Cryptocurrency Round-Up: Darkcoin Rise Continues; Dogecoin Saved My Life & Bitcoin Explainer Videos

As bitcoin prices stabilise, darkcoin continues its rapid rise while the dogecar campaign saves someone's life.

Bitcoin has had almost a week now of no significant change in value. It has been hovering around the $440 (261) mark for since last Monday, with this period of relative calm coming after a month of turmoil for world's leading cryptocurrency.

The rest of the market has also been relatively stable reflecting the major ties all other cryptocurrencies have to bitcoin despite their best efforts to move out of its shadow.

There is one however which has been bucking the trend of the last week, and that is the anonymity-focused darkcoin.

Darkcoin rise shows no sign of stopping

In the last 24 hours darkcoin has seen its price jump 53% putting its market capitalisation now over $30 million - which is up from $11 million just seven days ago.

The altcoin which promises much more anonymity than bitcoin has seen its price rocket in recent days because of the release of an updated version (release candidate 2 or RC2) of its secure and anonymous payment system called DarkSend.

Some on the darkcoin Reddit thread believe that it could soon overtake litecoin as the world's second biggest cryptocurrency, though it has a long way to go considering litecoin's market cap is almost $300 million.

Darkcoin promises to remove the ability of people to track payments through the blockchain, saying this is a huge flaw in the way bitcoin works.

Workington Comets into cup semi-finals after win in Glasgow

By John Walsh

Last updated at 12:30, Monday, 19 May 2014

Glasgow Tigers 40 Workington Comets 50: Workington Comets produced a highly-charged performance at Glasgow to book their place in the semi-final of the League Cup.

Rene Bach

Ahead from heat six, and needing to win by seven points, the Comets finally clinched their objective in the final race as top pair Rene Bach and Josh Grajczonek gated well for a 5-1.

Gating was the key to Workington's success as they consistently got away in the majority of races to pose serious questions of the home side.

Bach and Grajczonek both reached double figures and were the top scoring riders in the meeting. Bach had three race wins and Grajczonek one, while Workington in total had nine heat winners.

The only real concern for the Comets was at reserve where the Glasgow pair outscored their Workington counterparts 14-5.

Ashley Morris had a particularly disappointing meeting with two retirements through mechanical problems and an exclusion following a fall. Morris, in fact, was the only Comet who did not register a heat win.

His partner Chris Mills scored a very important win in heat six. He gated and, along with Bach, team rode through the four laps to put Workington in front for the first time.

Softball: Newman hoping regional start of new era

The top three seeds at the 1A Eastland Regional could very well be different rungs on a ladder even if they aren't currently ordered from top to bottom in terms of overall softball success.

The Milledgeville Missiles - the No. 3 seed are the defending state champions. Over the last decade, the program which once was a co-op with Polo has been one of the best in the Sauk Valley. The state championship was the culmination of that ascension.

Despite that and another NUIC East title, the Missiles are the No. 3 seed, forcing them to prove that they are still the power from the last few years.

The Amboy Cilppers the No. 1 seed were once an afterthought in the spring. That hasn't been the case the last few years. Amboy has won three straight regional titles.

However the last 2 years, the Missiles have ousted the Clippers in the sectional round. It's about time in the Clippers' minds that they move up a rung.

The second seed appears to be the upstart - the Newman Comets. Only three of the 12 players on the roster are seniors, and for the first time in program history, the Comets fielded a sophomore team.

At 13-11 and with a regular-season win over the Missiles, Newman hopes this regional can be a springboard to better things in years to come.

"We talked about that after Saturday's game (a 4-3 loss to Bureau Valley)," Newman coach J.D. Waldschmidt said. "We have two teams for the first time. We lose only three players. Win or lose, we want this regional to inspire the program for the future."

The Comets beat Milledgeville 11-5 in extra innings on a windy day on April 16. If the Missiles beat AFC today, they will play Newman Tuesday at 4:30 p.m. in Lanark.

