Orbsen Therapeutics, a spin-out from NUI Galway's Regenerative Medicine Institute (REMEDI), is to partner with the University of Birmingham in a E6 million EU FP7 funded MERLIN project to fight liver disease.

The EU FP7-funded project known by the acronym "MERLIN" (MEsynchymal stem cells to Reduce Liver INflammation) is led by Professor Phil Newsome, Clinical Director of the Birmingham University Stem Cell Centre. MERLIN will advance Orbsen's proprietary cell therapy to a Phase 2a clinical trial in patients with inflammatory liver disease. This MERLIN project will evaluate the Orbsen cell therapy in 4 different research laboratories across Europe and the project will culminate in a Phase 2a clinical trial of the therapy in the crippling inflammatory liver disease, Primary Sclerosing Cholangitis.

This is Orbsen's fourth success in attracting FP7 funding (the EU's Seventh Framework Programme for Research), making them one of Ireland's most successful private companies in this funding programme and now connects Orbsen to 23 global collaborators. Other successful cell therapy projects for Orbsen include PURSTEM (completed), REDDSTAR (ongoing) and DeCIDE (ongoing).

Orbsen Therapeutics Ltd. is a privately-held company founded in 2006 as a spin-out from Ireland's Regenerative Medicine Institute (REMEDI) in NUI Galway. As part of the PurStem EU FP7 program, Orbsen developed proprietary technologies that enable the prospective purification of highly defined and therapeutic (stromal) cells from several human tissues, including bone marrow, adipose tissue and umbilical cord.

Orbsen's CEO Brian Molloy said, "Orbsen has secured substantial amounts of research funding in the last 18 months which will further validate our product and bring us through to a "first in man" clinical trial in 2015/16. Our model has always focused on putting the 'science first' and we have successfully used that approach to develop a technology that could potentially position us and indeed Ireland at the leading edge of European Cell Therapy development."

Mr Molloy continued, "As a spin-out from the NUI Galway based REMEDI Institute we have focused the majority of our collaborations with an Irish research team. Our success in the MERLIN project now demonstrates that we are capable of playing a key role in collaborations led by researchers across Europe."

The total research budget for the MERLIN project is close to E6 Million of which E1 Million will go directly to Orbsen Therapeutics over the 4-year period of the project.

Vermont Will Be The First State To Require Mandatory GMO Labeling

By Laurel Maloy, contributing author, Food Online

Vermont House Bill H. 0112, legislature relating to the labeling of food produced with genetic engineering, is close to becoming law

Consumers across the nation, as well as 50 bill sponsors, are awaiting final passage of House Bill H. 0112. The bill passed the Vermont House last year, but has been waiting for the Vermont Senate to make changes. The bill is now on its way back to the House and, if approved, will head to the governors desk. Governor Peter Shumlin has indicated that he will most likely sign it. If all goes according to plan, the new law will take effect on Jul 1, 2016.

Vermont House Bill H. 0112:

Ronnie Cummins, National Director of the Organic Consumers Association said, Todays victory has been 20 years in the making! He elaborated by reminding everyone that since the early 1990s, when GMOs were first introduced, U.S. consumers have fought for GMO labeling.

Unlike neighbors Maine and Connecticuts bills, Vermonts has no contingency clause. Vermonts bill will not be contingent upon its neighbors passing similar legislation. However, this victory may be short lived. U.S. Rep. Mike Pompeo (R-KS) introduced a bill in the U.S. House of Representatives last week. If passed, the Safe and Accurate Food Labeling Act would not only prohibit mandatory GMO labeling, but would also forbid states from drafting their own statutes.

In recent years, several states have attempted to pass GMO labeling legislation but failed due to the interference of large, well-funded industry groups. In California and Washington State, the Coalition for Safe and Affordable Food reportedly spent some $60 million fighting GMO labeling initiatives. Its membership roster reads like the Whos Who of U.S. and global food processing. Its members include such industry power hitters as: Biotechnology Industry Organization, the American Soybean Association, the National Council of Farmer Cooperatives, and the National Grain & Feed Association. All of its 35 listed members have an economic interest in defeating GMO labeling initiatives and have the money and influence to keep it from happening.

