CEDAR FALLS | The Freedom Rock is coming to Black Hawk County and Cedar Falls.
Greenfield artist Ray "Bubba" Sorensen II, who started painting, and repainting, a huge roadside boulder near there with patriotic images annually since 1999, said he's accepted a proposal from Cedar Falls American Legion Post 237 members Sid Morris and Tom Hagarty to locate and paint a Freedom Rock here, possibly late next year at the earliest.
Sorensen has launched a Freedom Rock Tour to locate and paint a rock in each of the state's 99 counties, with local support.
That is being headed up here by Morris and Hagarty, both veterans and former members of the Cedar Falls City Council, who will endeavor to raise about $5,000 to cover Sorensen's expenses for the local project.
"There's a lot of rich veteran history in the county," Sorensen said. "I'm excited to explore the options of what they will want to portray."
Morris and Hagarty said a committee will be formed to propose a number of themes or ideas to Sorensen, who will come up with a final design.
The Freedom Rock near Greenfield, just off the Greenfield-Guthrie Center exit on Interstate 80, took on a Black Hawk County theme in 2012, as Sorensen painted it with images of Waterloo's five Sullivan brothers killed during World War II. It also featured quadruple-amputee sailor Taylor Morris of Cedar Falls, Sid Morris' grandson, disabled in a bomb blast in Afghanistan.
The elder Morris said he's happy the rock is coming to Black Hawk County and Cedar Falls.
"Bubba Sorensen is quite good, and it's been very popular," Morris said. "A large number of counties have applied to be recipients of the rock. I admire his work. It gives us an opportunity to to recognize the veterans who have served in each county, and the value the veterans have given to this state."
In all, Sorensen said 72 of the 99 counties have applied for and been accepted for a Freedom Rock and, of those, he's been able to complete 20 so far. Black Hawk County is among the latest counties to apply and be accepted, Sorensen said. He said applications are accepted on a first come, first served basis, including a down payment for his expenses.

A federal bankruptcy judge is becoming increasing concerned that Freedom Industries may abandon its former Elk River chemical storage facility without completing a proper environmental cleanup of the site of the January chemical spill that contaminated the drinking water supply for hundreds of thousands of residents across the region.
U.S. Bankruptcy Judge Ronald Pearson says that the Freedom bankruptcy proceeding has not progressed adequately, and that too much of the companys limited cash is being earmarked for attorneys, perhaps leaving not nearly enough to complete remediation required by existing enforcement orders from the state Department of Environmental Protection.
In a seven-page order filed Friday evening, Pearson said recent bankruptcy case filings by Freedoms lawyers cause him to fear [Freedom] is not sufficiently committed to compliance with the demolition and cleanup orders of the DEP or other agencies of the state and federal government.
Pearson cited language in Freedoms proposed plan for liquidating the company stating that, while efforts will be undertaken to remediate the site, there are financial limitations to what Freedom can viably undertake by way of compliance with the remediation plan for its Etowah Terminal, site of the Jan. 9 leak of Crude MCHM and other chemicals into the Elk River. Negotiations are ongoing with DEP regarding the financial cleanup parameters, Freedom had said in its liquidation plan, filed with the court in mid-August.
Freedoms liquidation plan stated that the company intends to satisfy the remediation plan for $850,000 or less, plus applicable consulting costs, or alternatively seek to abandon the Etowah site (subject to order of the bankruptcy court).
Pearson noted that Freedom is already under orders from DEP to dismantle the Etowah Terminal and remediate the site.
The court believes this environmental responsibility has the highest administrative priority for funds, the judge wrote. Nothing in the proposed plan and disclosure statement give the court comfort that this is understood. This expressed intention of the debtor to potentially abandon the Etowah site should DEP not be satisfied with whatever remediation could be done for a cost of $850,000 is no comfort. It causes the court to believe that serious questions exist as to the extent to which the debtor intends to comply with existing demolition and cleanup orders and pay necessary environmental administrative claims to do so.
The judge scheduled a hearing for Sept. 23 to allow Freedom to address the concerns expressed in Fridays order and to outline a plan to fund all remaining demolition and reclamation required by state and federal regulatory agencies.
Pearson outlined his concerns in an order in which he rejected Freedoms request to extend the timeframe for the company to have the exclusive right to submit a bankruptcy plan and in put on hold pending requests from various lawyers and consultants providing services to Freedom during the bankruptcy proceeding.
The judge cited substantial existing and escalating administrative costs of the case and incomplete and unknown site remediation work and said mounting questions about the way the case is being handled prohibit him from moving forward at this point to distribute Freedoms limited resources to creditors and claimants.

