KENNEDY SPACE CENTER, FL Boeing expects to launch the first unmanned test flight of their commercial CST-100 manned space taxi in early 2017, said Chris Ferguson, commander of NASAs final shuttle flight in an exclusive one-on-one interview with Universe Today for an inside look at Boeings space efforts. Ferguson is now spearheading Boeings human spaceflight capsule project as director of Crew and Mission Operations.

The first unmanned orbital test flight is planned in January 2017 and may go to the station, Ferguson told me during a wide ranging, in depth discussion about a variety of human spaceflight topics and Boeings ambitious plans for their privately developed CST-100 human rated spaceship with a little help from NASA.

Boeing has reserved a launch slot at Cape Canaveral with United Launch Alliance (ULA), but the details are not yet public.

If all goes well, the maiden CST-100 orbital test flight with humans would follow around mid-2017.

The first manned test could happen by the end of summer 2017 with a two person crew, he said.

And we may go all the way to the space station.

Boeing is among a trio of American aerospace firms, including SpaceX and Sierra Nevada Corp, vying to restore Americas capability to fly humans to Earth orbit and the space station by late 2017, using seed money from NASAs Commercial Crew Program (CCP) in a public/private partnership. The next round of contracts will be awarded by NASA about late summer 2014.

Thats a feat that America hasnt accomplished in nearly three years.

SERIOUSLY, one in ten Americans believe 'space aliens' behind MH370's disappearance – survey

One in ten Americans think 'space aliens' were involved in the disappearance if the Malaysian Airlines flight MH370, it was revealed today.

A survey found that nine per cent of the people believe 'space aliens or beings from another dimension were involved'.

Investigators are still continuing their search for the missing plane and the 239 people on board, which vanished from radars on March 8.

The search continues: Flight officer Rayan Gharazeddine on board a Royal Australian Air Force AP-3C Orion, searches for the missing Malaysia Airlines Flight MH370 in southern Indian Ocean, Australia

Disappeared: The Malaysia Airlines Boeing 777 which vanished almost two months ago without trace

All hands on deck: Crew on board survey ship HMS Echo in the southern Indian Ocean helping in the underwater search for the flight recorder from the missing Malaysia Airlines flight MH370

The poll by CNN and ORC International found that while most people in the U.S. believe the search for MH370 should continue, half believe authorities are searching in the wrong place.

Findings also showed that the vast majority (79 per cent) believe there are no survivors.

Just over half (52 per cent) think we will eventually find out what happened to the flight. However, a further 46 per cent say we will never know.

The survey comes as 11 terrorists with links to Al Qaeda were arrested in Kuala Lumpur and Kedah and questioned about being involved in the plane's disappearance.

Red Soxs Henry Owens Turns Heads By Nearly Tossing No-Hitter At Double-A

Owens exited Thursdays game against the New Hampshire Fisher Cats after yielding a two-out double to Andy Burns in the eighth inning. The 21-year-old allowed two runs on one hit and five walks while striking out six and improving his record to 4-2. Most importantly, Owens showed again why hes the Red Soxs top pitching prospect and an intriguing player with immense potential.

Owens ERA at Double-A through seven starts this season is 3.61. His WHIP is 1.18. Theres clearly still room for development especially when you consider he has yielded 3.8 walks per nine innings after issuing a season-high five free passes Thursday but the left-handers unhittable nature is nothing new. Owens has held his opponents hitless in four starts two in High-A and two in Double-A since last July, including Portlands season opener, in which the lefty struck out nine.

He left that (changeup) up a little bit and I was able to find a hole, Burns told reporters after breaking up Owens no-hit bid Thursday. He pitched real well. Mixed speeds. Hit his spots. Hes tall (6-foot-6) and the ball comes out of his hand well.

Owens threw 96 pitches in Thursdays outing, showing he was relatively efficient despite the high walk total and some fatigue seemingly settling in as the young hurler struggled in the eighth inning. According to reports, Owens mixed a mid 90s fastball with a heavy dose of changeups to keep the Fisher Cats off-balance.

Good fastball command. Good change-up command, Portland manager Billy McMillon told reporters after the game. But he knows he can do better. His pitch count went up because of the walks.