The question consumers must be asking themselves is, why? If GMOs are truly safe, why are these groups so determined to defeat legislation that simply identifies those products containing GMOs? Recently, some large-scale retailers have demonstrated their support for the consumer, and are encouraging others to follow suit. It seems that even the industry big-wigs cannot come to a consensus on the safety of genetically-modified food products.

Workington Comets gain revenge over Berwick Bandits

By John Walsh

Last updated at 09:28, Tuesday, 22 April 2014

Workington Comets 51 Berwick Bandits 38: After three successive defeats Workington Comets got their season back on track with a hard-earned victory over Berwick Bandits last night.

Workington Comets Ashley Morris, left, leads Berwicks Steen Jensen

On Saturday they squandered a six point lead, with three heats left, to go down 46-44 after a heat maximum by Berwick at Shielfield.

For a while, in the return at Derwent Park, it looked as though the Bandits were capable of completing the League Cup double as the Comets did not get their noses in front until heat eight.

Consistently gating better than their hosts in the opening exchanges the Bandits had two heat maximums in the first five races.

The only heat advantage was a slender 3-2 in the re-run of heat four after home skipper Rene Bach had been disqualified following a fall.

In a gripping re-run Claus Vissing was disqualified after referee Craig Ackroyd had to stop the race. The Dane had gone wide round the last bend, forcing Ashley Morris to take frantic evasive action which ended with him riding onto the rugby pitch, round behind the goal posts and back onto the track after turn two.

Morris was clearly annoyed by Vissiongs manouvre and had to be restrained from attempting to exact his own retribution. Vissing paid the price and was disqualified with Morris given the race from the only other finisher Steen Jensen.

Comets flash past Plainsmen

ENID, Okla. Tanner Lingenfelter gave his grandfather Butch an Enid assistant coach and grandmother Ruth Ann Lingenfelter a pretty nice 43rd anniversary present Monday in Enids District 6A-3 game against Tulsa Kelley at David Allen Memorial Ballpark.

Lingenfelter was 3-for-3 with two bunt singles, drove in a run and scored a run in front of his grandparents, who were presented flowers before the game.

However, it wasnt enough for the Plainsmen (3-8, 9-17), who dropped a 6-2 decision to the Comets (7-4, 14-8).

It was cool seeing them getting the flowers before the game, I was pumped, Lingenfelter said. It was a close game today. We plan on getting them in a couple of weeks.

Todays scheduled game between the two teams in Tulsa has been moved back to May 3.

Lingenfelter also was involved in one of the key moments of the game.

The Plainsmen, down 6-0, appeared to be ready to threaten in the fourth.

Christian Voitik reached on an error and scored after singles by Braden Rogers and Lingenfelter. Voitik came home from third when center fielder Ryan Martin bobbled Lingenfelters hit.

Tanner Fore flew deep to right. Kros Bay followed with a sharply hit ball that unfortunately for the Plainsmen, struck Lingenfelter for the third out, ending the rally.

You dont know what would have happened if the ball hadnt hit Tanner, said Enid head coach Bill Mayberry. If the ball wasnt hit awfully hard, that doesnt happen. That happens sometimes in baseball.

Merck among NASA Cargo Launching to Space Station

When the SpaceX-3 cargo resupply mission launched to the International Space StationApril 14, an experiment designed by Merck Research Laboratories ofKenilworth, N.J., was among the cargo headed to space.

The experiment, located inside the SpaceX Dragon spacecraft, arrived at the orbiting outpost yesterday morning at10:06 a.m. EDT.

The experiment, Microgravity Growth of Antibody Crystals in the Hand Held High Density Protein Crystal Growth Hardware (HDPCG), focuses on the crystallization of a human monoclonal antibody, a specialized type of protein made by immune cells that can bind to target cells or other proteins to perform a specific task. The monoclonal antibody in this investigation is under investigation for the treatment of human diseases, and crystallizing it may help the pharmaceutical industry determine its physical structure, which could lead to new drugs.

SpaceX developed its Dragon capsule, the only cargo spacecraft currently servicing the space station with the capability to return cargo back to Earth, with NASA and now successfully has completed three missions to the orbiting outpost. Expedition 39 crew members captured the SpaceX-3 Dragon using the station's robotic arm at7 a.m. Wednesday, April 16. The capsule is scheduled to remain attached to the station unitMay 18. It then will return to Earth and splash down in the Pacific Ocean, off the coastCalifornia. It will return samples from scientific investigations currently underway aboard the space station.

