Amgen-AstraZeneca Psoriasis Drug Scores – Analyst Blog

Amgen ( AMGN ) and partner, AstraZeneca ( AZN ), presented positive phase III data on their experimental psoriasis treatment, brodalumab. The candidate was evaluated in a phase III study, AMAGINE-1, in patients with moderate-to-severe plaque psoriasis.

Amgen and AstraZeneca said that the primary as well as secondary endpoints were achieved. Two doses of brodalumab (140 mg and 210 mg) were compared to placebo. While 83.3% of patients in the 210 mg group and 60.3% of patients in the 140 mg group achieved PASI 75 responses, only 2.7% of patients in the placebo arm achieved the same.

As far as PASI 90 response was concerned, 70.3% and 42.5% of patients in the 210 mg and 140 mg arms, respectively, achieved the same compared to 0.9% in the placebo arm. PASI 100 responses were achieved by 41.9% and 23.3% patients in the 210 mg and 140 mg arms, respectively, compared to just 0.5% in the placebo arm.

The PASI score basically measures psoriatic plaque redness, scaling and thickness and the extent of involvement in each region of the body.

Our Take

The phase III data on brodalumab is encouraging for both Amgen and AstraZeneca. These results bring Amgen and AstraZeneca a step closer to regulatory filing though two more phase III studies are still ongoing - AMAGINE-2 and AMAGINE-3. Results from these two head-to-head studies comparing brodalumab to Stelara (ustekinumab) should be out later this year. Both companies are working on strengthening their product portfolio and brodalumab is one of the key candidates in their pipeline. According to a recent press release issued by AstraZeneca, analyst estimates for brodalumab range between $0.5 billion - $1.5 billion.

However, the psoriasis market is highly crowded with treatments like Stelara and Otezla among others. Moreover, several companies have late-stage candidates in development for the psoriasis market.

Amgen and AstraZeneca are both Zacks Rank #3 (Hold) stocks. Some better-ranked stocks in the health care sector include Gilead Sciences ( GILD ) and Allergan ( AGN ). While Gilead is a Zacks Rank #1 (Strong Buy) stock, Allergan is a Zacks Rank #2 (Buy) stock.

More S'poreans heading to Brazil, but after World Cup

SINGAPORE: It is exactly one month to the World Cup, which takes place from June 12 to July 13, and travel agents are seeing more bookings to Brazil.

However, the three-fold increase, compared to the same period last year, is seen in travellers going after the World Cup.

As to why, many travel agents point to hotel room rates going up by almost 10 times, and airfares by about 15 to 30 per cent.

They also say that demand to catch the matches in Brazil is not as high as in previous World Cups, especially when compared to when South Korea and Japan were hosts in 2002.

"The distance to Brazil is almost 20 hours via flight, which means you actually need about three days of flying in and out of the country, said Alicia Seah, director of marketing communications at Dynasty Travel.

Secondly, it's the high costs. The tour package to watch the world cup this year is about S$10,000 to S$15,000 per person which includes air tickets, four nights accommodation plus the match tickets."

But World Cup fever has clearly got newly-weds Simon Tam and Serena Tay hooked.

The two football fans held a football match for friends at the floating platform at Marina Bay as part of their pre-wedding festivities.

In addition, they will leave for their honeymoon next month -- a 23-day-long trip which includes a stop in Rio de Janeiro for a second round match.

"It is more expensive than the usual trips, like if you go to Europe or Japan or New Zealand, said Serena Tay, who is an asset manager.

JoGuru Lists the best Backpacking Countries in the World

(PRWEB UK) 12 May 2014

As Eugene Fodor rightly put it; One doesnt have to be rich to travel well. Travelling is a great way to lose and also find oneself at the same time. Someone once truly said that to travel is to really take a journey within. What better way to travel than to be a part of the local culture, embracing life in a new city like one of its own? Backpacking is a form of budget travel where a tourist travels with nothing but his backpack, courage and lots of charm!

There are a number of countries that have special visas for backpackers that allow them to earn while they travel. JoGuru lists some of the best backpacking destinations around the world.

