What kind of new state could Scotland be?

This kind of national pride is hard work. You have to decide what are the things your nation should be proud of and how it is going to achieve them in reality. What does it mean to be a free country? No one is naive enough to believe that it means acquiring the capacity to do whatever you want. For governments, of big countries or small ones, room to manoeuvre is scarce. An independent Scotland would face the same limits on its freedom of action as it does now. The power of oligarchies and markets and inequalities to restrict democratic choice would not disappear. Freedom does not arrive just because you declare it. And if it ever does arrive, it is complicated, constrained and contested. Scots, coming late to the business of national independence, also come to it with few illusions. Too much has happened to too many dreams of national liberation for any sensible citizen to believe in a great moment of transformation after which everything will be simpler, purer, better.

But national freedom isnt meaningless either. Room to manoeuvre can be expanded. Democratic spaces can be opened up. The terms of the struggle between public and private interests can be renegotiated. Citizens can become more confident of their power to insist on decency and dignity. A place can be defined as a society and a culture as well as an economy. And the greater the constraints, the more naked the power of unaccountable elites, the more vital it is that whatever collective freedom remains is grasped.

Like everything else, though, even this qualified freedom has a price. Some of that price is literal the financial losses that have to be set against financial gains. But theres another kind of reckoning to be done, one that is more abstract but perhaps in the long term more important. National freedom isnt another word for nothing left to lose. Its another word for no one left to blame no one, that is, except yourself. If you make your own choices, you become responsible for their consequences.

This is, especially for small nations that have long been part of a larger imperial whole, a severe loss. Theres a deep and abiding satisfaction in imagining how wonderful you would be if only those foreign bastards would let you. Being free means having to live with the dawning realisation that you might not be so wonderful after all. Freedom in this sense is not an illusion its an act of deliberate disillusion.

What a free country quickly discovers is that the better Us of its imagination is not already there, fully formed, just waiting to blossom in the sun of liberation. It has to be created and in order to create it you have to genuinely decide you want it.

Letter: Heros examined

The left has an interesting set of heroes, including but not limited to Karl Marx, Friedrich Engels, John Maynard Keynes, Che Guevara and Margaret Sanger. A scant exploration of some of these individuals is quite revealing. Marx, for example, was a drunkard who was unable to care for his wife and children. Three of his six children died in infancy from starvation, and he failed to attend his wifes funeral. Fair enough only 12 people attended his. Keynes was a reprobate and pedophile.

However, perhaps the most notorious and evil figure embraced by the left is Margaret Sanger, the founder of Planned Parenthood. Successive presidents of the group have failed to denounce Sanger or her agenda, and many leftist politicians have embraced the legacy of Sanger proudly carries on the courageous tradition of Margaret Sanger. They are either ignorant of Sangers background, they choose to ignore it, or they embrace it.

At one time Sanger denounced marriage as a degenerate institution but seemed to reconcile with it later when she married a multi-millionaire. She opened a birth control clinic in Brownsville, N.Y., which had a large Slavic, Italian, Jewish and Latino population. Sanger said these groups were dysgenic and diseased races that needed to have their reckless breeding curbed.

In her publication, The Pivot of Civilization, she praised the cause of eugenics, openly calling for the eradication of human weeds, for the segregation of morons, misfits and the maladjusted, and for the forced sterilization of genetically inferior races.

Her association with the KKK has been well documented. How ironic that so many Planned Parenthood clinics are located in poor and minority neighborhoods. After all, they are merely walking down the path that Mrs. Sanger carved out for us.

No amount of whitewashing can change the history and foundation of Planned Parenthood. And dont forget your tax dollars help fund this spurious organization and its proud heritage. One would doubt that God would bless Planned Parenthood, regardless if it were the president of the United States uttering those words.

StartupWave for entrepreneurs in smaller cities

For entrepreneurs from smaller cities who complain of not getting access to mentors and angel funding, there is good news.

Indias first free-to-use virtual incubation platform StartupWave that was launched in April this year has been adopted by close to 190 entrepreneurs.

StartupWave is a virtual incubation platform that has been built as an infrastructure for the Indian start-up incubation eco-system, conceptualized by Intellecap in partnership with Government of UKs Department for International Development in India and GIZ on behalf of the German Ministry of Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ).