The International Space Station is a convergence of science, technology and human innovation that demonstrates new technologies and makes research breakthroughs not possible on Earth. The space station has had continuous human occupation sinceNovember 2000. In that time it has been visited by more than 200 people and a variety of international and commercial spacecraft. The space station remains the springboard to NASA's next great leap in exploration, including future missions to an asteroid and Mars.

Ced Kurtz's TechMan Texts: SpaceX ushers in new age of space flight

Welcome to the dawn of commercial space flight.

Elon Musks SpaceX has just posted video of a successful launch of its re-usable rocket concept, according to SlashGear. The shuttle is shown taking off, rising to 250 meters, then landing right next to the launch pad. In a second test, SpaceX said the first stage of a rocket that docked with the International Space Station over the weekend successfully test-fired its boosters in a way that will allow it to land in the ocean. Reusable rockets would go a long way to making space flight a business.

Power over distance. According to a news release, a Korean team has made an advance in wireless power transfer. Chun T. Rim, a professor of nuclear and quantum engineering at theKorea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology, and his team last week demonstrated a great improvement in the distance that electric power can travel wirelessly, up to five meters. In 2007, scientistsused a magnetic field to transfer energy for a distance of 2.1 meters. What a boon wireless electric power would be.

Cord-cutters grow.A new report from Experian Marketing Services says more people are droppingcable or satellite and instead watching video online. The number of cord-cutters, which Experian considers people with high-speed Internet whove either never subscribed to or stopped subscribing to cable or satellite, has risen from 5.1 million homes to 7.6 million homes, or 44 percent, in three years.

Wearing computers wears out. The tech pundits have been saying that wearable computers are the next big thing. But Nike begs to differ. Cnet.com reported that Nike is getting ready to jettison its wearable-hardware products, including the FuelBand fitness tracker and the Nike+ SportWatch. The company informed members of the 70-person hardware team part of its larger, technology-focused Digital Sport division comprised of about 200 people of the job cuts last week, Cnet reports.

Floating for free. Japanese rail operator JR Tokai said it would not charge the U.S. to license its proprietary maglev technology, which allows trains to hover about 4 inches above tracks and travel at speeds of 310 mph, according to Nikkei. It is hoping the U.S. will use its train for a proposed high-speed rail line between Washington D.C. and Baltimore.

Space station astronauts get a 'Dragon' for Easter (+video)

After a two day trip, a SpaceX cargo mission carrying resupply items includinga robotic astronaut's legs, microbes gathered by cheerleaders, and lettuce seedlings arrived at the International Space Station on Sunday.

On Sunday, the crew aboard the International Space Station received a unique Easter gift: a cargo ship carrying about 2.5 tons of resupply items, includinga pair of robotic legs, microbes gathered by cheerleaders, and lettuce seedlings. The supplies will support more than 150 scientific investigations planned for Expeditions 39 and 40.

The SpaceX cargo ship, dubbed 'Dragon' is expected to spend four weeks attached to ISS, after which it is scheduled to return back to Earth with 1.8 tons of experiment samples and hardware.

A Falcon 9 rocket carrying the Dragon capsule lifted off Friday from Cape Canaveral Air Force Station in Florida. After a two-day trip, Dragon was finally wrangled using a 57-foot robotic arm, at 7:14 a.m. as it flew within about 32 feet of the orbiting complex. "At the time of capture, the orbital laboratory was flying around260 statute miles over Egypt, west of the Nile River," NASA said in a statement.

According to the Associated Press, as the capsule was secured into place, NASA's Mission Control said, "Gentlemen, the Easter Dragon is knocking at the door."

Commander Koichi Wakata from the ISS tweeted, "Congratulations to the entire ops team for the successful launch, rendezvous and capture operation. The vehicle, the spacecraft was very solid and very stable. And the Canadarm2 was really solid, and it made it easier for us to capture."

The recent SpaceX-3 mission was delayed due to a helium leak on the Falcon 9's first stage.

Prior to that "despite the loss Friday of a backup computer command relay box called a multiplexer/demultiplexer (MDM) that resides in the stations S0 truss," NASA had decided to go ahead with the launch of what will be SpaceX's third commercial cargo re-supply mission to the ISS. In the next few days, two of the crewmembers aboard the space station will replace the faulty MDM with a spare one from inside the station.