A vehicle navigation tool created at UC Riverside can cut electric vehicle energy use up to 51 percent.
RIVERSIDE, Calif. (www.ucr.edu) Researchers at the University of California, Riversides Bourns College of Engineering have shown that a vehicle navigation tool they created can cut electric vehicle energy use up to 51 percent.
The researchers tested the eco-routing navigation system which takes into account real-time traffic information, road type and road grade on three routes around Riverside. Using road testing and computer simulations, they studied three types of navigation systems: shortest distance, least time and least energy.
They found:

The researchers, who are part of the Bourns College of Engineering Center for Environmental Research and Technology, outlined their findings in a report to the California Energy Commission, which paid for the study with a $95,000 grant. The researchers are: Guoyuan Wu, an assistant research engineer; Matthew Barth, the director of the research center; and Kanok Boriboonsomsin, an associate research engineer.
Past research by these UC Riverside engineers has shown that the eco-routing navigation systems can potentially reduce fuel consumption and greenhouse gas emissions from conventional fossil fuel-powered vehicles by five percent to 15 percent.
For electric vehicles, the benefits of the eco-routing navigation system go beyond energy and emission savings. The technology can cut down so-called range anxiety, meaning the driver of an electric vehicle fearing he or she wont be able to complete a trip without running out of electricity to power the cars battery.

The army of Google Glass owners is still quite small, but you can already make their life miserable if you encounter one. German artist and programmer Julian Oliver devised a small gadget that detects Google Glass on the local Wi-Fi. If it detects Glass, the device kicks it off the Wi-Fi.
Cyborg Unplug sniffs the air for these signatures, looking for devices its owner has selected to ban. If a banned device is discovered an alarm is triggered (LED, audio or message). Further, if that device is found to be connected to a network that Cyborg Unplug is trained to guard, a stream of special de-authentication packets are sent to disconnect it. It does this automatically, without any interaction required from its owner.
The Cyborg Unplug has evolved out of Oliver's Glasshole.sh script that detects Google Glass on Wi-Fi networks and kicks it out. Julian Oliver's gadget is in the same spirit as the Stop the Cyborgs campaign.

There are countless ways people can spy on you nowadays - from hidden microphones to Google Glass, drones and security cameras.
If this makes you feel paranoid, a firm has created a router that detects such surveillance devices and blocks them from accessing your Wi-Fi network.
Owners of the Cyborg Unplug, can also disconnect all target devices from any network they are associated with, including paired connections with phones.

With most of the Justice League missing presumed dead by the world and the Crime Syndicate in cataclysmic control, the pressure is on Cyborg.

While we might drool over technology and gadgets that make us into virtual cyborgs or commanders of an army of flying robots, privacy advocates are more concerned about the potential risks and violations that could happen. Enter Unplug, a hand-sized gadget that may not be able to completely keep out Glass users and drones from your home or business establishment but will at least keep them off your Internet network and hinder them from uploading and spreading their spy shots.
In theory, Cyborg Unplug works by sending de-authentication signals to Google Glasses, Dropcams, drones, wireless microphones, and other similar monitoring or spying devices, kicking them off your network and potentially interrupting any upload or streaming that they are doing. Unplug identifies such devices via their hardware (MAC) addresses, which are unique per device and which these devices broadcast when trying to connect to a network. Unplug technically isn't a jammer, which might be illegal in some cases, since it doesn't disrupt signals by flooding it with noise. Cyborg Unplug tries to be legal in most cases.
There is, however, one use case where it might be illegal. In its default "Territory Mode" operation, Unplug can kick out suspected devices off your own network, but owners will still be able to connect to the Internet via other means, especially with smartphone tethering. In an optional "All Out Mode", it will try to break off any other connection the device might have, which might be illegal in some jurisdictions. Unfortunately, at the moment, it can't do that for those using Bluetooth tethering.
Cyborg Unplug's software will be released as open source and uses a "glasshole.sh" script that was specifically developed to kick out Glass users from local networks. Pre-orders for Unplug will start on September 30. There will be two models available. $50 will get you a basic package but the $100 will have more functionality, like the ability to set alarms, like an LED flash, audible alarm, or messages.