1.Mexico

Mexico is a backpackers paradise. A real bang for the buck and an absolute treat for solo travellers, Mexico becomes a friend the minute one steps foot on it. Its extremely safe and offers plenty of opportunities for all kinds of travellers it has a diverse cultural heritage, breathtaking natural beauty and lots of mystical towns to explore. The food is well renowned and the infamous Mexican chilli casts an intoxicating spell on the most seasoned gourmand. Wash all this down with a refreshing aguas frescas and finish up with the rich arroz con leche, one will find heaven on earth!

2.Portugal

Perhaps the best bet for a backpacker in Europe, Portugal is every bit as charming and captivating as its more glamorous and expensive sisters, Spain and Italy. Its location also makes it a good entry point to the rest of Europe. All good things in Portugal are, like they say about life...free! Most of the best sights in Porto are free of charge and Lisbon has an interesting variety of hostels for a budget traveller. Besides, most of what Portugal has to offer is hiding in plain sight; its old world, laid back elegance, the romance of the hill-side retreat Sintra, the jazz filled streets of the upper city in Lisbon. Portugal is exotic yet warm, overwhelming yet homely.

3.Indonesia

Its easy to forget that one is on a shoe string budget in Indonesia. Extremely cheap and multifarious, Indonesia offers so much more bounce for the ounce! Imagine a country that is made of 17000 islands, all which have different topographies and natural wonders! Indonesia is so much more than lying on the pristine beaches of Bali. A surfers paradise and a gypsys haven, this country is a small wonder in itself. Although transportation could get a little tricky here, the food and sleep options will more than make up for the discomfort.

4.Argentina

5 Reasons to Love 'Mad Men's' New Star: The IBM 360

By Helen A.S. Popkin

The commotion kicked up by the new super computer at "Mad Men" advertising agency SC&P is nothing compared to the havoc it wreaked at IBM after it was announced on April 7, 1964 -- 50 years before its AMC debut.

The IBM System 360 led the computer revolution. "Mad Men" designers spent two days at the Computer History Museum in Mountain View, Calif., sketching the real thing to get it exactly right. What's the big deal? Museum curator Dag Spicer gave us the the true story about "Mad Men's" newest featured player.

The SLT (Solid Logic Technology) module, the basic building block of the 360s electronic circuits and IBMs homegrown technology.

The IBM 360 really did change everything

Clever TV critics point to the "2001: Space Odyssey" allusions hidden throughout the "Mad Men" episode featuring the IBM 360 debut -- plunked right in the middle of SC&P's "creative lounge." But unlike the monolith which confronts apes in Stanley Kubrick's masterpiece, the room-sized computer is more than just a metaphor for epochal change. As Don Draper says to Harry Crane, In fact its quite literal.

Spicer confirms, "It was a massive disruption for IBM and computing, and the biggest development project the company has ever taken on, before or since."

The IBM 360 is the first computer able to upgrade

Marketed to serve every degree of industry, "the IBM 360 was a response to an internal crisis," Spicer says.

Prior to the 360's development, IBM had six or seven mainframe computer lines able to process large amounts of data for either business or science -- just not both. To add to the cost and confusion, each line required its own sales and support team. If a customer wanted to upgrade to a bigger mainframe, the software on the old computer had to be completely rewritten. "It was very confusing for salesmen and too expensive to support," Spicer says.

Recap: Mad Men, Season 7, Episode 5, The Runaways

Is there some sort of quota for totally extraneous, skin-crawling, blood-curdling moments that Mad Men needs to fulfill per season? Despite all the moments that made me want to drink myself into a Freddy Rumsen-esque stupor, The Runaways was a great episode. And there are only two left! Something has to be said for a show that riles you up and leaves you hanging. Thats good TV.

Lets get started:

WHAT IS WRONG WITH GINSBERG?!

We all know that the concept of a super computer is frightful a digital journalist like me fears them daily but this was too much. Driven mad by the hum of technology and paranoid from the sight of Lou and Jim Cutler canoodling in the air conditioned lair, Ginsberg arrives at Peggys apartment to work and decides to make a move. They need to procreate, because the super computer is turning everyone homosexual! If there was a way of doing it without having sex, Id do it! he says. She gives that one a firm pass.

