Rand Paul Wants Bigger GOP: You Go to a Republican Event and Its All White People

Rand Paul spoke at Harvards Kennedy Institute of Politics Friday, and he talked about his libertarian tendencies as well as his desire to broaden the GOP to welcome more people in. He described himself as libertarian-ish, in that despite his very clear libertarian political leanings, hes generally supported fellow Republicans and hasnt really backed Libertarian party candidates (save for his father during his 1988 presidential run).

Paul, according to CNN, also talked about making the Republican party bigger and much more inclusive, saying that unless Republicans broaden their message to reach more people, winning future elections is going to be a bit of a problem.

You go to a Republican event and its all white peoplenot because were excluding anybody, but because we just havent done a good enough job encouraging people to come into our party.

Rand Paul on being libertarian-ish

(CNN) Sen. Rand Paul hopes to infuse the Republican Party with some of his libertarian views, but the Kentucky Republican said Friday hed still support the GOP presidential nominee in 2016 even if he didnt entirely agree with that person.

I think a libertarian twist or a libertarian influence in the Republican Party is good, but Ive pretty much just stayed with the party and plan on doing so, he said at Harvards Institute of Politics.

Paul, whos seriously thinking about a White House bid, had been asked by a student whether he would support a libertarian candidate in the next presidential election if Paul doesnt become the nominee.

The first-term senator described himself as libertarian-ish, but said hes never endorsed libertarian candidates.

He was corrected by the student, who pointed out that Paul supported his father, ex-Rep. Ron Paul, when he ran for president as a libertarian in 1988.

Youre right. I did. I stand corrected, Paul said, laughing.

I did, and I hope I don't have to oppose him in anything, he joked. Somebody asked me the other day What if your dad runs? And I was like Im not going there, alright?

Making the GOP slightly more libertarian is just part of Pauls recent mission to broaden the Republican Party. The senator reiterated his message that it also needs to look different in terms of race and age.

You go to a Republican event and it's all white peoplenot because were excluding anybody, but because we just havent done a good enough job encouraging people to come into our party, he said at the event, which was hosted by his 2010 GOP primary rival, Trey Grayson. Hes now the institutes director.

But Paul said he felt assured that other Republicans are starting to realize a need to expand the party, and that his efforts arent in vain.

Quality, safety and patient outcomes drive health care innovation

The need to better manage costs while improving quality, safety and patient outcomes is driving the push for innovation in health care.

Americans spend more on health care per person than residents of many developed nations, yet patient outcomes and public health measures, such as average life span and infant mortality, are no better and often worse than countries that spend less.

We really see what is driving innovation is a quest for better value, said Beth A. Bortz, president and CEO of the Virginia Center for Health Innovation. The center is a public-private partnership formed to accelerate the adoption of value-driven models of wellness and health care.

Its not necessarily that we are spending the wrong amount, Bortz said. We might be spending the right amount, but we dont feel that we are getting the value.

The Virginia Center for Health Innovation has collected more than 350 examples of innovations in its online database, the Virginia Health Innovation Network.

In June, health care innovation will be the focus of a two-day conference in Richmond presented by the Virginia Center for Health Innovation, the Virginia Chamber of Commerce and other partners.

People can come and sort of do a one-stop shop, to see what are the (health) plans doing, what are the health systems doing, what are some of the technology companies doing, Bortz said.

Were bringing in a number of new venture capital groups that are investing in health care startups to talk about what do they see and why should we care, what are the most promising things that they are identifying.

Innovation in health care takes many forms: new treatments, new drugs, new technology, new process or ways of doing things. Here are two examples.

Computers are getting infinitesimally small. By the time we get to the year 2020, the size of the computational chip that drives our smartphones, our tech gadgets and our computers will approach zero, says Brian David Johnson, the resident futurist at Intel.

And as that happens, we will be able to put computer chips into our Band-Aids, allowing us to monitor the health of a sick child from a distance. The power of computation will surround us, becoming part of the walls, tunnels, and bridges of the cities we live in, Johnson told Entrepreneur.com at The Feast social innovation conference in New York City this past fall.

As our ability to control aspects of our lives through technology increases, so does our ability to do harm. That's the challenge. The greatest danger is not being present and not understanding that we imbue our technology with our sense of humanity, Johnson says. We have to be responsible.

Watch this video to hear more from Johnson on his views of the future as human beings continue to dance into the ever-after with their own technological manifestations.

Presented at the 1986 Paris Motor Show, the Proxima concept was the ultimate vision of '80s futurism, both in terms of its design and engineering. To assert its blue-sky vision, Peugeot named its creation after Proxima Centauri, the closest star to the sun.

The exterior design was directed by Grard Welter, and featured a long wheelbase, mid-mounted engine and very small overhangs, putting the accent on power and performance.

While the front looked like a 405 on steroids, the rear was a very dramatic piece of design. The body was made of stratified Kevlar, and included a rear dorsal fin that sat on top of the engine compartment, between two solar panels. These provided the power to regulate the temperature inside the cabin.

A thin horizontal LED strip stretched over the full width of the truncated tail to create a strong Peugeot signature. The body only covered some vital elements, leaving the fat rear tires and parts of its engine unprotected.

Looking below the car, you could see the two large turbos hanging from its exposed guts. These were coupled with two air-to-liquid intercoolers to bring the power of the 2.8-liter V6 to 600bhp. The engine also made use of ceramic-coated mechanical components to reduce power losses due to friction.

To get in, the passengers had to open the polycarbonate canopy, which is split in half. The front half rotated forward at its base while the rear half slid rearwards.

The bright red cockpit was designed by Paul Bracq, and capable of accommodating up to four passengers. It contrasted traditional handcrafted leather and quilting with high technology. Satellite navigation, an electronic key card, rear-view cameras, anti-collision radar and a visualization system that combined the input from five external cameras into a unique image of the vehicle's surroundings all featured.

The Proxima also included electronic assistance technologies that aimed to provide comfort, speed and safety. The transmission was a non permanent four-wheel drive, which transferred power to the front axle if a skid was detected, while the gearbox and clutch were electronically controlled. The future is now.
