'Rise and Rise of Bitcoin' a clear-cut take on digital currency

Whether the crypto-currency in this documentary film is viewed as the inevitable future of e-commerce or a speculative bubble destined to burst, "The Rise and Rise of Bitcoin" makes for an enlightening primer.

Using his bitcoin-obsessed computer-programmer brother Dan as a tour guide, filmmaker Nicholas Mross takes a straight-ahead, even-handed approach to the controversial payment system.

Tracing the bitcoin to 2009, when a shadowy figure with the moniker Satoshi Nakamoto first floated the open source, peer-to-peer concept of "global decentralized money," the documentary follows a community of tech geeks who were among the early adopters.

They were soon joined by a parade of high-rolling speculators, libertarians and black market dealers who were all attracted to the notion of a currency that wasn't tied to the institutional banking system or personal identity.

Inevitably the federal regulators caught up (one of the film's subjects notes that historically, regulation evolves slower than innovation) and crackdowns and subpoenas followed.

As a result, several of those featured bitcoin millionaires are later shown filing for bankruptcy or, in the case of Charlie Shrem, former chief executive of the early bitcoin exchange BitInstant, being arrested. (Last month he pleaded guilty to aiding and abetting the operation of an unlicensed money transmitting business.)

Despite subsequent damage inflicted by hackers and scammers, the bitcoin (currently hovering around $380 to $385) endures.

Comets burn through Go-Hawks

CHARLES CITY | Charles City volleyball hasn't been short on star power in recent years.

This season, first-year head coach Donna Forsyth is finding new ways to expand her arsenal of weapons. Iowa State commit Hali Hillegas has become a go-to hitter in addition to working as a setter within a system change to a two-setter, 6-2 rotation.

Thursday night in Charles City, Hillegas recorded 18 kills on .412 hitting to go with 21 assists and four aces as Class 4A's No. 4-rated Comets prevailed in four sets over Northeast Iowa Conference rival Waverly-Shell Rock, 25-13, 25-23, 27-29, 25-18.

First-year Charles City setter Meagan Miller, a player Forsyth praised for her good hands, also made a difference across the board as she tallied a triple-double of 13 kills, 20 assists and 12 digs. Hillegas worked numerous quick sets to middle Jamie Sindlinger, who added 13 kills and 6.5 blocks.

"I think switching to a 6-2, it's really helped us in a good way," Hillegas said. "Everyone is still figuring out where to go and where not to go, but I think it's definitely helped us positively.

"Throughout club season, I hit and I set. So I think just bringing it back to school ball is an easier transition for me, and I think my team counts on me more."

The win pulled Charles City (21-3) one step closer to securing a Northeast Iowa Conference regular season title that has been traded back-and-forth with Waverly-Shell Rock throughout the years. The Comets have now won seven of their last eight matches over Waverly-Shell Rock, including two victories in the state tournament.

"Before, they always beat us and beat us and now finally everything is turning around," Hillegas said, addressing her program's recent run of success. "I think playing in bigger tournaments has helped us here a lot, knowing that we can actually do it no matter what kind of crowd."

Forsyth was pleased with the end result, but disappointed with the manner in which Charles City got to the finish line. The Comets cruised through the first set as Hillegas pounded seven kills to the ground, but struggled to close out the final three frames.

Waverly-Shell Rock (16-15) rallied from down 8-1 to tie set two at 23 before a pair of miscues gave the frame to the Comets.

Comets Fall to Penguins in Pre Season Opener

October 2, 2014 - American Hockey League (AHL) Utica Comets The Utica Comets opened up their three-game preseason schedule with a 4-2 loss at the hands of the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins, at Mohegan Sun Arena at Casey Plaza in Wilkes-Barre, PA on Wednesday night.

Carter Bancks and rookie Brendan Gaunce netted goals for the Comets, while Jacob Markstrom turned aside 23 of 27 shots faced in his Comets debut. Conor Sheary led the way for the Penguins with three points (1-2-3) on the night.

The Penguins got on the board 10:13 into the first period when Sheary fired a shot on Comets goaltender Jacob Markstrom who made the initial stop. Sheary picked up the rebound and fed a pass over to Bryan Rust in the slot, who buried a one-timer.

Scott Wilson added a power-play goal later in the first to extend the Penguins lead to 2-0. Jayson Megna cleanly won the face-off in the Comets zone to Wilson, who ripped a shot through traffic and past Markstrom.

Just 1:44 into the second period, the Penguins found the back of the net again after Sheary lifted a rebound over the extended pad of Markstrom, to inflate their lead to 3-0. Bryan Rust recorded an assist with his initial shot on net.

Carter Bancks recorded the first goal of the 2014-15 preseason for the Comets with a slapshot off the post and into Mike Murray's net. 2006 first round draft pick Bobby Sanguinetti recorded an assist on the goal.

The Penguins got their final tally of the evening, on a blast from the blue line from Nick D'Agnostino that found its way through traffic and past Markstrom 7:45 into the final period.

Brendan Gaunce concluded the night's scoring with just 1:05 left to play in the game. The 2012 first round draft pick took a feed from Stefan Legien and beat Murray for his first goal as a Comet.

The Comets are back in action Friday night as they take on the Adirondack Flames at the sold out John F. Kennedy Arena in Rome, NY at 7pm.

Workington Comets' Glasgow fixture rearranged

Last updated at 09:39, Thursday, 02 October 2014

Workington Comets trip across the border to Glasgow this weekend has been postponed until the end of the month.

Comets Premier League meeting with Glasgow Tigers, set for Sunday, will now be staged on October 26 at 3pm.

They would have been without Josh Grajczonek through injury and Rene Bach is also out on Polish League duty while Joe Jacobs is wanted by Mildenhall for their National League play-offs fight.

The Tigers would also have been missing Victor Palovaara, Kevin Wolbert and ex-Comet Rusty Harrison, so it was mutually agreed to push back the meeting.

The rearranged fixture will be Comets last away trip and final league fixture of the 2014 season and they are hoping to field something close to a full-strength team.

Laura Morgan, Workington owner, said: Of course you always want to see good, competitive racing. We also want the fans to see what they havent had much of a chance to see this season, which is Workington racing with a full seven.

Talking About Your Psoriasis to Others

When you know how to explain your psoriasis to others, it can relieve some of the stress that goes along with your skin condition.

"The more people around you that know about it, the more support you'll get," says Linda Cornish. She's a dermatology nurse who helps people with psoriasis at Kaiser-Permanente Medical Center in Oakland, CA. "And being open and honest can make you feel less self-conscious."

These six tips can help you talk about your psoriasis to friends and coworkers.

1. Choose the right time.

Figure out a time and a place that will make you feel comfortable.

"If you're relaxed and at ease, the person you're talking to is more likely to feel at ease," says Julie Nelligan, PhD. She's a health psychologist in private practice in Portland, OR.

The right setting is likely to depend in part on the person you're talking to. With a coworker, you may want to bring up the subject during a break or over lunch. If you're talking to someone you've begun dating, you may want to arrange a special time.

2. Think through what you want to say.

Plan it out. That can help make things easier. Chances are you'll also feel more relaxed. How much detail you give will depend on the person you're talking with.

A coworker may need to know only what psoriasis is and that they cant catch it. Your boss might need to know about your treatments if that means taking time off from work. When talking to a date, you may want to explain what living with psoriasis is like for you.
