JONESBORO, Ark. (10/2/14) The Arkansas State University cross country teams will remain instate for competition this Saturday (Oct. 4) morning as the Red Wolves participate in the 26Annual Chile Pepper Cross Country Festivalmeet at Agri Park in Fayetteville, Ark.
The meet, which is hosted by the Chile Pepper Running Club, gets underway at 9:45 a.m. (CT) with the men's 8K race and is to be proceeded by the women's 5K run at 10:20 a.m. (CT) on the University of Arkansas' Agri Park course. Following the conclusion of both collegiate races, an awards ceremony will be held beginning at 11:10 a.m. (CT).
We are excited to run at the Chile Pepper XC Festival this year, said A-State Cross Country Head Coach Kyle Chandler. Not only do the meet organizers do a great job in putting on a fantastic event, but this course also will serve as the South Central Regional course we race on in November. Typically the races distances have been 6K (3.7 miles) for the women and 10K (6.2 miles) for the men in previous Chile Pepper events, but this year it will be a 5K (3.1 mile) and 8K (5 mile) for the men so it should be interesting to see how we do.
The Chile Pepper Festival meet will feature over 80 schools, including 11 regionally-ranked women's teams and 10 men's regionally-ranked teams not to mention a handful of Sun Belt Conference (SBC) member institutions.
A-State is returning to the Chile Pepper Festival meet following a year's absence. In the 2012 event (10/13), the Red Wolves finished 15th place (422 points) in the women's 6K race and placed 26th (758 points) in the men's 10K run.
This past weekend (Sept. 27), the Red Wolves finished second in women's competition at the 22nd Annual Rhodes College Invitational in Memphis, Tenn., and the men's team produced a fifth-place performance. A-State has been led this season by senior Rexi Parcells, junior Abbey Dixon, and senior Tilda Helgesson on the women's side while juniors Wil Norris, Lance Beckman, and Jesse Duvall have been the top men's runners to date for the Red Wolves, who are coached by Jim Patchell and Kyle Chandler.
The A-State women's team enters this Saturday's meet currently 10th place in the most recent (Sept. 29) U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) NCAA Division I South Central Region Rankings.
The information on the Arkansas State cross country teams is available via Twitter and/or by visiting the Red Wolves' official athletics website at AStateRedWolves.com.

Even with news the Hong Kong government will hold talks with those occupying the citys streets, protesters will likely not succeed in their two stated goals: the resignation of Hong Kong chief executive C.Y. Leung, and rules guaranteeing honest elections for future chief executives, starting in 2017.
What the students have achieved, however, is something far more alarming for any regime lacking the security of political legitimacy: Theyve made their leaders look ridiculous.
Granted, China has brought this all upon itself. Notwithstanding the many symbols of a modernizing China gleaming skyscrapers, state-of-the-art infrastructure, a record IPO on the New York Stock Exchange whenever Beijing finds itself challenged by ordinary Chinese, it opts for a response right out of Communist central casting.
The latest was this weeks tear-gassing of the most gentle, law-abiding citizens youll find. In so doing, authorities elevated the humble umbrella into a democratic icon, used by protestors to shield themselves from sun and rain and, now, their own police force firing tear gas.
In so doing, too, Chinese leaders unwittingly opened up yet another avenue for their own humiliation.
Look what happened Oct 1.
The date marks the anniversary of Maos declaration of the Peoples Republic of China. These days its a holiday in Hong Kong, where officials show up for solemn ceremonies filled with pieties no one really believes about the heroic achievements of the Peoples Republic and the love of Hong Kong people for the motherland.
This Wednesday, the entire holiday was up-ended by a local pro-democracy councilman, Paul Zimmerman. During the official ceremony, a smiling Zimmerman unfurled a bright yellow umbrella.
The photograph of that yellow umbrella standing out sharply against the sea of grim black suits and red flags went around the world, just another of the many highly public embarrassments not only for Leung but for his masters in Beijing.
Leung must be getting used to it. Today, no one in Hong Kong refers to Leung by either his name or his office. In a city of more than 7 million people, hes referred to as 689, a reminder of the number of votes in the Beijing-appointed committee that selected him as Hong Kongs leader.

Thierry Henry is being tipped to leave the New York Red Bulls at the end of 2014 but could look beyond the lure of retirement if his MLS exit is confirmed.
Grant Wahl of Sports Illustrated provided information that suggests Henry is coming toward the end of his four-year spell with the NY-based club:
Red Bull soccer boss Gerard Houllier hinted at things over the summer when he said that he didn't think Henry would extend with New York, and a source with knowledge of Red Bulls plans now tells SI.com there is "zero chance" that Henry will sign an extension. (That doesnt necessarily mean that Henry will retire, however.)
Wahl also indicates that Red Bull's willingness to be involved in the club is beginning to disappear due to the dwindling global profits of the team. "Don't look for Red Bull to be involved in MLS in the long-term future," Wahl writes, per SI.
Franco Panizo, writer for MLSsoccer.com, tweeted a statement from Red Bull in response to Wahl's report:
Henry's exit would likely halt the interest of many onlookers and could see the side's profits deplete. His shirt sales in MLS were second only to David Beckham in 2012, and he remains a major draw for both American and European audiences.
The Frenchman made the move to New York at the right time and has managed to prolong his career by joining a division that is less intense than Europe's best. He remains a classy finisher, extremely assured with his own ability, and the type of player who can pop up with something special at any time.
His loan return to Arsenal in 2012 highlighted the hubbub that still surrounds Henry when he heads back to England, suggesting the Red Bulls will struggle to find a bigger star. Their potential rivals, New York City FC, have Frank Lampard and David Villa waiting on the books, meaning interest could turn to the Manchester City-affiliated club when it begins competitive play.
LA Galaxy legend Landon Donovan highlighted the importance of Henry, per the Red Bulls' Twitter feed:
Tim Cahill would remain the one true Red Bulls star if Henry left should we judge on appeal outside of the MLS. Even prolific striker Bradley Wright-Phillips isn't particularly well remembered in England, struggling to make it in the Premier League and eventually going on to enjoy his best spells with Plymouth, Charlton and Brentford further down the football league structure.