Owens went 11-6 with a 2.67 ERA in 26 starts split between Double-A and High-A last season. He has struck out 210 in 177 1/3 innings since the beginning of 2013 while holding opponents to a .185 average.

It might not be long before Owens earns another promotion, and the Red Sox certainly have a lot to be encouraged about as the former first-round pick continues to dominate in his third season in the organization.

Red Sox-Rangers Live: Yu Darvish Nearly Tosses No-Hitter As Texas Rolls 8-0

Final, Rangers 8-0: Yu Darvish came up just short in his bid for a no-hitter, but the right-handers one-hit gem paved the way for an 8-0 Rangers win in Arlington.

David Ortiz broke up Darvishs no-hitter with two outs in the ninth inning. The slugger beat the shift with a single into right field.

Darvish, who walked two, lost his perfect game with two outs in the seventh inning. Ortiz hit a popup into shallow right field that second baseman Rougned Odor and right fielder Alex Rios converged on. It looked like it was going to be another routine out, but the ball dropped. The official scorer ruled the play an error on Rios, although it wouldnt be surprising if it eventually gets changed to a hit.

Darvish struck out 12 in his winning effort. Clay Buchholz, meanwhile, struggled, surrendering six earned runs on 10 hits over 4 1/3 innings. Buchholz struck out three and walked two while suffering the loss.

For what its worth, the Red Sox never have had a perfect game thrown against them. The last no-hitter against the Red Sox came from the Seattle Mariners Chris Bosio on April 22, 1993.

11:15 p.m., Rangers 8-0: Rangers starter Yu Darvish fell one out short of a no-hitter.

David Ortiz beat the shift with two outs in the ninth inning. His single marked Bostons first hit of the game.

Darvish now exits after 8 2/3 innings of one-hit ball. Alexi Ogando will look to put the finishing touches on this one.

End 8th, Rangers 8-0: Craig Breslow worked a scoreless eighth inning for Boston.

More importantly, Yu Darvish now heads to the mound looking to complete a no-hitter. Dustin Pedroia, Shane Victorino and David Ortiz are due up in the ninth inning for the Red Sox.

Thai 'Red Shirts' Warn of Escalating Fight to Defend Govt

Thousands of pro-government "Red Shirts" today warned that any attempt to install an unelected premier could trigger a "civil war" as they massed here to take on rival protesters who have launched a "final battle" after the removal of Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra.

Thousands of police officers were on standby for the "Red Shirt" rally on the western outskirts of Bangkok as a large turnout is expected later this evening.

"The Red Shirts cannot accept the undemocratic and unconstitutional appointment of a prime minister," said Jatuporn Prompan, who heads the "Red Shirts".

He warned the Supreme Court and the Senate against discussing "unlawful" demands by the opposition to choose an interim government, saying: "It would be the beginning of a disaster for the country that will lead to civil war."

The anti-government People's Democratic Reform Committee (PDRC) launched its "all-out final battle" after 46-year-old Yingluck, Thailand's only woman premier, was ordered to step down by the Constitutional Court over abuse of power.

Emboldened by the ruling on Wednesday, the protesters intensified their efforts to bring down what remains of Yingluck's administration by laying siege to TV stations, surrounding state offices and demanding lawmakers help them install a non-elected premier.

The protesters, who have been campaigning for over six months for the ouster of the government, want the entire Cabinet to be removed and an unelected "people's council" to be set up to carry out reforms.

Jatuporn said: "As long as the country's democracy is not safe, we will be here." He warned that if there was a coup or an unelected prime minister installed, the Red Shirts will "escalate our fight immediately".

Hours after Yingluck and her nine ministers were removed from office, the Cabinet named deputy premier Niwattumrong Boonsongpaisan as acting prime minister.

But protest leader Suthep Thaugsuban told followers the Senate should select a new premier since the lower house had been dissolved since December.

NASA moon orbiter snaps image of 'Earthrise'

NASA's Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter captured an image of the Earth rising over the moon's horizon.

The Earth rises spectacularly as a tiny blue marble above the moon in a new NASA photo that hints at the fragility of humanity and the vastness of space.

