MIT Students Battle States Demand for Their Bitcoin Miners Source Code

Four MIT students behind an award-winning Bitcoin mining tool will face off against New Jersey state authorities in court today when they attempt to fight back against a subpoena demanding their source code.

The Electronic Frontier Foundation is representing 19-year-old MIT student Jeremy Rubin and three classmates in a remarkable case that stands out for the measure of aggression the state is using to obtain the code and identify anyone who might have tested the mining tool.

The case is reminiscent of a federal one that targeted Aaron Swartz after he was arrested by MIT police in 2011 for downloading more than 4 million scholarly journal articles from the JSTOR digital library, offered to MIT students, to make them more widely available. Swartz faced multiple charges for his activity and killed himself as he was preparing for trial. Although there is currently no indictment or pending criminal charges against Rubin and his friends, state authorities have indicated that they believe the researchers may have violated state laws. The case marks a disturbing trend among authorities to go after researchers, innovators, tinkerers and others who try to do cutting-edge projects to help the tech community, says EFF staff attorney Hanni Fakhoury.

Its a very broad subpoena that hints at criminal liability and civil liability, he says. For a bunch of college kids who put something together for a hackathonthey didnt make any money, the project never got off the ground and now is completely disbandedthere are some very serious implications.

The mining tool, known as Tidbit, was developed in late 2013 by Rubin and his classmates for the Node Knockout hackathononly Rubin is identified on the subpoena but his three classmates are identified on the hackathon web site as Oliver Song, Kevin King and Carolyn Zhang. The now defunct tool was designed to offer web site visitors an alternative way to support the sites they visited by using their computers to mine Bitcoins for them in exchange for having online ads removed.

We believe our utility for the end user comes in freeing up real estate on web pages, King wrote about their program on the Node Knockout site. Imagine a web where your amazon shopping cart doesnt follow you around to every website you visit. We believe there should be more options than advertising for monetizing a website, and we believe we have a novel and non-intrusive solution. In this way, we provide utility to developers who can now include higher quality content on their websites, and utility to end users who are spared the wasted time in looking at ads.

The clever design won the award for innovation in the programming competition.

This is a very intriguing idea that could really transform online economics if it works, one supporter wrote on the hackathon site. There is a much broader discussion to have about mining bitcoins vs doing other useful tasks (e.g. a friendly form of mechanical turk).

But the program never got beyond the proof-of-concept stage before Rubin and Tidbit, as an entity, were hit with subpoenas from the New Jersey

The states attorney general claims Rubin and his classmates violated New Jersey computer crime laws and demanded they hand over source code for their creation and any documentation related to the tool. Rubin was the only one named in the subpoena, Fakhoury says, because he registered the web site for Tidbit.

Bitcoin trades near 5-month low as regulation concerns weigh

Investing.com - Bitcoin prices traded near the lowest level since April on Monday, amid concerns about possible regulation of the virtual currency.

Bitcoin (BTC/USD) tacked on $4.23, or 1.06%, on Slovenia-based BitStamp to trade at $404.23 during U.S. morning hours. BitStamp prices fell to $379.50 on September 19, a level not seen since early April.

Bitcoin prices were likely to find support at $379.50, the low from September 19, and resistance at $452.99, the high from September 18.

The price of a bitcoin on Bulgaria-based BTC-e added $5.50, or 1.43%, to trade at $388.71, while prices on Singapore-based itBit advanced $2.08, or 0.52%, to trade at $402.18.

According to the CoinDesk Bitcoin Price Index, which averages prices from the major exchanges, prices of the crypto-currency inched up 1.04% to trade at $400.68.

Market players remain concerned about possible regulation of the virtual currency among other adverse events in the industry.

New York's Department of Financial Services proposed a BitLicense on July 17. As per the proposal, firms would have to obtain a license to engage in the virtual currency business.

Some market analysts have expressed concerns over the proposal, saying increased regulation would pressurize the Bitcoin industry.

Meanwhile, euro-denominated Bitcoin prices (BTC/EUR) rose 3.59, or 1.15%, to trade at 316.00 on U.S.-based Kraken Exchange.

Cross Country: Comets pack better than rest

WALNUT - At 176 boys, Saturdays Bureau Valley Invitational saw the largest pool of runners that Newman had competed against this season.

In such a case, sticking together helps one find another. Naturally for the Comets, they are well aware of what sticking together can do on the cross country course.

The Comets won the championship for the second time in the meets history. Putting together 56 points, the Comets had four runners in the top 15, led by Bryson Reyess fourth-place finish in 16 minutes, 32 seconds.

When Reyes turned around after coming to a stop for a breather at the end of the finish ropes, he caught a sight of familiar blue and white. Quincy Coomes finished in eighth with a time of 17:04, followed by Chris Ahlers in 10th (17:07) and Drew Rosengren in 14th (17:13). Ethan Nash was the Comets fifth runner, crossing in 28th place (18:00).

