Liberty County, FL - The Liberty County Sheriff says the man shot and killed is 29-year-old Roy Brian Stewart.

The sheriff says the suspect was still on scene when deputies arrived at about 4:30 Wednesday afternoon. He says the suspect is being questioned but has not been charged or arrested.

An autopsy is set for today.

Liberty County, FL - The Liberty County Sheriffs Office is investigating a deadly shooting.

CAPT Smith says it happened last night at a home on Randy's Way. He says LCSO has not yet released the victim's name and says the motive for the shooting is still under investigation.

No one has been arrested.

We'll have more information as it becomes available.

MICHIGAN CITY | More than 700 signatures have been gathered on an online petition that demands Michigan City give back a bullet- and bomb-proof military vehicle supplied to the police department at no cost by the U.S. military.

Ray Wolff, of LaPorte, started the petition drive believing that the Mine Resistant Ambush Protected Vehicle represents too much of a military presence in grassroots law enforcement.

"The concerns run the gamut but one of the those big reasons is kind of a concern that people have about the militarization of the police," said Wolff, who is chairman of the Libertarian Party in LaPorte County.

Michigan City police recently obtained its MRAP worth $800,000 at no cost under the federal military surplus vehicle giveaway program.

Police have cited the potential for occasional uses like safely transporting more than a dozen officers at once to situations involving gunfire and driving up to a doorway to provide a better chance for hostages to safely flee in a vehicle that's bulletproof.

Royce Williams, Michigan City police chief of services, dismissed claims the vehicle represents a step toward a police state or some type of military takeover of residents.

"All military weapons and ammo were taken off of it. It's just a vehicle of transportation for safety. That's all," said Williams. "It's no marshal law. There's no military state.

"We're a police organization and we'll continue the job we've been doing. It'll be no different with the MRAP or without the MRAP."

Since the 1980s, Wolff said the use of SWAT teams and other heavily armed specialized groups of officers have gone up dramatically even in situations that don't warrant such aggression.

He said the major reason is the war on drugs, which he feels would be better fought if treated more as a "public health issue" and less of a criminal matter.

Libertarian Hero Cliven Bundy Shockingly Turns Out to Be Gigantic Racist

According to J.D. Tuccille of the libertarian magazine Reason, the Cliven Bundy standoff is about something larger and grander than mere grazing rights. It is about freedom-loving individuals fighting back against distant, bureaucratic government. They see little reason, he writes, to leave their fate in the hands of a stumbling federal government that can't balance its books.

Now Cliven Bundy, the deadbeat rancher embraced by Rand Paul and other freedom lovers, has added some thoughts of his own. In an interview with the New York Times, Bundy introducing the topic with the brace-yourself-for-awkwardness segue I want to tell you one more thing I know about the Negro expounds:

They abort their young children, they put their young men in jail, because they never learned how to pick cotton. And Ive often wondered, are they better off as slaves, picking cotton and having a family life and doing things, or are they better off under government subsidy? They didnt get no more freedom. They got less freedom.

So apparently theres more to Bundys cause than the existence of the federal budget deficit. Or, at least, his views on land rights and individual freedom come attached to a large side order of racism.

As it happens, just the other day, Tuccille expressed outrage over something I wrote. In a longer argument about the future of American politics, I suggested that conservatism in its current incarnation has no future in American politics because Americas unique brand of ideological anti-statism is historically inseparable from the legacy of slavery, and thus will have little natural appeal to an increasingly diverse electorate. Tuccille shot back, It's tempting to say 'what the fuck?' and take Chait's argument as an exercise in self-congratulatory lunacy.

To his credit, Tuccille then went back and read my magazine story about racial politics in the Obama era, which tries to untangle the fraught relationship between racism and ideology. To his discredit, Tuccille summarized my point as follows: No need for debate, it's all about internalized racism. This is the precise opposite of my argument, which held that while conservatism and racism may be historically, sociologically, and psychologically inseparable, it is absolutely necessary to debate conservative ideas on their own terms. (Self-quote: And yet as vital as this revelation may be for understanding conservatism, it still should not be used to dismiss the beliefs of individual conservatives. Individual arguments need and deserve to be assessed on their own terms, not as the visible tip of a submerged agenda; ideas cant be defined solely by their past associations and uses. Seriously, somebody tell me how I could have made this point more explicitly.)

Most of the outrage against my argument came from the left, who objected to the you need to argue with conservative ideas on their own terms part, but Tuccille helped stoke some belated outrage on the right at the yes, American conservatism is deeply intertwined with racism part. In that spirit, I would absolutely concede that, while I find Bundys case completely unsympathetic, it is 100 percent possible to agree with his views on grazing rights without being racist.

Where we differ is that, Id argue, its not exactly a coincidence that Bundy also turns out to be a gigantic racist. Just like Ron Pauls longtime ghostwriter turned out to be a neoconfederate white supremacist. And like the way Rand Pauls ghostwriter also turned out to be a neoconfederate white supremacist. Presumably all these revelations have struck Tuccille as a series of shocking coincidences. Why do all these people with strong antipathy toward the federal government turn out to be racists? Why do all these homosexuals keep sucking my cock?

Libertarian Lucas Overby will not seek District 13 seat in the fall

Lucas Overby, a Libertarian who won nearly 5-percent of the vote in last month's special congressional election in Pinellas County, said he has decided not to run for the seat in the regularly scheduled election this fall.