Ipshita Sinha - Manager, Intellecap; currently developing the StartupWave platform said that the platform was in the making since early 2013, but the thought process had started in 2012. We had conducted a survey in 2012 and found that the rejection rate of entrepreneurs was about 90 per cent and most of these came from tier II and III cities. We found that they do not get access to mentoring or access to funds and hence, felt that there was a need to fill in this gap, she added.

The 190 entreprenueurs that have joined belong to cities like Jaipur, Bhubaneshwar, Ahmedabad among others. Intellecap also found that incubation process or incubators at present were concentrated in metros and Tier I cities. Also lot of startups find it difficult to travel long distance to connect with mentors during scale up times.

StartupWave is a virtual incubation platform that has been built as an infrastructure for the Indian start-up incubation eco-system. This platform will give access to mentors online. Startups now just need to have internet connection. Of course they can always connect offline as well. Secondly, they can now access capacity building module online, said Sinha. As a collaborative platform, it aims to democratise incubation and is a one-stop service, providing a blend of virtual and in-person support to take start-up enterprises from idea to investment stage. This platform is designed in consultation with and is being used by incubators, corporates, funds and start-ups.

Stefanie Bauer, Project Manager, Private Sector Development at Deutsche Gesellschaft fr Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH, who is a founding partner of this initiative said, StartupWave has the potential to bring startup support providers on a common stage. We believe that we can help young entrepreneurs in a better way through collaboration in the eco-system and cooperation between incubators, investors, corporates and other support organisations.

StartupWave does not only make it easier for the entrepreneur to find the right support, it also helps incubators and investors to build a good pipeline for entrepreneurs.

This platform is designed in consultation with, and is being used by, incubators, corporates, funds and start-ups. Though at present the focus is pre-incubation wherein entrepreneurs can connect via the platform and fine-tune their business plan before they are connected to mentors, Intellecap also plans to extend this to investment ready stage. The platform has 20 mentors and a network of 25 partner incubators, five of which are from low income states such as Jharkhand, Rajasthan etc.

According to Intellecap, Indias yearly job creation requirement over the next decade is predicted to be 10-15 million per year, which can be addressed by boosting Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs). While there has been a steady growth of such enterprises, over 21 per cent of them failed in early years due to roadblocks to scale.

Visitors, Rescues Up This Year At LA County Beaches

LOS ANGELES (CBSLA.com) Attendance at Los Angeles County beaches this year hit a new high, along with the number of ocean rescues, county lifeguard officials said Friday.

Over the past 20 years, the average number of people who visit county beaches in a year has been about 54.8 million. But as of Monday, more than 61.4 million have hit the beach, according to the Los Angeles County Fire Departments Lifeguard Division.

That doesnt even include the number of people expected to escape to the beaches this weekend, when triple-digit temperatures are forecast for Southern California.

For one, the lack of rain and extended periods of unseasonably warm weather this year have brought an increase in beach attendance to L.A. County beaches, acting chief lifeguard Steve Moseley said. Secondly, the frequency of high surf has caused frequent beach erosion and rip currents along our beaches. This in turn has caused more ocean rescues.

According to the Lifeguard Division, there have been 11,666 ocean rescues already this year, above the average of 9.670 for an entire year. Lifeguards have also made 972 boat rescues, up from the annual average of 685.

Moseley said that the ocean water has been particularly warm, rarely falling below 60 degrees in the winter and averaging above 70 degrees in the summer.

All of these contributing factors have combined to create one of the busiest years in memory for the Lifeguard Division, he said.

Britain's beaches 'becoming more dangerous'

Cover on some beaches has already ended for the season, with daily RNLI patrols set to end on others on September 28.

Rescues made in past few days include a woman holidaymaker who got trapped on a ledge by the high spring tide opposite Towan Island, Newquay, Cornwall, and a 31-year-old man who was looking at ancient tin mines plunged 30ft from cliffs at Chapel Porth, also in Cornwall.

RNLI rescuers say he's lucky to have fallen on to sand rather than rocks, and they found him just in time - he was lying in a cave with a broken ankle as the tide flooded in..

At Polzeath, Cornwall, a regular destination of David Cameron, lifeguards recently had to rescue more than thirty people in just one day.

