Xcelthera Inc and its joint research partner San Diego Regenerative Medicine Institute are granted U.S. Patent No. 8,716,017 entitled, Technologies, Methods, and Products of Small Molecule-Directed Tissue and Organ Regeneration from Human Pluripotent Stem Cells.
San Diego, CA (PRWEB) May 08, 2014
Xcelthera Inc, a major innovator in the stem cell research market and one of the first U.S. companies formed for clinical applications of human embryonic stem cell (human ES cell) therapeutic utility for unmet medical needs, and its joint research partner San Diego Regenerative Medicine Institute announced today that the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) has granted Patent No. 8,716,017 entitled, Technologies, Methods, and Products of Small Molecule-Directed Tissue and Organ Regeneration from Human Pluripotent Stem Cells. This newly-issued patent is the first among a portfolio of intellectual property of Xcelthera Inc covering PluriXcel human stem cell technology platform for large-scale production of high quality clinical-grade pluripotent human ES cell lines and their functional human neuronal and heart muscle cell therapy products.
Neurodegenerative and heart diseases are major health problems and cost the worldwide healthcare system more than $500 billion annually. The limited capacity of these two cell systems -- neurons and cardiomyocytes -- for self-repair makes them suitable for stem cell-based neuronal and heart therapies. Nevertheless, to date, the existing markets lack a clinically-suitable human neuronal cell source or cardiomyocyte source with adequate regenerative potential, which has been the major setback in developing safe and effective cell-based therapies for neurodegenerative and heart diseases. Xcelthera proprietary PluriXcel technology allows efficient derivation of clinical-grade human ES cell lines and direct conversion of such pluripotent human ES cells by small molecule induction into a large commercial scale of high quality human neuronal or heart muscle cells, which constitutes clinically representative progress in both human neuronal and cardiac therapeutic products for treating neurodegenerative and heart diseases.
PluriXcel technology of Xcelthera Inc is milestone advancement in stem cell research, offering currently the only available human cell therapy products with the pharmacological capacity to regenerate human neurons and contractile heart muscles that allow restitution of function of the central nervous system (CNS) and heart in the clinic. Through technology license agreement with San Diego Regenerative Medicine Institute, Xcelthera Inc has become the first in the world to hold the proprietary breakthrough technology for large-scale production of high quality clinical-grade pluripotent human ES cell lines and their functional human neuronal and heart cell therapy products for commercial and therapeutic uses.
As neurodegenerative and heart diseases incur exorbitant costs on the healthcare system worldwide, there is a strong focus on providing newer and more efficient solutions for these therapeutic needs. Millions of people are pinning their hopes on stem cell research. PluriXcel technology platform of Xcelthera Inc is incomparable, providing life scientists and clinicians with novel and effective resources to address major health concerns. Such breakthrough stem cell technology has presented human ES cell therapy derivatives as a powerful pharmacologic agent of cellular entity for a wide range of incurable or hitherto untreatable neurodegenerative and heart diseases. Introduction of medical innovations and new business opportunities based on PluriXcel technology will shape the future of medicine by providing pluripotent human ES cell-based technology for human tissue and function restoration, and bringing new therapeutics into the market.

Varanasi: For once, there is more politics than spirituality, or so it seems, in Varanasi, reputedly the most ancient living city on earth.
All around there is frenetic political activity. The deafening campaign for Monday's Lok Sabha election ended Saturday evening after all political players gave a final push in the sweltering heat.
Paul Benetto, an Italian on an Indian summer sojourn, is amazed. A taxi driver, he now prefers the cacophony of the election campaign in Varanasi over the serenity of the Buddhist stupa in Sarnath.
He is bewildered by the sea of "political caps" in different hues and colours. In broken English, he says the election scene has left him "speechless".
The temple town, said to be perched atop a 'trishul' (trident) held by Lord Shiva, its reigning deity, is choked with people from Gujarat, Delhi and other parts of the country to witness an epic battle between BJP's prime ministerial aspirant Narendra Modi, AAP leader Arvind Kejriwal and Ajay Rai of the Congress.
There are no vacant rooms in dharamshalas, hotels, paying guest houses and government-owned residential complexes.
All have been booked by different political parties for their leaders and supporters.
Modi, the BJP candidate, took out two impressive road shows in a show of strength. Kejriwal and his supporters are engaged in street meetings to woo the electorate.
In the summer heat, over 40 candidates, including a transgender, are campaigning relentlessly.
Modi fan Gopal Mishra told IANS that the city has already decided to go the Modi way. According to him, Modi's opponents are wasting their time.

