Deteriorating press freedom due to various factors: Ahmad Shabery

KUALA LUMPUR, April 29 (Bernama) -- Malaysia's fall of 23 rungs in the 2013 World Press Freedom Index should not be attributed solely to government actions, said Communications and Multimedia Minister Datuk Seri Ahmad Shabery Cheek

He said the actions of some opposition parties in blocking certain media from covering their events also affected the position of the country in the media freedom index.

"Therefore, it is not fair to blame the government as the only cause for the fall in ranking as other factors also contributed to the state of press freedom in the country," he added.

He was winding up the debate on the motion of thanks for the royal address at the Dewan Negara sitting, here, today.

The World Press Freedom Index issued by Reporters Without Borders, a non-profit organisation registered in France, showed that Malaysia fell to 145th position out of 179 countries last year compared to 122nd in 2012.

Ahmad Shabery said although media freedom in the country declined to 145th place, the government was open-minded, among which was doing away with the annual press permit renewal except for media which violated the law.

"The question is why the fall? I was told the public's perception is that the government is the enemy of media freedom. It is incorrect. The Philippines and Indonesia are also not in the best positions. Thailand is more or less the same with us," he said.

Ahmad Shabery said interference by certain influential individuals could also contribute to the fall, for example, the act of an influential person in calling the news editor directly to determine a certain news also constituted press interference.

This could cause the fall in ranking of the country in press freedom, headed.

Ahmad Shabery said the government also encouraged the freedom to speak out by inviting parties from different political ideologies as panellists in discussion programmes produced by Radio Televisyen Malaysia (RTM).

Dr M: Restrict freedom of speech and a free press to safeguard democracy

The former prime minister argued today in a posting on his popular blog that the public must accept limits to their freedom, amid a series of challenges in recent years to the policies of the Barisan Nasional (BN) government's policies and conduct.

If democracy is to survive and to serve the purpose for which it is devised, there must be some acceptance of the limits to the freedom that we consider democratic.

The world needs to make up its mind. Do we elect government by voting or do we install government through street demonstrations? Dr Mahathir said.

Race and religious tension has been on the rise in recent years with challenges to government policy which has been seen as marginalising non-Malays and non-Muslims.

There have also been widespread concerns about electoral fraud and unfair polls practises resulting in massive street demonstrations by electoral reform group Bersih.

The ruling BN lost its customary two-thirds parliamentary majority in Election 2008 and that was repeated in last year's elections. In Election 2013 the BN coalition also lost the popular vote.

Dr Mahathir, who was known for his authoritarian administration, has been arguing in recent times for strong government.

In his latest blog post today, he said free speech, free press, demonstrations and strikes must be circumscribed to some degree so that they will not destroy democracies in the name of democracy.

In a non-democratic totalitarian state such massive demonstrations may be justified as there is no other way to change governments. But now even when elections can determine changes in governments, the losers in democratic elections have resorted to these disruptive acts.

Dr Mahathir claimed the series of Bersih demonstrations were obviously meant to excite public support to discredit the government and eventually to bring it down.

Freedom High teacher on the move

OAKLEY -- It's been a banner-busting year for Jennifer Kadavy.

The 31-year-old Concord resident, a cross country and track coach and English teacher at Freedom High School in Oakley, got married, got buff and got a spot in the 2016 U.S. Olympic team marathon trials.

Traveling the 26.2 miles between Calistoga and Napa on March 2, Kadavy was a blur. She placed first in the Napa Valley Marathon at 2:40:47, after having blue-ribboned February's Kaiser Permanente San Francisco Half Marathon with a 1:16 finish. A few days after cranking herself up the 250-foot Golden Gate Bridge incline, in the 31st annual Across the Bay 12K (she came in second), Kadavy sat down for an interview.

"I'd like to run Big Sur, just for fun," she says. "I'm running the California International Marathon from Folsom to Sacramento in December. I want to find another fast course before then."