Ginsberg then takes it upon himself to slice off his nipple and hands it to Peggy in a small box. This may have been a deranged romantic gesture of sorts. Its my nipple. Its the valve, he says proudly. Hes removed from the office on a stretcher with restraints. Get out while you can! he yells back at Peggy. And he was just starting to grow on us, that Ginsberg.

Remember nice little Stephanie from California?

Shes eight months pregnant. And a hippie! And her baby daddys in jail and hes comin to getcha! So naturally Don decided to give Stephanie his (Megans) home address in the canyons and invited her over for some R&R and cash. The dreams of Sharon Tate are still alive in Laurel Canyon.

You are truly magnetic. What do you do? Didnt Don tell you? Im an actress.

Shes talking about your aura, Megan.

Do you have any meat? Ive been dreaming about it.

Stem cell treatments reaching patients

Neurosurgeon and stem cell researcher, Joseph Ciacci M.D. will soon start a clinical trial of stem cells to treat paralysis from spinal cord injury.

After many years of waiting, a flood of new regenerative-cell therapies is finally reaching patients. Hundreds of clinical trials for these experimental treatments are under way across the world.

In the United States, 774 trials with stem or other regenerative cells are open to patients or soon will be, according to clinicaltrials.gov, which lists government-approved clinical testing in this country and abroad. Of that total, 147 are taking place in California.

One of the most difficult tests involving stem cells repairing spinal-cord damage that has caused complete loss of movement and sensation below the injury site is set to begin soon at UC San Diego.

Patients in that study will get injections of fetal-derived neural stem cells in and around the injury site, along with physical therapy and immune-system drugs in case theres a reaction to the stem cells. The trial will use a device that delivers precisely targeted micro-injections of cells to the targeted areas.

The clinical trial will test safety and look for early signs of efficacy, said Dr. Joseph Ciacci, a UC San Diego neurosurgeon leading the testing.

A study published a year ago found that in rats with spinal-cord injuries, the neural stem cells significantly improved movement in the hind paws. Ciacci, who co-authored that study, saw the cells proliferate and fill in a spinal-cord cavity that had resulted from the injuries. Such results supported testing the therapy in people, he said, but he declined to say whether he expected to see any improvement in those patients.

I really dont know, because its not been done, Ciacci said.

The clinical trial is expected to start in June. Its intended for adults 18 to 65 years old who suffered their injury at least one year ago but no more than two years ago. For more information, visit utsandiego.com/ucsdspinal or call Amber Faulise at (858) 657-5175.

Another type of stem cells, mesenchymal stromal, might be described as the duct tape of regenerative cells. Generally derived from bone marrow, they are being tested for treatment of pulmonary fibrosis, multiple sclerosis, kidney transplants, liver cirrhosis, osteoarthritis of the knee, stroke and many other conditions. Worldwide, 226 trials are being conducted with these cells, including 45 in the U.S. and 12 in California, according to clinicaltrials.gov.

Cord Banking, Cell Therapy Helps Treat Deadly Diseases

SPRINGFIELD, Mo. -- A child with a life threatening disease is heart wrenching for parents. Suddenly they are faced with no easy way to get a match for stem cells that could save their child.

With cell therapy, there is a way to do that but it starts in the delivery room.

Delanie Rinne's fourth child, Ezekial, was born earlier this year and even though he'll get older; proof of that day is being stored at Core23 BioBank in Springfield.

"We decided to look into banking the cord blood because we know that this is probably our last biological child," says Rinne.

Core23 stores your child's blood, plasma or tissue from the umbilical cord to help treat 81 different diseases.

"If I had a child that has Leukemia and I was pregnant then that would be a treatment option."

Emily and Michael Perry opened the private cord bank as another option for parents.

"We see that cell therapy is surpassing bone marrow, we truly believe that it is the medicine of the future."

"Cell therapy is taking a healthy, viable cell and putting it into somebody's body to treat a disease or a condition."

The process starts in the delivery room and ends in a hydrogen tank in their lab.