Republican David Jolly won last month's election with 48.4 percent of the vote, defeating Democrat Alex Sink, who received 46.5 percent. The special election was held in Congressional District 13 after the death of longtime Republican U.S. Rep. C.W. Bill Young.

In a prepared statement, Overby thanked his supporters and his family, and said, "This is far from my last fight and this is not the last time my name will appear on a ballot."

Obama Says U.S. Will Defend Japan-Administered Islands

President Barack Obama warned China the U.S. would protect East China Sea islands administered by Japan and urged the two countries to peacefully resolve a territorial dispute that has raised tensions across Asia.

Obama, speaking today after a meeting in Tokyo with Prime Minister Shinzo Abe, said that a security treaty between the U.S. and Japan covers all territory that is administered by Japan. The commitment to defend the area is longstanding and he was not drawing a new red line with China over the issue, Obama said.

Chinas assertiveness in its territorial claims is adding pressure on Obama to demonstrate a commitment to defend allies in Asia at a time when Russias push into Ukraine has raised questions about U.S. resolve. No country should feel emboldened by actions such as Russias annexation last month of Crimea, Obama said.

The alternative is a situation in which large countries like the United States or China, or Russia, or other countries feel as if whenever they think its expedient, they can take actions that disadvantage smaller countries, Obama told reporters at a joint briefing with Abe.

Obama met Abe on the first day of a four-nation Asian swing that will also take him to South Korea, Malaysia and the Philippines. Talks will focus on promoting pending free-trade agreements and addressing regional security matters such as North Koreas nuclear weapons program and Chinas efforts to assert its claims to much of the East and South China seas.

Standing next to Abe, Obama reiterated that the U.S. views Japan as the sole administrator of the disputed islands, which the president referred to by their Japanese name, Senkaku. China has challenged Japans control of the uninhabited islands, called Diaoyu in Chinese, through the positioning of ships and flying of surveillance aircraft.

It is significant that Obama has become the first president to say categorically that the U.S.-Japan security treaty applies to all Japanese-held territories -- including the disputed islands, said Tina Burrett, assistant professor of politics at Sophia University in Tokyo. However, the fact that Obama had to say this highlights the lack of confidence in the alliance felt by some on the Japanese side.

China opposes the islands being included in the security agreement between Japan and the U.S., Foreign Ministry spokesman Qin Gang said in Beijing today.

No matter what others say or do, they cant change the fact that Diaoyu has been under Chinas sovereignty, and it wont shake the Chinese governments determination and will to protect its sovereignty and marine interests, Qin said.

In November, China declared an air defense identification zone over a large part of the East China Sea. Japan has ignored Chinas demands that it file flight plans before sending planes through the zone, while aircraft and ships from the two countries regularly tail each other around the islands. Japan on April 19 broke ground on a new radar base on its westernmost island to improve surveillance in the area.

Tokyo (CNN) -- The United States stands by its security agreement with Japan in its dispute with China over a group of islands, President Barack Obama said Thursday.

The securities agreement between Washington and Tokyo is decades old, he told reporters in the Japanese capital. And it would be honored in any conflict arising out of tensions over the islands that Japan calls Senkaku and China calls Diaoyu.

But the President, who spoke alongside Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe, would not say how the United States would get involved in any strife over the islands.

The group of islands and rocks jutting out of the ocean is tiny and uninhabited. But the long-standing dispute over them has sent tempers flaring in Beijing and Tokyo, especially in recent years.

The area around them in the South China Sea between Taiwan and Okinawa is believed to be rich in oil resources.

Senkaku is administered by the Japanese, but the Chinese claim they are the rightful owners.

The possibility of a war over the islands has been a thorn in the side of the United States, which says it is obligated by the common security agreement to back Japan.

HOUSTON (April 24, 2014) A team of international scientists led by Baylor College of Medicine has discovered a novel gene (CLP1) associated with a neurological disorder affecting both the peripheral and central nervous systems. Together with scientists in Vienna they show that disturbance of a very basic biological process, tRNA biogenesis, can result in cell death of neural progenitor cells. This leads to abnormal brain development and a small head circumference as well as dysfunction of peripheral nerves.

The study published today in the current issue of the journal Cell.

"This is the first human disorder associated with the gene CLP1," said Dr. Ender Karaca, post-doctoral associate in the department of molecular and human genetics at Baylor.

The gene find is significant because CLP1 has a role in RNA processing and has important implications for genomic approaches to Mendelian disease and for our understanding of human biology and brain development, Karaca said.

Karaca's work with families of this rare disorder began many years ago during his residency training as a clinical geneticist in Turkey.

A chance meeting with Dr. James R. Lupski, the Cullen Professor and Vice Chair of Molecular and Human Genetics and professor of pediatrics at Baylor, at a medical meeting in Istanbul, Turkey would lead to Karaca's recruitment as a trainee in Lupski's lab where the research took off and eventually the team unveiled new clues about the genetic malfunction that may be causing the disorder in these families.

Lupski leads the Center for Mendelian Genomics at Baylor, a joint program with the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine that is funded by the National Human Genome Research Institute. The Center is focused on advancing research of the cause of rare, single-gene diseases usually called Mendelian disorders.