Her focus, narrow and deep, is showing up in her numbers. Shaving precious seconds off her times, she managed to dip under the Olympic Trial "B" standard of 2:43. Now, she's aiming for "A," a goal that would mean clipping three minutes. "I have four marathons where I can try to do it," she says.

Growing up in Fremont, her father signed her up for road races at the age of 4.

"He's a runner too, and he taught me to pace myself. All the other girls were sprinting, then walking. I'd run right on by," she recalls.

During her freshman year at San Jose's Notre Dame High School, coach Matt Andrade led her through tough, repeat workouts. Pushing past her limits made her realize she didn't have limits, and running hard -- and long -- became a rewarding experience.

"I never regret going for a run," she says. "I feel lighter, emotionally and physically. I'm more clearheaded and positive, even when my pace isn't what I wanted it to be."

At UC Davis, Kadavy encountered a series of speed bumps -- injuries she says resulted from a lack of planning and trying to keep up with the team's top seven runners.

PUP's Jacqui Lambie compares parental leave scheme to eugenics

April 30, 2014, 4:09 p.m.

Tasmanian senator-elect Jacqui Lambie has compared the Coalition's paid parental leave scheme to eugenics - the discredited social policy associated with Adolf Hitler's Nazi-era attempts to breed a race of ubermenschen, or super humans.

Tasmanian senator-elect Jacqui Lambie has compared the Coalition's paid parental leave scheme to eugenics - the discredited social policy associated with Adolf Hitler's Nazi-era attempts to breed a race of ubermenschen, or super humans.

As Prime Minister Tony Abbott announced he would scale back his ambitious paid parental leave scheme from an upper limit of $150,000 to $100,000, blaming the budget emergency created by the former Labor government, Ms Lambie accused the government's generous scheme of attempting to discourage poor people from having children.

Eugenics emerged in the 19th century as a "scientific" theory designed to control which people became parents and thereby limit which genes were passed on. It was adopted by the Nazis and used to justify the forced sterilisation of an estimated 400,000 people, according to the United States Holocaust Memorial museum, and the deaths of tens of thousands of people.

"Its clear that the Liberals paid parental leave scheme is a not-so-subtle attempt at discouraging Australians with the undesirable trait of being poor (when compared with those who are rich) from reproducing. Why else would Mr Abbott and his supporters champion a government scheme which ensures rich Australians receive more than double, sometimes triple the amount of parental leave that poor working Australians receive?" she said in a statement.

"The only fair way to administer any government-sanctioned paid parental leave scheme is as per the Palmer United policy - and ensure that all Australian parents and babies are treated equally. Otherwise those championing a government scheme which clearly tries to influence or control who becomes parents must be associated with eugenics- and all the historic, moral and political baggage attached to this reviled social theory."

"If the Liberals really want to improve Australian society then they should allow our children to access free university degrees and visits to their GPs, not introduce a sly social policy which divides us into rich and poor - and attempts to influence which group reproduces the most."

Ms Lambie, a former soldier, has courted controversy since being elected to the Senate last September.

She has been engaged in a public stoush with her Palmer United Party colleague, Queensland MP Alex Douglas, who suggested she came from "Boganland". Ms Lambie hit back at that criticism, telling her local paper she was from the "underdog world".

Tatas plan eco-system to facilitate new ideas

The author has posted comments on this articleTNN | Apr 30, 2014, 06.15AM IST KOLKATA: Tata Group is toying with the idea of introducing a central eco-system for incubating new ideas. It is yet to decide on the structure through which the incubation would be done. This could be through floating a new company or a new division or it could be done through Tata Industries as well. Tata Sons had set up Tata Industries in 1945.

Tata Industries' mandate was recast, in the early 1980s, to promote Tatas' entry into new and high-tech businesses. Sunil Sinha, the CEO of Tata Quality Management Services, a division of Tata Sons, said creating an infrastructure for incubation is in the back of the mind of the group.

