New Programs for Third-Year Medical Students Offered at Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai

New York, NY (PRWEB) September 29, 2014

The Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai (ISMMS) is teaming with McKinsey & Company on two new academic initiatives that will offer students a first-class medical education combined with a comprehensive apprenticeship in the business of healthcare.

The first initiative is an MD/Management Consulting program. Many third-year medical students choose to take a scholarly leave of absence to pursue other academic interests before completing their medical studies. Now, if accepted by both institutions, third-year ISMMS students will have the opportunity to enroll in McKinseys two-year Fellowship in Health Care Consulting before returning for their fourth and final year of medical school. MD Fellows will serve on client project teams alongside traditional consultants, gaining broad exposure to health care businesses and business problems, and will be offered extensive professional development opportunities.

The second initiative allows undergraduates who have completed two years at McKinsey and who have an outstanding academic record to apply to ISMMS without the traditional science qualifications or sitting the Medical College Admissions Test (MCAT). The initiative builds on the success of our FlexMed program, which encourages talented undergraduates from any discipline to study at ISMMS.

These programs will help equip students with the skills and experience relevant to a wide range of leadership roles in academic medicine or clinical care, in the operations or administration of clinical enterprises, or in health care policy, said Dennis S. Charney, MD, Anne and Joel Ehrenkranz Dean of the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai and President for Academic Affairs, Mount Sinai Health System. We are proud to join McKinsey in helping cultivate the next generation of health care innovators.

Panel explores impact of proposed UNLV medical school

By Brian Nordli (contact)

Monday, Sept. 29, 2014 | 9:22 a.m.

A month ago, the Nevada System of Higher Education requested $26.7 million from the Nevada Legislature to start a medical school at UNLV.

Now its up to Gov. Brian Sandoval and elected officials to determine if the state needs a second medical school.

During a Lincy Institute Forum today on the impact of the proposed medical school, Brookings Institute fellow John Hudak said the need exists.

Hudak joined medical school Planning Dean Barbara Atkinson, Tripp Umbach research firm President Paul Umbach and University of Central Florida Medical School founding Dean Deborah German.

The forum detailed research highlighting a significant economic impact a medical school at UNLV could have on Nevada.

Nevada ranks 46th among the states in the number of medical residents per 100,000 people and ranks last or near last in nearly every category of doctors per capita, from those in family practice to pediatricians, OB/GYNs and psychiatrists.

Las Vegas is also the largest major city without a medical school and is far from any other citys school. The closest one is in Loma Linda, Calif., which is 200 miles away, while the University of Nevada School of Medicine is 400 miles away.

A program in Southern Nevada would boost the states economy through research grants and attracting new businesses, Hudak said.

San Diego plans to open $3-million public market at Liberty Station

San Diego is out to create a $3-million destination food hall -- like San Francisco's Ferry Building or Napa's Oxbow Public Market -- at Liberty Station in the city's Point Loma neighborhood.

Travelers and locals will be able to sample artisanal breads and homemade tortillas, craft cocktails and fine wines, fresh produce from a daily farmers market and seafood at what will be called Liberty Public Market, an announcement from co-creator Blue Bridge Hospitality of San Diego says.

The market is set to open June 2015 at the former naval base, which is now a commercial and residential development.

Like other big-city markets, the accent is on locally sourced food and goods. More than 30 small businesses will be housed in a 22,000-square-foot warehouse that was once a 1920s-era commissary at the naval training center. It also will include a large outdoor patio and eating area.

"The storied space ... will pay homage to its historic roots by housing a diverse mix of merchants, each hand-selected for their passionate support and ardent commitment to San Diego's culture," the announcement says.

The building at 2816 Historic Decatur Rd. is adjacent to the popular Stone Brewing World Bistro & Gardens.

David Spatafore of Blue Bridge, who created a string of restaurants such as MooTime Creamery and Leroy's Kitchen + Lounge in nearby Coronado, partnered with Liberty Station developers in coming up with the market plan.

"Liberty Public Market presents small businesses the chance to sell their goods on a much larger scale," Spatafore says in a statement about the market.

Will it become a tourist hit? That's the hope, but it's just too early to say.

New Liberty softball coach Carrodo needed to get the blessing of Rich Giering

Sam Carrodo said that when the softball season ended last spring he had every intention of retiring from coaching.

Then through some unexpected developments, the Liberty High position opened up and Carrodo saw an opportunity to stay in the game he has long loved.

But before he applied, he had to check with someone first.

"I needed to check with Rich Giering," Carrodo said of the former Hurricanes coach. "Rich is like a brother to me and if he didn't give me his blessing, I'd never have applied for the job. Rich said it was OK with him."

Giering, who was 97-44 over six seasons, had a rather unfortunate situation at the end of last season cause his departure at Liberty. He has already joined the Easton staff.

Carrodo had been on Giering's Liberty staff for four seasons after having tremendous success at Northampton Community College.

"Besides Rich, I also had to check with my family because I spent so much time away from them when I was at NCC," Carrodo said. "You can't get that time back, but the family gave me the OK, so I went for it. I am glad it all worked out."

Carrodo has four children, three grandchildren and another grandchild on the way. Two of his kids are twins 18-year-old Nicholas and Devan who are seniors at Liberty.

He will surround himself with even more Liberty people in his new role, with former Hurricanes Katie Snyder, Michelle Panik, Crystal (Epright) Aungst and Mandy (Sterner) Hinkle joining his staff.

Maria DeBonis, Katie Buskirk and Laura Frederick will continue on the Liberty staff.

CNN Poll: In North Carolina Senate race, Libertarian could be spoiler

STORY HIGHLIGHTS

(CNN) -- In one of the most closely-watched Senate races of the year, incumbent Democratic Sen. Kay Hagan of North Carolina holds a narrow three-point advantage over her Republican challenger, according to a new CNN/ORC International survey.

But the poll indicates that Thom Tillis, the GOP nominee, may be falling behind Hagan because a Libertarian candidate could be siphoning off Republican votes.

Hagan edges Tillis, 46%-43%, while Libertarian Sean Haugh has support from 7% likely voters, according to the poll.

The three-point gap between Tillis and Hagan, however, is well within the poll's sampling error of plus or minus four percentage points among likely voters, meaning the candidates are about even.

The race is one of eight Senate contests that CNN rates as "up for grabs" this fall. As Republicans seek to retake the Senate majority, they consider North Carolina one of their best chances to pick up a Democratic seat.

Politics of fear -- how the GOP is using ISIS against Dems

Since Hagan was first elected in 2008, North Carolina has transitioned from somewhat of a purple state to solid red territory. Republicans took the governorship and seized both houses in the state Legislature, and North Carolina was one of two states that voted for Barack Obama in 2008 but Mitt Romney in 2012.

Hagan's favorable rating is 46%, indicating that everyone who likes her is going to vote for her. But Tillis gets a 47% favorable rating among likely voters, yet only 43% of the vote.

"That suggests that there are voters who would probably choose Tillis in a two-way race but aren't going to vote for him in a three-way contest," said CNN Polling Director Keating Holland.