The game was originally scheduled for Wednesday, but it was moved to Tuesday because of Newman's graduation.

Coinciding with Uncommon Ground: Land Art in Britain 1966 1979, David Nash returns to YSP in 2014 following his major 2010 exhibition at the Park. Two contrasting works, White Planting and Black Dome, overlook the Park's historic lakes demonstrating the artist's eloquent understanding of trees and the different properties of wood. Echoing Nash's famous Ash Dome, planted in 1977, White Planting comprises 49 Himalayan birch trees, which, planted in seven rows of seven, will grow to form a white cube on the lake's embankment. Referencing the natural cycle of wood, Black Dome is made from coal and charred oak. The work complements Nash's site specific Seventy-one Steps, a commission on the walking route to Longside Gallery.

Splashdown! SpaceX Dragon Spacecraft Returns

Mon, May 19, 2014

SpaceX's Dragon cargo spacecraft splashed down at 3:05 p.m. EDT Sunday, in the Pacific Ocean, approximately 300 miles west of Baja California, returning more than 3,500 pounds of NASA cargo and science samples from the International Space Station.

A boat will carry the Dragon spacecraft to a port near Los Angeles, where it will be prepared for a return journey to SpaceX's test facility in McGregor, Texas, for processing. Some cargo, including a freezer packed with research samples collected aboard the space station, will be removed at the port in California and returned to NASA within 48 hours.

"The space station is our springboard to deep space and the science samples returned to Earth are critical to improving our knowledge of how space affects humans who live and work there for long durations," said William Gerstenmaier, associate administrator for human exploration and operations.

"Now that Dragon has returned, scientists can complete their analyses, so we can see how results may impact future human space exploration or provide direct benefits to people on Earth."

Investigations included among the returned cargo could aid in better understanding the decreased effectiveness of antibiotics during spaceflight while also improving antibiotic development on Earth. Others could lead to the development of plants better suited for space and improvements in sustainable agriculture.

The T-Cell Activation in Aging experiment, which also launched to space aboard Dragon, seeks the cause of a depression in the human immune system while in microgravity. The research could help researchers develop better protective measures to prevent disease in astronauts.

Dragon is the only space station resupply spacecraft capable of returning large amounts of cargo to Earth. The spacecraft lifted off from Cape Canaveral Air Force Station in Florida April 18, carrying approximately 5,000 pounds of supplies and science investigations to the space station. The mission was the third of at least 12 cargo resupply trips SpaceX plans to make to the space station through 2016 under NASA's Commercial Resupply Services contract.

Nation digest: Commercial ship back from space station

FLORIDA

SpaceX ship returns cargo from station

The commercial cargo ship Dragon returned to Earth from the international space station on Sunday, bringing back nearly two tons of science experiments and old equipment for NASA.

SpaceXs Dragon splashed into the Pacific just five hours after leaving the orbiting lab.

After a one-month visit, the cargo ship was set loose Sunday morning. Astronaut Steven Swanson, the station commander, released it using the big robot arm as the craft zoomed more than 260 miles above the South Pacific.

The SpaceX Dragon is the only supply ship capable of returning items to Earth. The others burn up on reentry. This was the fourth Dragon to bring back goods from the space station; with 3,500 pounds aboard, it came down off Mexicos Baja California coast.

NASA is paying SpaceX and Virginia-based Orbital Sciences Corp. to make station deliveries. Orbital is next up, next month. Russia, Europe and Japan also make occasional shipments.

Spoiler alert: Amber Rose totally stole the red carpet thunder at the Billboard Music Awards. While she pretty much always turns heads with her fashion choices, she went above and beyond with tonight's ensemblenamely her HUGE sunglasses. And by huge, I mean they literally cover half of her face.

When we saw the Queen of Hangout Festival and her gargantuan shades (which came from Pharrell's Moncler collaboration, NBD), we appropriately freaked out. Twitter was right there with usit wouldn't be an awards show without a Twitter freakout, right? Check out some of our favorite observations:
