Freedom From Religion Says City Emails Prove Wrongdoing

When Green Bay's mayor wrote a letter to Pope Francis inviting him to make a pilgrimage to the "Shrine of Our Lady of Good Help"during his2015 trip to the U.S., the Freedom From Religion Foundation says he violated separation of Church and State.

Now the group says it's obtained documents that prove Mayor Jim Schmitt is using city staff and resources to promote a religious agenda.

To the Catholic Church, Pope Francis is a religious leader.

To Forbes magazine he's the 4th most powerful man in the world.

Which title motivated Mayor Jim Schmitt to write a letter inviting the Pontiff to Green Bay?

Freedom From Religion Foundation's Annie Laurie Gaylor says words like "pilgrimage" and signing the letter "your servant in Christ" make Schmitt'sintentions clear.

"He invited the Pope to come not as a dignitary, but as a religious figure," says Gaylor.

Which she says isagainst the law.

"Our concern is that he did this not as an individual Catholic but as Mayor of Green Bay using city letterhead and then our open records request has revealed on city time and also employing staff to further promote his personal religious mission. So his Chief of Staff and City Secretary were also using city time. For example to help set up meetings and create meeting agendas, so its just not appropriate,"says Gaylor. (You can read emails she obtained from the city below.)

Mayor Schmitt says he's done nothing wrong.

Treasure Island included in beach renourishment plan

TREASURE ISLAND Eroding beaches in this barrier island community will continue to be eligible for federal money for replacement sand after a push by Congressman David Jolly.

The Pinellas County Republican made the announcement Saturday while standing on a wide, sandy beach at the City of St. Petersburg Municipal Beach on Gulf Boulevard, joined by local officials and Florida Rep. Kathleen Peters, R-South Pasadena.

Although the narrow strips of sand at Sunset and Sunshine beaches on Treasure Island are scheduled for renourishment this summer, Jolly said authorization for the U.S. Army Corp of Engineers for future Treasure Island projects was set to expire in 2019.

The inclusion of Treasure Island in the Water Resources Reform and Development Act means area beaches would remain on the federal list until 2022 rather than potentially being dropped before the renourishment program is renewed by Congress.

Other Pinellas beaches are authorized until 2030 and beyond.

With the need to import extra sand every four or five years, the cost of these multimillion dollar projects could be saddled on state and local governments if the federal government removes its aid, a big concern for Pinellas tourism officials hoping to protect the areas top economic driver.

Jolly made beach funding a key campaign issue, promising to follow in the footsteps of his predecessor, the late Congressman Bill Young, an influential representative known for bringing major federal dollars to county beaches.

Beach renourishment is one of those issues that local representation has to fight hard for, said Jolly, an Indian Shores resident.

For decades the federal government has covered 60 percent of the cost of beach restoration, matched by state and county funds at 20 percent each.

Congress makes long-term eligibility approvals about every seven years and Pinellas County beaches always have been renewed, thanks in part to Youngs stature in the U.S. House of Representatives, Jolly said.

Be sure to enjoy Astronomy Day

There are plenty of ways to enjoy Astronomy Day in the Washington, D.C. area, says columnist Greg Redfern.

WASHINGTON -- Today is Astronomy Day in the United States and around the world. Since its inception in 1973 as a means to bring "Astronomy to the People," the day has been very successful in doing just that.

Astronomy Day is established by the lunar cycle so it changes from year to year. This is done to include the moon in telescope viewing when it's most dramatic, without it being so bright that it totally washes out the night sky.

Here in the DMV, we have a wonderful selection of astronomy clubs, colleges and museums that are dedicated to astronomy and space. Astronomy Day is also celebrated in October to take advantage of the changing night sky. October's Astronomy Day is October 4.

The Astronomical League, an organization comprised of more than 240 astronomy clubs and a major force in amateur astronomy, maintains the official Astronomy Day Webpage.

Though May 10 is the official Astronomy Day, related events go on throughout the month. The Northern Virginia Astronomy Club (NOVAC) will host one of the biggest Astronomy Day events in the DMV on May 31, 3 p.m. to 11 p.m. Each year, this has been a real crowd pleaser, as NOVAC goes all out with providing facilities, telescopes and speakers for the general public - especially families - to enjoy. I hope to be there this year with my own telescope.

I will be at George Mason University Observatory(check the website for weather updates)on May 12 to give a presentation on the Chesapeake Bay Impact Crater(CBIC). Afterwards, the Observatory's telescopes will be open to the public for observing.

You can see a monthly listing of DMV astronomy events at the Astronomy in D.C. Web site. This is a very nifty way to keep up on astronomy related events in our area. The site also has a comprehensive listing of resources that you can check to see what's in your area.

The night sky of May (once the clouds clear) has a great planetary lineup and a possible new meteor shower for skywatchers to enjoy.

Jupiter dominates the Western sky as it gets dark; it's the brightest "star" in that part of the sky. Binoculars held steady will show the four main moons of Jupiter. NASA's latest mission to Jupiter, Juno, is en route and will arrive in July 2016.