Northern Illawarra dog owners are joining forces and preparing to fight for their off-leash beaches in the face of controversial changes to Wollongong City Council's dogs on beaches policy.
A Facebook page dedicated to the cause has attracted more than 2200 likes, while the Wollongong Dog Community group has gathered 250 email subscribers in less than two weeks.
The community action group, which held its first meeting in Thirroul on Saturday, plans to raise a number of concerns at a meeting with councillors in coming weeks.
Under planned changes to its dogs on beaches and parks policy, the council has recommended dogs only be allowed on Sharkeys, McCauleys and Little Austinmer beaches at restricted times, provided they are on a leash.

Singapore, 8 September 2014 Singapore Technologies Engineering Ltd (ST Engineering) today announced that its aerospace arm Singapore Technologies Aerospace Ltd (ST Aerospace), through its wholly owned subsidiary ST Aerospace Engines Pte Ltd (STA Engines) will be injecting its pro rata share of US$20.8m (approximately $25.98m), as additional capital into its Xiamen-based engine MRO joint venture company, ST Aerospace Technologies (Xiamen) Company Limited (STATCO). The planned additional capital injection is subject to regulatory approvals by the Chinese authorities. Upon injection of the funds, STA Engines total share capital contribution in STATCO will stand at US$41.6m (approximately $55.70m). The additional funding will support STATCOs business growth.
Operating out of the Xiamen Aviation Industry Zone at the Gaoqi International Airport since October 2011, STATCO is an 80:20 joint venture between STA Engines and Xiamen Aviation Industry Co Ltd (XAICO). STATCO provides MRO and total support services for CFM56-7B engines that power the Boeing 737 family of aircraft.
The capital injection is not expected to have any material impact on the consolidated net tangible assets per share and earnings per share of ST Engineering for the current financial year.

(RTTNews.com) - Bearings and transmission components maker Timken Co. ( TKR ) Monday announced plans to improve performance of its aerospace business, including closing its aerospace engine overhaul business in Arizona by the end of the year.
In the third quarter, the firm expects to record a non-cash, pre-tax charge, comprising mainly goodwill and inventory impairments, of $110 to $120 million, in addition to pre-tax costs of $10 million related to the facility closures.
The company's actions include closing of its aerospace bearing facility located in Wolverhampton, U.K., subject to employee consultation process, rationalizing the capacity into existing facilities.
Timken also plans to eliminate aerospace segment's leadership positions and intends to place the operations under the direction of group president Chris Coughlin. Further, the company said it will evaluate strategic alternatives for its aerospace MRO parts business.
The firm noted that starting with fourth quarter of 2014, it will not report Aerospace financial results separately. It plans to incorporate aerospace business results mainly within the company's Mobile Industries segment.
CEO Richard Kyle said aerospace will continue to be an important market for the company and that it "fits the Timken Business Model well."
"While the segment's overall performance has been weak, we expect that the actions we've outlined will improve returns and generate growth going forward," Kyle added.
In mid-June, Timken lifted its earnings outlook for full year 2014, citing expected second-half operating performance as well as gradually improving markets. The board also authorized an additional share buyback of up to 10 million shares.
It was in September 2013, that the company's board of directors approved a plan to split the company into two stand-alone publicly traded entities by separating the company's steel business from its bearings and power transmission business through a spin off. TimkenSteel Corp., trades under the symbol TMST on the New York Stock Exchange.
