Changes in MCAT reflect new practices

April 2015, the Medical College Admissions Test (MCAT) will nearly double its already three-and-a half-hour length.

Updated to reflect changing practices and new developments in medicine, the MCAT will now test students on social sciences such as psychology and sociology. Students will also be tested on biochemistry, in addition to biology, organic chemistry, physics and critical thinking skills.

Owen Farcy is the developer of Pre-Med Partnerships at Kaplan Test Prep, which provides preparatory classes for students studying for the MCAT exam. Farcy said that not only the content of the test changed, but so has the format of it.

Its a very different test. The Association of American Medical Colleges [AAMC] discussed while launching these changes that there are a variety of factors contributing to them, Farcy said. The field of medicine has shifted significantly since 20 years ago. Thats where the social sciences come in.

The current MCAT test is composed of 144 questions to be answered over the course of three hours and 20 minutes. On the new test, students will have 230 questions to answer over the course of six hours and 15 minutes. Additional types of questions related to research design and graphical analysis will likely appear on the test as well.

Loyola sophomore Ben Crofoot said he sees the changes as positive, as they will not only examine the science skills of hopeful medical students, but also their social skills.

The changes are expected to include segments that will gauge aspiring doctors skills in interacting with others, said Crofoot, who plans to take the test in the future.

I plan to start studying some time next semester by using review books and practice tests, said the 19-year-old biochemistry major.

For pre-medical students, there is perhaps nothing more daunting than the Medical College Admission Test (MCAT), the standardized test required of all medical school applicants. Starting in April 2015, the MCAT is going to look a lot different.

The current MCAT exam has been administered since 1991. It features four sections that measure a students competency in biological sciences, physical sciences, verbal reasoning and writing. The new test, titled MCAT2015, which will be administered starting next April, has not only updated these sections, but added a few additional subjects as wellmost notably biochemistry, psychology and sociology.

In addition to the added subject matter, the MCAT2015 will measure not just a students knowledge in a particular subject area, but their ability to reason scientifically and apply that knowledge. As the Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC) states on their website, the exam accomplishes this by requiring the application of scientific reasoning skills to solve problems in the natural, social and behavioral sciences test sections.

As a result of this added material, the length of the test has increased, and the MCAT2015 is, according to the AAMC , expected to take about 7.5 hours including breaks.

While it is not unusual for standardized tests to make changes, especially in fields such as medicine, where information and knowledge is always evolving, this particular update to the MCAT illustrates an interesting trend in the medical school admissions process.

The MCAT2015, with the addition of the Psychological, Social and Biological Foundations of Behavior section, recognizes the necessity of having a holistic approach to medicine. As part of that holistic approach, medical schools want applicants to have not only scientific knowledge, but experience working with people. While the new section gets at those skills, Dr. Barbara Keyes, director of Albion Colleges Institute for Healthcare Professions emphasized the importance of developing those interpersonal skills firsthand.

The other thing that has changed in the past decade is an increasing focus on what is called holistic review, Keyes said. So, academic competencies are essential, but then schools are looking at what they call personal and interpersonal competencies communication skills, cultural competence [and] a whole slew of personal characteristics they want to see in future physicians.

These personal and interpersonal competencies can be found on the AAMCs website,and include things like service orientation, resilience and adaptability, and cultural competency. In fact, of the 15 overall competencies the AAMC lists, only six of them are related to specific subjects one can learn in school. The remaining nine are arguably traits that cannot simply be learned from a textbook.

Despite all these changes to the exam, Marikay Dobbins, Albion College Health Professions adviser, believes that Albion College students will be well equipped to handle the added subject matter, as they are used to an extensive, liberal arts approach.

Dillards shares more details about Liberty Center store

The Dillards department store for the mega retail complex Liberty Center will feature the latest designs and technology by the Arkansas retailer, according to the company.

When the Dillards store was announced in spring 2013 as Liberty Centers first anchor tenant, it was described by developers as a flagship store.

Dillards submitted last month plans for construction. The two-story, 200,000-square-foot store is comparable in size to the companys other stores, said the retailers spokeswoman Julie Johnson Bull. It will feature large womens and mens apparel sections, as well as revamped displays for womens shoes and handbags, Bull said.

Merchandise will bear brand names such as Michael Kors, Coach, Vera Bradley, Ralph Lauren and others.

Updated LED lighting fixtures will be energy efficient.

It certainly will be a destination for the shoppers, she said.

Other store sections include childrens and home goods. The customer who knows us and loves us in Cincinnati, shes going to appreciate the same great merchandise and service, but shes going to have it in a beautiful new facility, Bull said.

This will feature the best we have to offer in merchandise selection, she said.

A portion of the second floor, less than half, will be unused when Dillards opens with the rest of Liberty Center in fall 2015, according to a zoning application to the township.

Libertarian candidate Fellows seeks U.S. House seat

Mike Fellows said hes running for the U.S. House for three reasons: to try to balance the federal budget, reduce the federal debt and protect Second Amendment gun rights.

The perennial Libertarian candidate from Missoula faces Democrat John Lewis and Republican Ryan Zinke in the Nov. 4 general election.

If you want smaller government, lower taxes and more liberty, were the only candidate in the race, Fellows said. Were the only fiscal conservative thats out there. Lewis is the liberal. Zinke has already said hes a moderate, and then youve got myself, whos a fiscal conservative.

Fellows, who said hes around 55, is self-employed in video preparations and odds and ends.

Hes coming off his best showing in a statewide race in 2012, polling 43 percent in a losing race against longtime Supreme Court Clerk Ed Smith, a Democrat. No Republican ran.

To balance the federal budget, Fellows called for elimination of the U.S. departments of education, commerce and energy.

He said the U.S. Education Department should just send its budget to the states, which would trigger innovation in education, halt its top-down, one-size-fits-all approach and eliminate the jobs of the federal agencys current employees.

It would be nice to scrap the tax code as well, but you and I know that is not going to happen, the Libertarian said. We need to reduce the rate of corporate and individual taxes.

As for the $17.7 trillion federal debt, Fellows said, We just have to control spending. Thats the only way were going to do it. We cant spend more than we take in.

Fellows said the country is slowly becoming more Libertarian, with candidates actually talking about reducing spending and getting our debts under control.

If the contest between Sen. Kay Hagan and Republican state House Speaker Thom Tillis remains narrowly divided in the final weeks of the race, political strategists believe Haugh could siphon votes away from Tillis and help hand the incumbent Democrat a victory. Democrats believe North Carolina is increasingly becoming their best firewall to stop Republicans from picking up the six seats needed to win control of the Senate.

If its really close -- people might say even at two percent -- Haugh would be playing a role in the outcome, said North Carolina State University political scientist Andrew Taylor.

Haugh, 53, is no stranger to state politics. He ran for Senate as a Libertarian in 2002, and has also worked with the states Libertarian Party in various capacities. He said he entered the race in February as an act of conscience.

There wasnt any Libertarian stepping up, he said.

His platform, laid out in a series of low-fi YouTube videos filmed at the home bar in his campaign managers basement, calls for peace and fiscal security, and an alternative to candidates owned by outside corporate interests.