We had such a strong pack behind us, Reyes said. Our two-through-five were right there. I was real pleased to see that whenever I rounded a turn.

Newmans pack time of its top five runners of 1:28 was second to Rockford Christian (0:53), who placed sixth. The Royal Lions sat most of their top runners out for the meet, leaving Newman coach Pat Warkins a little disappointed that his team didnt get the chance to compete with top-ranked team in the Class 1A Oregon Sectional (according to Dyestat.com).

The boys responded the way I thought they could, Warkins said. It was nice to see four of them as high up as they were, and our fifth guy [Nash] moved up farther than normal, so that helped a lot.

Reyes was the closest runner to Aurora Christians Tanner Chada and Rock Fallss Seth Williams for most of the race until being overtaken by Al Baldonado of Hall. Chada and Williams were only a few feet apart from one another for all but the final -mile, but Chada kept his lead the entire way and spread it out as the two made their way down a hill close to the finish line.

Williams, who finished eighth last year, bested that time by 18 seconds, finishing 2 seconds behind Chada with a time of 16:11. However, he traversed the course without his running partner Brayden Hamblen, who sat out the meet.

It was a little intimidating, because last year I beat him, Williams said of Chada. I was thinking that I was going to ride on him until that last half-mile and just beat him. I was hurting pretty bad coming around down the finish area, and I just couldnt do it today.

Workingtons No1 was forced to withdraw from the Premier League Riders Championship at Sheffields Owlerton Stadium last night after colliding with eventual winner Simon Stead in heat 16.

News of his injury will come as a major blow to Workingtons play-off hopes. Comets are due to travel to league leaders Edinburgh Monarchs on Friday and they then host the Scottish club the following day at Derwent Park. But they may have to do without their No1 rider. However, team manager Tony Jackson is hoping that Kyle Howarth, who incurred facial and back injuries last week, will be fit this weekend.

However, west Cumbrians and ex-Comet riders Richard Lawson and Craig Cook enjoyed better luck at the play-offs.

Both went up against one another in the semi-final after Lawson, from Maryport, scored 11 points and Cook, of Cleator Moor, amassed 10 points in the qualifying heats.

Lawson who progressed to the final while Cook retired.

Lawson went up against Ostergaard, Danny King and Simon Stead in the grand final.

And it was Stead who lifted the trophy, with Lawson finishing fourth.

There should be no general ban on travel or trade with countries reeling from the Ebola epidemic in West Africa, independent health advisers to the World Health Organisation (WHO) have assessed.

Some airlines have stopped flights to affected areas and WHOand other agencies have said on Monday that this has hampered aid efforts andthe ability of experts to reach victims of the world's worstever outbreak of the hemorrhagic fever.

In a statement issued bythe UN agency,after the Emergency Committee held itssecond meeting last week, the WHO said Ebola had now killed atleast 2,793 people in five countries and remains a "publichealth emergency of international concern".

"Flight cancellations and other travel restrictions continueto isolate affected countries, resulting in detrimental economicconsequences, and hinder relief and response efforts riskingfurther international spread," the statement said.

"The Committee strongly reiterated that there should be nogeneral ban on international travel or trade..."

The experts urged authorities in the affected countries -Guinea, Liberia, Nigeria, Senegal and Sierra Leone - to workwith the aviation and maritime sectors to resolve differencesand "develop a coordinated response" to transport issues.

Quarantines still necessary

Quarantines may be deemed necessary in areas of intense andwidespread transmission of the deadly Ebola virus, the committeestatement went on.

"States should ensure that they are proportionate andevidence-based and that accurate information, essential services and commodities, including food and water, are provided to theaffected populations."

WHO advisers earlier recommended the screening of travellersdeparting Ebola-affected countries from airports and ports.

The University of Queensland is one step closer to developing better mobile phone battery life, understanding the engineering of vaccines and creating stem cell therapies for Parkinsons disease.

The Universitys Australian Institute for Bioengineering and Nanotechnology (AIBN) has bought a $275,000 high performance parallel computer cluster that will support research stretching from the development of advanced materials for clean fuel, through to the engineering of new vaccines to develop anti-cancer drugs.

Centre for Theoretical and Computational Molecular Science Director Professor Debra Bernhardt said the new computer would focus on computational speed.

The facility will be more efficient, providing more processing power and working over a fast network, which will enable researchers to work with more realistic models, Professor Bernhardt said.

The computer has a new type of co-processor, providing faster and more energy efficient performance.

Another advantage is that it works with traditional programming languages, making it easily accessible to researchers.

The computational power is well beyond the current capabilities of a traditional PC.

AIBN researcher Dr Marlies Hankel said she would use the computer to model materials in lithium ion batteries.

We hope to understand the mechanisms of charging and recharging batteries used in mobile phones and laptops, and aid the design of safer batteries and with longer life times, Dr Hankel said.

A UQ Major Equipment and Infrastructure grant and a National Health and Medical Research Council Equipment Grant totalling $275,572 funded the super computer.