They are urging people to take extra care, because the unpredictable currents - a legacy of the winter storms - can carry people quickly out to sea.

Cornwall RNLI spokesman Steve Instance warned today "Local people and regular holidaymakers - your beach won't be the same as how you knew it.

"It's worth taking a bit of time to look around and to notice what the tide covers up.

"When you go and visit your beach at high tide you don't know what's beneath the surface of the water.

"We're seeing evidence on a number of beaches of more sand coming in - the storms we saw this winter were the worse we've seen in living memory.

"So the damage they caused will take a long, long time to repair and to return our beaches to how we knew them."

Experts say northern Lights may be visible tonight

Astronomy Ireland has said thatthere is a strong chance people in Ireland will catch a rare glimpse of the Northern Lights tonight.

The spectacular display of multi-coloured solar waves were expected to light up the dark sky yesterday but dense cloud led to poor visibility.

Astronomy Ireland's David Mooresays there's a 90% chance people will tonight see the aurora.

He said: "If we get a great display of the aurora, the whole entire country will see it."

Mr Moore said: " If it's a weak display out over the North Atlantic then northern counties are favoured. But those weak displays wouldn't be that spectacular."

He said that: "the next few years are great for aurora because we're just after sun-spot maximum and that's when the aurora peaks for several years after that."

Alcoa Signs Multiyear Supply Contract With Boeing Valued At More Than $1B

NEW YORK & DAVENPORT, IOWA--(BUSINESS WIRE)--

Leading aerospace manufacturer Alcoa (NYSE:AA) has signed a long-term contract to supply aluminum sheet and plate products to Boeing, the worlds largest aerospace company and leading manufacturer of commercial jetliners and defense, space and security systems. The multiyear contract, valued at more than $1 billion, is the largest ever between the two companies.

Alcoa signs the largest-ever contract with Boeing to supply aluminum sheet and plate products. The multiyear, more than $1 billion contract, makes Alcoa sole supplier to Boeing for wing skins on its metallic structure aircraft. Alcoa plate products, such as wing ribs and skins, will also be on every Boeing platform. The Boeing next-generation 737, shown here, is one of the world's most successful commercial airliners and features Alcoa aluminum. (Photo: Business Wire)

This historic agreement not only continues the 35-year Alcoa-Boeing partnership, it will take our collaboration on next-generation metallic technologies even further, said Klaus Kleinfeld, Alcoa Chairman and Chief Executive Officer. We are proud that Alcoa's lightweight structural solutions will continue to fly on Boeings most advanced aircraft today, and that our metallic science leadership will contribute to the Boeing aircraft of tomorrow.

Notably, the agreement makes Alcoa sole supplier to Boeing for wing skins on all of its metallic structure airplanes. Alcoa plate products, used in applications such as wing ribs, wing skins or other structural parts of the aircraft, will also be on every Boeing platform, including the 787 Dreamliner.

Finally, the agreement establishes a foundation for continued collaboration on new, high-strength and corrosion-resistant alloys, including aluminum-lithium that could be used for complex structural applications.

Alcoas aerospace business, which had revenues totaling $4 billion in 2013, holds leading market positions in aerospace sheet and plate produced by its midstream business, Global Rolled Products (GRP) and in aerospace forgings, extrusions, jet engine airfoils and fastening systems produced by its downstream business, Engineered Products and Solutions (EPS).

Additionally, Alcoa announced in the second quarter that it had signed a definitive agreement to acquire Firth Rixson, a global leader in aerospace jet engine components. The acquisition will further strengthen Alcoas robust aerospace portfolio, positioning the Company to capture additional aerospace growth with a broader range of multi-material, value-add jet engine components.

About Alcoa A global leader in lightweight metals technology, engineering and manufacturing, Alcoa innovates multi-material solutions that advance our world. Our technologies enhance transportation, from automotive and commercial transport to air and space travel, and improve industrial and consumer electronics products. We enable smart buildings, sustainable food and beverage packaging, high-performance defense vehicles across air, land and sea, deeper oil and gas drilling and more efficient power generation. We pioneered the aluminum industry over 125 years ago, and today, our 60,000 people in 30 countries deliver value-add products made oftitanium, nickel and aluminum, and produce best-in-class bauxite, alumina and primary aluminum products.
