not using it yet.

The technology has been advancing since the 1960s. The FBI recognizes the technology is not reliable, but it's getting closer. "DeepFace" creates three-dimensional models of the faces and uses "Deep Learning" -- a system that mimics the structure of neurons in the brain.

While studies show humans can identify facial differences about 97.53 percent of the time, "DeepFace" promises to do so at 97.25 percent. The system uses more than 120 million different parameters to analyze large data sets and draw connections.

The FBI is reportedly working on a database of millions of photographs and fingerprints called Next Generation Identification. The technology could be linked to driver's license databases and other data to be classified by an FBI Universal Control Number.

The future of "identification services is rapidly advancing beyond existing capabilities," said the FBI's 2008 "Privacy Impact Assessment" adding that the technology should be used as "an investigative aid and not as a means of positive identification."

Nonetheless, the privacy concerns are such that the American Civil Liberties Union has referred to facial-recognition technology as "The Privacy Apocalypse" The Federal Trade Commission issuedrecommendations that asked commerce to keep consumer privacy in mind. But the ACLU policy makers do not think that's enough.

The potential "socio-political dangers of the technology," and possibilities of the power of the technology are something scholars from New York University to the University of California have been looking into.

PH, French push aerospace supply chain

The Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) is working with the French aerospace industry to improve the domestic industrys capabilities as a supplier in the global aerospace supply chain.

DTI Secretary Gregory L. Domingo said his agency is working with GIFAS (Groupement des industries franaises aronautiques et spatiales) to push domestic industries beyond promoting and marketing design driven products and organic food products.

Domingo said this in a keynote speech he delivered a month ago before the visiting French delegation organized by the Mouvement des entreprises de France (MEDEF), or the Movement of the Enterprises of France.

Domingo added that the Philippines is well credentialed as leading companies like SDV, Lufthansa Technik, MOOG Technologies, and BE Aerospace have already given the country a foothold in the global aerospace supply chain.

We strongly encourage French investment, technology, and training in this sector, particularly in the field of aircraft maintenance, repair and overhaul, and logistics areas where we believe we have the potential to further create and develop a competitive advantage, Domingo said.

The visit reciprocates that of Domingos, together with his Trade and Investment Promotion Group, and Department of Finance (DOF) Secretary Cesar V. Purisima, last September in France, where they had a chance to discuss with MEDEF on the Philippine growth story and its various business opportunities.

Domingo also noted that DTI and its investment promotion agencies welcome French investments in all sectors of the Philippine economy, particularly in the sectors specified in our 2013 Investment Priorities Plan.

I am especially heartened to note that based on the composition of the MEDEF mission, there appears to be a strong French interest in energy and infrastructure investments. These areas are critical to our quest for continued economic growth and development and your interest in them is indeed very welcome, Domingo said.

Domingo further said that the Philippines looks to France as a strategic European market that can showcase its best products to the world.

After an extended leave, the Department of Trade and Industry re-established the Philippine country brand in the global marketplace for design driven products at the Maison et Objet in Villepinte last September, Domingo said.

Comets take last finals seat

Monday, April 21, 2014

The Comets punched the last ticket to the finals of the Junior League division of the 2014 Saipan Little League Baseball, following a 9-5 win in a playoff game against the Falcons last Saturday at the Francisco Tan Ko Palacios Ballfield.

The Comets finished strong, scoring all their runs in the last three innings to pull off the come-from-behind victory over the Falcons and set up a finals showdown with pennant champions JPO Enforcers this Saturday. The Enforcers marched into the finals first after also beating the Falcons, 2-1, in a battle of the Top 2 finishers in the regular season.

The Falcons seemed to have a chance for a second crack at the Enforcers when they shut down the Comets in the first six innings and worked out a 4-0 lead, but the latter went for the push in the final three innings with starting pitcher Lorenzo Sebaklim and leftfielder Jeremy Demapan makinh crucial base hits in the seventh and ninth inning.

Sebaklim started the Comets recovery when he blasted a two-run single at the top of the seventh inning. Before Sebaklims base hit, the Comets were just one out away from another run-less inning, as their first batter was struck out in the fourth flied out to right field with runners on second and third. Sebaklim also reached home off an Aurel Mendiola triple, while the Comets got two more unearned runs to grab the driver seat, 5-4.

The Falcons then forced a standoff at the bottom of the seventh off an Austin Deleon Guerrero RBI single and the match remained tie as neither team managed to score in the eighth inning.

At the top of the ninth, Demapan connected on a big three-run single to put the Comets on top anew and Elijah Villar made it a 9-5 advantage when he reached off a base on ball.

The Comets went on to keep the upper hand and complete the come-from-behind win after forcing the Falcons to a 1-2-3 play in the last inning. The first two Falcons batters at the top of the ninth returned to the dugout off 5-3 and 6-3 putout plays, while the third one flied out at left field.

The Falcons scored in the second and third inning for early control of the rubber match before collapsing in the closing phase of the game. Jay Kalen had an RBI single at the bottom of the second, while Kekuni Kainoa nailed a two-run single in the fourth and the Falcons got another run in that inning off a Comets error at first base.

Seeking God: an ancient connection in a new context

By Sara Israelsen-Hartley, Deseret News National Modified: April 19, 2014 at 11:41 am Published: April 19, 2014

Hunched over her dining room table in a dark apartment, Danielle Walker sobbed into her hands.

For a while, the drinking and late-night partying had felt liberating. As a 20-year-old who left behind her parents' house and the rules of her Baptist upbringing, Walker was euphoric as she explored the real world.

But after five months, her first real relationship ended, her self-esteem crumbled and she realized she was drinking for medication, not recreation. Counseling didn't help and she'd often spend days on her couch, lost in a spiral of negative thoughts.

Reflecting on this that March night, she slipped from the chair to her knees.

" 'You know what, God, she cried. You have to do something. You have to save me.' And that's when everything started to change in my life."

Over the next year, Walker who left church, fed up with its rules and less-than-friendly peers embarked on a relationship with God stronger and more life-changing than anything she had experienced as a child.

"I would never have thought that by turning my life around I'd have such a positive outlook on life and feel so motivated," the 23-year-old said. "Now that I do have a relationship with God, I see how good it is."

For several years, the United States has seen a decline in religious affiliation. Currently, 20 percent of Americans don't claim a particular religion or church up from 15 percent just five years ago. Some worry that this shift into secularism will turn the United States into Western Europe.

Yet others are more optimistic. They point out that polling data don't always allow for a nuanced discussion of faith and spirituality, and that many individuals still want to have a relationship with God, albeit on their own terms and with their own timing.