UConn Commencement Address from Space
NASA Astronaut and UConn alum Rick Mastracchio #39;82 (ENG) delivers the 2014 UConn School of Engineering Commencement address from the International Space Station.

STORRS, Conn. - University of Connecticut alumnus Rick Mastracchio took a break from orbiting the globe on the International Space Station to deliver an address to students graduating from the university's School of Engineering on Saturday.
With a large black UConn banner and UConn baseball cap floating behind him, Mastracchio hovered between two space suits and spun upside down several times during the pre-recorded address for the 400 graduates and a crowd of about 5,000 at the university.
"I could not be there with you on this big day, but being in space I was trying to figure out how to make this speech different than all the other commencement addresses that are given each year," he said.
"And then I realized - I'm in a weightless environment. So maybe, I should give the speech in a different orientation."
Mastracchio, 54, who is on an eight-month stint on the space station, then floated upside down, before spinning back to an upright position, bringing laughs and cheers from graduates and their families.
"I probably have the best job on and off the planet," he said.
Kazem Kazerounian, dean of the engineering school, who set up the speech from space, said: "Many of us, faculty and students, were inspired to become engineers because of space exploration and this was a perfect way to bring more reality to our dreams."
Mastracchio, who will return to Earth next week aboard a Russian spacecraft after completing his fourth trip into space, had a final message as he grabbed and put on the UConn baseball cap.
"Go Huskies," he said, referring to the nickname for the school's sports teams, as he spun upside down again.

Among their ranks was Cheryl Howard, the actress whose husband Ron took several zero gravity flights when he was directing the film Apollo 13. On this day, however, Mr Howard had just come along to support his wife before the flight and would be remaining with his feet firmly on Earth.
Astronauts of course conduct their work in a zero gravity environment thousands of miles up in space.
But for $4,950 (2,939), the same sensation can by yours on the Zero Gravity Corporations (ZERO-G) G-FORCE ONE, a modified jet whose pilots induce weightlessness through a series of mid-air manoeuvres called parabolas.
Nasa puts its astronauts through a much more rigorous version of the same flights as part of their training, deliberately pushing participants to the stage of nausea in what has been colourfully nicknamed the vomit comet.
That detail was causing some preflight nerves, even though ZERO-Gs president Terese Brewster and her team of instructors assured us that we would not be subjected to anything as intense, during our briefing at an airport hotel.
As someone who long ago swore never to ride another rollercoaster and has often felt nauseous on boats, the prospect of motion sickness still worried me as I prepared boldly to go where few have gone before.
But within an hour, I was indeed floating, without any stomach churning discomfort, in the remarkable world of zero gravity as we repeatedly dived 12,000 feet before then being pinned to the matted floor by the gravitational force (G force) when we accelerated back up to the top of the arc.
Philip Sherwell enjoying some "blissful exhilaration" (STEVE BOXALL/ZERO-G)
Around me, my fellow passengers were pirouetting and somersaulting, not to mention delivering passable impressions of Superman flying through the air, arm punched out ahead.
In my case, it felt that I was tumbling and flailing rather than executing elegant acrobatic turns, but the experience was still one of blissful exhilaration as we shared an experience known only by a tiny fraction of the worlds population.
