Tony Abbott says he doesn't support banning the burqa, but admits he finds it "confronting" and wishes people wouldn't wear it.
Does Australia stand for the freedom of women? Or for their oppression? As the country confronts the barbarians of the so-called Islamic State, the answer from the national leader should be strong and clear.
The Prime Minister had an ideal opportunity to demonstrate leadership today with a powerful affirmation of the freedom of women.

But, asked whether he thought that women should be banned from wearing burqas, Tony Abbott hedged. He missed the opportunity.

He reverted to the same position he held as head of the opposition, a tribal leader and not a national one.
"I have said before that I find it a fairly confronting form of attire," Abbott told a press conference today.

Present-day lithium batteries are efficient but involve a range of resource and environmental problems. Using materials from alfalfa (lucerne seed) and pine resin and a clever recycling strategy, Uppsala researchers have now come up with a highly interesting alternative. Their study will be presented soon in the scientific journal ChemSusChem.
We think our discovery can open several doors to more environment-friendly, energy-efficient solutions for the batteries of the future, says Daniel Brandell, Senior Lecturer at the Department of Chemistry, Uppsala University, one of the researchers behind the idea.
Lithium-ion batteries are, thanks to their high energy content, highly promising for various products not least, electric vehicles or large-scale energy storage in the electricity grid in the future energy system. But present-day lithium batteries entail a number of resource-related and environmental problems. For a start, the worlds commercially extractable lithium resources are limited and whether they can meet future needs is unclear. Moreover, it is very difficult to recover lithium from the inorganic materials used to make modern batteries. What is more, lithium batteries contain other, even rarer materials that are hard to replace and require large energy inputs and toxic chemicals for the recovery process.
In their latest study, researchers at Uppsala Universitys ngstrm Laboratory have developed a whole new battery concept. The battery is based on recovery and renewable biological material with an energy content corresponding to that of current lithium-ion batteries. Components of the battery are made of renewable organic biomaterials from alfalfa and pine resin, and can be recycled with a low energy input and non-hazardous chemicals, such as ethanol and water.
Although present-day batteries contain non-renewable inorganic materials, this is not the first time batteries composed of renewable materials have been presented. But the recycling and recovery strategy is a wholly new concept. Constructing a new battery from a spent one is also feasible. In other words, a straightforward process enables it to be reused.
The scientists have shown that the lithium extracted from a spent battery can be used for a new battery: all that needs to be added is more biomaterial. Their battery proved capable of delivering as much as 99% of the energy output from the first. With future modifications, this figure can very probably become even higher, say the researchers.
Daniel Brandell adds: The use of organic materials from renewable sources makes it possible to solve several of the problems that would arise from a huge rise in the use of lithium batteries. But above all, its a major step forward that, to a high degree and in a simple, environment-friendly way, the lithium from these batteries can be recovered. These solutions are also potentially very cost-effective.

I dont obsess over the newest phones or tablets. What fascinates me is how technology shapes our human experience by triggering powerful emotions, guiding our cognitive processes and filtering our perceptions of the world. Why do some humanoid robots or animated film characters creep people out? Why have U.S. soldiers risked their lives to save stranded battlefield robots under enemy fire? Why do virtual reality headsets such as Oculus Rift feel like a magical wonderland to some people and make other people physically ill?
This blog is about finding those stories of how humans experience technology. I plan to look at issues such as the love/hate relationship we have with robots, why Disney-Pixars latest animated characters won (or lost) audiences at the movie theater, how people form relationships within online games, and the experience of using a prosthetic arm or leg. For instance, I may examine the digital resurrection of a fallen Hollywood actor or the fan idolization of a virtual pop star in Japan. At other times, I could consider how drones have shaped the experience of war for both soldiers and civilians, or whether drivers are willing to trust a new generation of self-driving robot cars from Google and other companies.
Part of my vision for this blog comes from having spent my college years studying the history and sociology of science an academic field that tries to understand science in the context of its people, institutions and broader society. But Im also leveraging almost seven years of experience as a science and technology journalist who has written for publications such as Scientific American, Popular Science, IEEE Spectrum, SPACE.com and LiveScience.
I hope the blog name Lovesick Cyborg gives some sense of what to expect here. I tend to prefer the looser definition of the word cyborg that describes anyone who interacts with even the simplest technologies, meaning all of us. But the word cyborg also evokes a science fiction vision of the future where humans and technology have forged an even closer relationship than before within the same body. That may either excite or scare you, but either way Ill try to give a heads up so that nobody is left surprised.
As for lovesick, I really wanted a word that could remind us of how technology can affect both our minds and bodies. But were already seeing how some people really cant bear to be parted with their smartphones and tablets for even a day.
If these kinds of issues tickle your cyborg brain, welcome aboard! Im looking forward to bringing you much more to come in the near future.

Astronomy celebs come out at Starry Nights By Leslie Shaw Hi-Desert Star Hi-Desert Star |
YUCCA MESA World-famous astronomy experts spoke at the 18th annual Starry Nights Festival Saturday at the Yucca Mesa Improvement Associations community center.
Astronomer and author David Levy offered copies of his new book, a biography about Bart Bok entitled The Man Who Sold the Milky Way. A familiar face to regular Starry Nights participants, Levy is the sole discoverer of two comets and the co-discoverer of seven more comets.
Tim Hunter, a co-founder of the International Dark-Sky Association joined amateur astronomer Mary Firth and Los Angeles City College professors Dean Ardvidson and Paul McCudden to give a star tour in the evening.
Tom OKey, a member of the Southern California Desert Video Astronomers, set up his solar telescope so daytime visitors could see the sun and its spots.
Visitors to Yucca Mesa got to see the night sky through telescopes and a large projection screen thanks to members of the Southern California Desert Video Astronomers. The group also provided experts for a telescope workshop where visitors could be trained in the use of their own telescopes.
Danny and Gina Esheverria, from the restaurant Proud Spirit No Borders in Banning, sold food including fried bread tacos.

With a title as audacious as The Meaning of Human Existence, even a casual reader couldnt be faulted for expecting a veritable Rosetta Stone to the cosmos and life as we know it. But in his latest book, Edward O. Wilson offers no philosophically-satisfying answers to this age-old existence question. And maybe thats his point.
After all, the ability to ponder our own existence is all at once a blessing and a curse. Neither sharks nor swallows seem to worry about too much more than their next meal. Yet in fifteen chapters, Wilson a renowned biologist, naturalist, author and Harvard University professor emeritus, strips humanity of its soul.
Wilson is steadfastly averse to spiritual intangibles; somewhat skeptical about ever fully understanding consciousness, yet overly sanguine about cosmologys progress in understanding the nature of the universe. He also spends a significant portion of the book trashing organized religion in ways that in this atheistic age at least seem both arbitrary and predictable.
Instead, Wilson advocates a larger role for a reciprocal meeting of the minds between the humanities and science itself.
Courtesy W.W. Norton
The time has come to consider what science might give to the humanities and the humanities to science in a common search to the great riddle of our existence, writes Wilson.
In some ways he may have a point lifes intangibles bubble to the surface whenever I see a well-acted scene from Chekhovs The Cherry Orchard or hear a well-played steel guitar.
And to his credit, Wilson offers the kind of grand sweeping essays that we usually get piecemeal in books typically written by theoretical physicists pondering the imponderables.
We were created not by a supernatural intelligence but by chance and necessity as one species out of millions of species in earths biosphere, Wilson argues. Humanity arose as an accident of evolution, a product of random mutation and natural selection.
But except for those who view evolution along the narrowest terms, do chance and necessity and supernatural intelligence have to be mutually exclusive?
