NSA tells NZ spies: 'Sniff it all'

Documents released by US whistle blower Edward Snowden allegedly show New Zealand links to mass surveillance from overseas spy agencies, a new book on his revelations show.

The documents were published in journalist Glenn Greenwalds book, No Place to Hide, which tells the story of Snowdens disclosures.

Links between NZ and NSA have been revealed before, when Snowden said last year that NZ was involved in mass spying. The New Zealand Government

One NSA document told New Zealands security services and those of other Five Eyes nations to "sniff it all, know it all, collect it all, process it all and exploit it all".

The Five Eyes is a spying alliance between New Zealand, Britain, Canada, Australia and the United States.

A slideshow showed Government Communications Security Bureau spies how to operate a system that trawled through massive amounts of phone numbers, email addresses and online chat.

Other files state New Zealand was forwarded intercepted phone calls, texts and emails between the Brazilian president and her staff.

GCSB was also briefed on NSAs efforts to put back doors into private companies computer networks, and given access to a program called Homing Pigeon which allowed in-air passenger jet conversations to be monitored, according to the book.

Spy boss Ian Fletcher last week refused to confirm if Snowden had files relating to New Zealand and if so, what they contained.

Prime Minister John Key has earlier said he had no concerns about Snowden's revelations, and that they would not challeged the integrity of GCSB.

Open Season: Sheriff Hodgson talks of changed stance on assault weapons

By MARC FOLCO

May 25, 2014 12:00 AM

Bristol County Sheriff Thomas Hodgson spoke eloquently at a Second Amendment Night recently, sponsored by the Fairhaven Republican Town Committee and held at the West Island Improvement Association Hall in Fairhaven.

Among many topics covered, Hodgson interestingly attributed an increase in the number of women obtaining firearms licenses to recent major storms.

"Hurricane Katrina is a good example of how and why women need the proper tools to protect themselves," he said. "People need guns for more than just hunting and target practice."

The Sheriff explained that during the aftermath of the storm, women were home alone, many with their children, when vicious gangs of looters went house to house, stealing, beating and, he said, sometimes murdering women in their homes because their husbands hadn't been able to get home through the mayhem.

Hodgson also said that the primary duty of a sheriff is to uphold the Constitution and he, along with many sheriffs from across the country, are becoming increasingly upset with encroachments on the Constitution, especially those upon the Second Amendment.

He stated that he is a supporter of the Second Amendment and believes that American citizens have the right to bear arms unequivocally.

"It's a violent society," he said. "Nobody in this country should feel that they shouldn't defend themselves."

Hodgson said that too many politicians are pushing for gun control and bans on certain guns, calling it a "Band-aid approach, and certainly not the solution."

Leahy: Constitutional amendment needed on campaign financing

MONTPELIER -- Vermont and the U.S. Senates most senior member are initiating efforts to reverse the U.S. Supreme Courts recent campaign finance rulings but taking different tacks.

The Vermont Legislature became the first in the country last month to pass a resolution that calls for a constitutional convention to reverse the high courts rulings that critics say trend toward looser limits on campaign contributions to the unfair advantage of wealthy donors and big business.

Sen. Patrick Leahy has called a June 3 hearing of the Senate Judiciary Committee, which he chairs, to address the rulings. But he said Thursday hed rather see Congress craft an amendment, rather than have a constitutional convention that could be open to any topic. He said either route faces long odds, but it was a good idea to "start the conversation."

"Ive always worried about a constitutional convention that could be opened up to all kinds of things -- a constitutional amendment that would do away with most of our environmental laws or ... might dramatically change whos allowed to vote," he said.

The Democrat from Vermont, who will mark 40 years in the Senate in January, said in an interview with The Associated Press that hes interested in a tightly drawn constitutional amendment to reverse the effects of the courts decisions in the Citizens United and McCutcheon cases.

The rulings favor arguments that most campaign money caps are impermissible limitations on free speech.

Three versions of a campaign finance amendment have been offered in the Senate and 11 in the House. All the proposals seek to reverse the effects of the Citizens United decision of 2010 and the McCutcheon decision this year.

In the earlier ruling, the court said government restrictions on corporate independent expenditures on elections were unconstitutional in violation of the First Amendment. The McCutcheon decision held that aggregate limits on campaign contributions to multiple candidates and political action committees also are unconstitutional.

A constitutional convention as requested by the Vermont Legislature would be the first since the framers met in Philadelphia in 1787. All 27 amendments have been proposed by Congress. Two-thirds of the states -- 34 -- would have to call for a convention and three-quarters -- 38 -- would be needed to ratify an amendment by convention.

By the congressional route, two-thirds of both the House and Senate would have to support an amendment to reverse court decisions that most Republicans have cheered -- an unlikely prospect in the near term.
