Visit Greece | Beaches

The Greek coast has a total length of approximately 16,000 km. Half of this length includes the thousands of Greek islands scattered through the Greek seas, while the rest extends along the mainland.

The Greek shores are world-famous and exceedingly popular because they are known for their crystal clean and clear waters, as well as for their unique diversity.

The visitor has the opportunity to enjoy beaches stretching along over many kilometers, sheltered bays and coves, golden stretches of sand with dunes, pebble beaches, coastal caves with steep rocks and dark sand typical of volcanic soil. Every year hundreds of beaches and marinas in Greece are awarded with the Blue Flag.

Most of the thousands of Greek coasts are freely accessible and you can easily discover and enjoy them.

There are also many organized beaches in the country, with the necessary infrastructure providing high-quality services (umbrellas, reclining chairs, change booths, cafes, bar-restaurants etc), where, apart from swimming, you can enjoy water sports (water skiing, windsurfing, diving, etc) as well as other means of having fun in the water, such as the parasailing, inner tubes, bananas, wakeboard, jet ski, etc. All organized beaches also have manned lifeguard towers, ensuring safe swimming in the area.

Beaches: Rhode Island Department of Health

The State of Rhode Island has over 400 miles of coastline. During the summer months some of our beaches may see 10,000 visitors in a single day. In order to keep our beaches clean and safe it is important for you and your family to do your part in eliminating pollution and preventing illness.

The Beach Monitoring Program oversees water quality testing at public beaches during the summer months to make sure the water is safe for swimming.

Too much sun can cause painful burning and increase the risk of skin cancer. Look for a sunscreen product with both UVB and UVA protection and a sun protection factor (SPF) of 30 or higher. Apply sunscreen liberally at least 20 minutes before going into the sun, and reapply generously after swimming and throughout the day. Sunscreen is most effective when left on the surface of the skin; Do NOT rub it in thoroughly. Note that you should not use sunscreen on babies under age 6 months.

"Swimmer's Itch" is a skin reaction caused by an allergic reaction to a parasite. To avoid a reaction towel dry vigorously as soon as you get out and shower as soon as you can. Treatment may include the use of antihistomenes. Check with your healthcare provider if itching persists. (more)

Despite best efforts to monitor water quality and close beaches, people can get intestinal infections after being exposed to contaminated water. (more) Let us know if that happens to you so we can investigate and close the beach if appropriate.

The use of swim diapers and swim pants may give many parents and pool staff a false sense of security regarding fecal contamination. Check your toddlers diapers regularly and change them if needed. Dispose of soiled diapers in the trash. (more)

If the water looks scummy, don't go in as it may be polluted with harmful algae. (more)

Best Vacation Beaches in San Diego

If you're looking to vacation in San Diego but consider yourself a rookie when it comes to your knowledge of the destination, there are a few beaches that make the cut when enjoying the best of the city. The beaches are one of the best reasons to visit San Diego for the 70-degree weather and close-knit communities near the ocean. Here are a few locations to visit if you want to meet new people and spot a few sunsets from the sand!

Coronado Beach

Coronado Beach is a quaint spot that is tucked away on its own small island in San Diego. The beach offers stunning views of the sunset for a clean and peaceful environment that is often littered with elaborate sandcastles. Here, you'll find the Hotel Del Coronado right on the sand, as well as several high-end restaurants, bakeries, and coffee shops that are all within walking distance. Visitors will find both helicopters and planes flying overhead throughout the day, as well as an overall quiet location that is often deserted during the week.

In the winter, ice skating is available right on the sand for families to enjoy through the services of the Hotel Del.

Mission Beach

Known for its delicious pizza slices and wooden rollercoaster, Mission Beach is a family-friendly location that boasts a fun boardwalk and several shops. The location is a place to find break dancers, beach clothes, and carnival rides for a San Diegan beach that offers more than just the sand.

Mission Beach is more popular among college students due to its fun and lively environment that is known as a great place to practice longboarding, tanning, and jogging on the sand. It's often crowded on the weekends, but can be relaxing throughout the week. Lifeguards are also always on watch for those who want to swim or surf for an area that is safe.