You don't have to become an astronaut to use the International Space Station's new 3D printer.
NASA has challenged students, ages 5 to 19, to design 3D-printed tools that could be made in microgravity.
The first 3D printer to fly in space arrived at the astronaut outpost last month aboard a SpaceX Dragon capsule. SpaceX delivered the machine along with more than 5,000 lbs. (2,268 kilograms) of cargo on its fourth resupply mission to the space station for NASA.
The printer was built by the California-based company Made in Space, which plans to create simple plastic parts at first, to test whether 3D printing is viable in the final frontier. Now, students will have a chance to take part in that experiment.
NASAand the American Society of Mechanical Engineers Foundation launched a set of "Future Engineers" 3D Space Challenges on Sept. 21. The contest asks students in grades K-12 to create and submit a digital 3D model of a tool that they think astronauts will need in space.
"As you know we don't have overnight shipping up in space, so when we really need something we have to wait," NASA astronaut Doug Wheelock, who spent six months living and working on the space station in 2010, said in a video announcing the challenge. "To be able to make parts on demand will forever change that for us."
Entries, which are due by Dec. 15, will be judged for their creativity, usefulness and adherence to design guidelines. Semifinalists will be announced in mid-January and the winners will be revealed on Jan. 30.
The grand prize for the winning teen entrant (ages 13 to 19) includes a trip to NASA's Payload Operations in Huntsville, Alabama, where the student will watch his or her print made live on the space station. The winner in the 5- to 12-year-old set will get a 3D printer for his or her school.

Ricky Tomlinson and a Hillsborough survivor are set to speak at a conference in Liverpool highlighting National Miscarriage of Justice Day.
The actor, comedian and activist will give a talk at the United Against Injustice event at Liverpool John Moores University next week.
Other guest speakers on Saturday, October 11 will include Daniel Macarthur, whose friend Ian Glover, a 20-year-old street paver, died at Hillsborough.
Hillsborough victim Ian Glover (left) with his brother Joe
Ricky, who is to be awarded the Freedom of Liverpool the citys highest civic honour in a town hall ceremony on Monday, is a longtime campaigner for justice.
The 74-year-old was one of the Shrewsbury 24, a group of flying pickets who went from site to site to try and convince workers to join the 1972 building workers strike.
The trade unionist was arrested and jailed for 16 months over the tactics, and has campaigned to have his conviction for conspiracy to intimidate overturned to this day.
Mr Macarthur is a Liverpool FC fan who gave evidence to the Hillsborough Independent Panel .
A UAI spokesman said: With the new Hillsborough inquests underway and unlikely to be concluded until next year, his talk will by necessity be restricted to the campaigning aspect of seeking justice for the 96 and the hardships and difficulties faced along the way.
The event at the John Foster Building will be UAIs 13th annual public meeting and workshops

When we founded our first product, EasyBib, in high school, my friend and I wanted to introduce the service as soon as possible. We understood firsthand as students that doing a bibliography was a total pain, and that we can automate citation generation with a website. Our friends and teachers said that they would use the service, too.
So we worked every day after school and over the weekend building EasyBib. I have fond memories of working out of my friend and business partner Darshans childhood room, brainstorming how the site would work, and actually building it out.
After two months, we had a version of EasyBib that did just enough. It could cite a few sources and compile a bibliography. We showed it to our teachers and friends, and as we had hoped, they loved it and used it. Moreover, they found EasyBib valuable enough where they started to tell others about the service.
In retrospect, much of what we did followed lean startup principles. We tackled a problem we acutely faced. We received qualitative feedback from our peers and teachers to make sure that this was indeed a problem, and that EasyBib was a solution that people would use. And we a built a product just good enough, in lean startup terms a minimum viable product (MVP), that people could use and found valuable enough to tell their friends.
Our next product
That was in 2001. Fast forward to today, and EasyBib has over 40 million users, and we have acquired two similar properties with another 30 million users.
Our dream, though, has always been to build a larger company under our legal name, Imagine Easy Solutions, that can launch successful products from conception to implementation. So in March 2013, we decided to build a new product called GetCourse.
Through our experience in education technology, we witnessed the power of massive open online courses (MOOCs). We thought, lets build a solution that makes it insanely easy to create such online courses that we could use ourselves for internal and customer training.
Trying to get lean the second time around
In the spirit of being lean, we discussed the idea with friends and showed them very basic wireframes. Some told us they could use a product like that, and others told us they saw a good product market fit for intuitive and simple online course creation.