NASA'sLunar Reconnaissance Orbitercaptured the image on Feb. 1 with its wide-angle camera, depicting a colorized view of the Earth rising over the 112-mile-wide (180 kilometers) Rozhdestvenskiy crater. NASA released a colorized version of thThe event was one of 12 such "earthrises" that occur every day from the perspective of the moon.

The LRO spacecraft's wide-angle camera takes images in a different way than most digital cameras. A typical cellphone camera has more than 5 million pixels, whereas a single frame of the LRO camera has fewer than 10,000 pixels. [Amazing Photos of Earth from Space]

But the LRO camera builds up a much larger image by taking multiple exposures as the spacecraft orbits, a technique known as "push-frame" imaging. Over the course of a month, the orbiter camera collects enough images to cover the whole moon.

The LRO usually spends its time staring at the lunar surface looking for signs of water or ice in permanently shadowed craters. But occasionally the spacecraft points into space to image the moon's exosphere, the thin atmosphere-like layer surrounding it, or to calibrate the craft's instruments. Sometimes, the spacecraft captures images of Earth (like this one) or other planets making their progress across the heavens.

In the image, Earth is a color composite of several frames, optimized for the colors blue, green and red. These colors match what the human eye detects, so they are true to what an average person might see.

NASA Spots Square-Shaped 'Hole' in the Sun (Video)

A NASA spacecraft has made a surprising find on the surface of the sun: a square-shaped "hole" in the star's outer atmosphere.

The dark square on the sun, known as a "coronal hole," is an area where the solar wind is streaming out of the sun at superfast speeds. NASA captured a video of the sun's square-shaped coronal hole between Monday and Wednesday (May 5-7) using the powerful Solar Dynamics Observatory (SDO).

The coronal hole appears dark in the NASA view because there is less material emitting light in the ultraviolet range of the spectrum used to make the video, according to a NASA video description. [Biggest Solar Storms of 2014 (Photos)]

"Inside the coronal hole you can see bright loops where the hot plasma outlines little pieces of the solar magnetic field sticking above the surface," SDO officials wrote in the video description. "Because it is positioned so far south on the sun, there is less chance that the solar wind stream will impact us here on Earth."

NASA's sun-watching Solar Dynamics Observatory is just one of a fleet of spacecraft keeping a close watch on the weather on Earth's parent star. In 2013, the sun experienced its peak activity of its 11-year solar weather cycle.

NASA Astronauts Perform Underwater Testing Of Tools For Future Mission To An Asteroid

Stan Love and Steve Bowen, two experienced NASA astronauts who between them had spent more than 62 hours in space on nine shuttle mission spacewalks, went underwater in a 40-foot-deep swimming pool in the Neutral Buoyancy Laboratory at NASAs Johnson Space Center on Friday to help engineers determine what astronauts will need on the space agencys next asteroid mission.

The swimming pool, which helps provide the lack of gravity needed for astronauts to practice for spacewalks, housed a mockup of the Orion spacecraft that would carry astronauts to the asteroid. There was also a mock-up of the robotic spacecraft that would be used to capture an asteroid and bring it into a stable orbit near the moon.

Were working on the techniques and tools we might use someday to explore a small asteroid that was captured from an orbit around the sun and brought back by a robotic spacecraft to orbit around the moon, Love said in a statement. When its there, we can send people there to take samples and take a look at it up close. Thats our main task: Were looking at tools wed use for that, how wed take those samples.

According to NASA, the tools that geologists use to collect core samples or to chip of rocks on Earth are not safe to be used in space. Therefore, Love and Bowen tried out a pneumatic hammer to give them a feel for whether a battery-powered version might be useful. The astronauts also evaluated a version of the spacesuit that could be worn on an asteroid.

We need some significant modifications to make it easy to translate. I cant stretch my arms out quite as far as in the [space station space suit], Bowen said. The work envelop is very small. So as we get through, we look at these tasks. These tasks are outstanding to help us develop what needs to be modified in the suit as well.

NASA has already started working on identifying an asteroid, which could be reached by a robotic mission to capture it and bring it into a stable orbit around the moon. Once the asteroid is at the desired postion, the Orion spacecraft and Space Launch System rocket would launch a crew of astronauts to explore it and gather samples.