Tata Group has an innovation forum called Tata Group Innovation Forum (TGIF) for fostering a culture of innovation in Tata companies. TGIF has been conducting a programme to encourage innovation in the group since 2006. "Innovation agenda will remain and be more focused now. Incubating innovative ideas is in our agenda. But in what form, we have not yet decided," he said. Sinha was in Kolkata on Tuesday to disclose the name of the winners in Tata Innovista 2014.

Tata Industries has initiated and promoted Tata ventures across several sectors, including control systems, information technology, financial services, auto components, advanced materials, telecom hardware and telecommunication services.

Commenting on Tata Innovista 2014, Mukund Govind Rajan, the brand custodian and member of group executive council of Tata Sons, said 43 innovations were shortlisted in the 'promising' category, which recognizes innovations that have been successfully implemented during the year and have accrued benefit.

"The combined economic benefit assessed from these innovations was $1 billion," he added. Rajan added that Tata Group is spending an average 2.5% of the turnover in R&D, which is much higher than the national average of 0.76% of GDP.

Ronda Rousey Calls Cyborg An It

In a recent interview with Yahoo Sports, Ronda Rousey made an alleged homophobic/transphobic comment about Cris Cyborg, calling her an it rather than a woman.

This girl has been on steroids for so long and [has been] injecting herself for so long that shes not even a woman anymore, Rousey was quoted as saying. Shes an it.

Although Rouseys comment has caused quite a stir, UFC president Dana White says that he doesnt believe Rousey meant the comment the way that everybody took it.

Shes not a transgender fighter, White. Shes a woman. What Ronda is saying is [Cyborg has] taken so many drugs, shes probably not a woman anymore. Shes not a transgender fighter. She didnt have a surgery. She called [Cyborg] an it, White continued. [Cyborg] calls Ronda a chicken. Is Ronda a chicken? Should Ronda be offended by being called a chicken? Grow the f*** up, everybody.

Cyborg tested positive for steroids in 2009, but has since been clean. White explained that all fighters talk about one another, and even admitted to trash talking Cyborg himself. I said when I saw her at the MMA Awards, she looked like Wanderlei Silva in a dress and heels, White admitted. And she did. Did she not? Who wants to dispute that she didnt look like Wanderlei? [She was] jacked up on steroids beyond belief and looked like Wanderlei Silva.

White has no intentions of signing Cyborg in the UFC as of now, but did say it could possibly happen in the future. He is hesitant due to her past performances and her use of steroids. Shes a nightmare in every way shape and form to bring in as a professional athlete in an organization like this, White said, and then added, Im not saying it could never be done.

Rouseys next fight will be against Alexis Davis in Las Vegas on July 5.

121 tons of trash removed from Texas beaches Saturday

A total of 7,334 volunteers hauled more than 121 tons of trash off Texas beaches Saturday for the 28th annual Texas General Land Office Adopt-A-Beach Spring Cleanup.

Thats more than 22,002 hours of labor all volunteer working to keep Texas public beaches clean. What an amazing effort, said Texas Land Commissioner Jerry Patterson. Thats nearly half a million dollars worth of work and a great example of how Adopt-A-Beach is one of the most successful volunteer efforts in the nation.

Saturdays cleanup wasnt just all work at most sites volunteers enjoyed a party afterward hosted by cleanup sponsors such as Schlumberger. And aside from the usual cigarette butts, beer cans and diapers, some pretty odd and interesting items were found, including a lost or discarded love letter on South Padre Island, a $100 bill found by a cub scout at Quintana Beach, a used pregnancy test kit on Cameron County beaches, false teeth in Galveston and a burned up purse and wallet at Boggy Creek Nature Park in Calhoun County.

Over the past 28 years, the Texas General Land Offices Adopt-A-Beach Program has brought more than 465,000 volunteers to the Texas coast. Those volunteers took more than 8,900 tons of trash with them. Adopt-A-Beach volunteers make Texas beaches cleaner for every living thing that depends on them, from local tourist bureaus to crabs, birds and turtles.
