FORT ELLIS There are far more fish species than striped bass that spawn and live in the Stewiacke River that could be impacted by having salt brine released into the eco system, a commercial fisherman says.

Its not the only species it affects by far, said Darren Porter, who also serves as the vice-president of the Striped Bass Anglers Associationof Nova Scotia.

Youve got all these other species that use this system, to spawn in, not just live in, he said, of other fish stocks that include smelt, shad, gaspereau, river herring, salmon, sea-run trout and speckled trout.

These are very important species, Porter said, while discussing concerns with other fish association members at the base camp of a protest site held this week along Highway 102 near Stewiacke.

Make a cyborg pumpkin surprise with the Hack-o-Lantern kit

Let your geek side loose this Halloween by using a Hack-o-Lantern kit to turn a regular pumpkin into a light-up boo machine.

This quick kit turns a pumpkin into a battery-powered jack-o'-lantern. LittleBits

Carved pumpkins are popular at Halloween. Sound-triggered electronic scare devices are also popular at Halloween. It's high time the two trends got together. LittleBits has put together a modular Hack-o-Lantern kit to combine your twin loves of fiddling with electronics and pulling the slimy, seed-laden mush out of a large orange squash.

The end result of the Hack-o-Lantern kit is a jack-o'-lantern that lights up an LED when it hears noise. It sits around, minding its own business, looking like its candle has burned out, until a trick-or-treater walks up to your door. Then it flashes on, illuminating whatever scary pattern you've carved into it. I would suggest a Dalek, Grumpy Cat or a bent iPhone 6 Plus.

The kit includes all the pieces you need to cyborg-ify a pumpkin. It comes with a battery, battery cable, power module, sound trigger, bright LED and "shoes" that help hold the gear in place.

To make it work, you put the circuit together and mount it inside the pumpkin. Set it on your porch and peek through your curtain to see if anybody notices. Combine it with one of those doormats that makes spooky noises when someone steps on it and you'll be well on your way to creating the proper Halloween ambiance for candy-seeking tykes.

If you want your pumpkin to just stay lit, then you can remove the sound trigger. The kit is a limited-edition offering just for Halloween for $29. That converts to about 18 or AU$33.50 -- LittleBits ships internationally (more info here). The snap-together modular nature of the pieces makes this an ideal project for parents who want to get their kids interested in electronics. After Halloween is over, you can pull the kit apart, order different modular pieces and start creating new hacks. And that's probably the best treat of all.

Great white shark attacks surfer; 3 Central Calif. beaches closed

Vandenberg Air Force officials have closed three beaches after a surfer was attacked by a great white shark Thursday evening.

The surfer suffered non-life threatening injuries to his knee, as well as cuts to other parts of his body, in the attack, which occurred about 5:30 p.m. a quarter-mile north of Wall Beach, officials said.

Ralph Collier, president of the Shark Research Institute, said the shark was 8 to 10 feet long.

The confirmed attack prompted Vandenberg Air Force Base to close Surf, Wall and Minuteman beaches for 72 hours. The order will be lifted at 4 p.m. Sunday, according to a statement from the base, which is north of Lompoc in Santa Barbara County.

Officials at the base asked the public to avoid the beaches "due to safety considerations."

Collier said he plans to examine the surfer's surfboard, which was scraped, to get more information about the shark in the attack.

With more beachgoers heading to the shore and a main food source -- seals and sea lions -- on the upswing in California, the chances of a shark encounter have jumped, he said.

"I am surprised we don't have more events like this," Collier said.

Still, shark attacks remain extremely rare: Someone is more likely to die by being struck by a falling coconut than being attacked by a shark, Collier said.

Officials have logged 50 to 100 shark attacks per year worldwide since record-keeping began, he said. Of those attacks, only eight to 12 have been fatal.

IAU Invites Astronomical Organizations to Join Directory for World Astronomy

The IAU invites all public organizations with an interest in astronomy to register on the IAU Directory for World Astronomy website for the NameExoWorlds contest, where they will in early 2015 be able to suggest names for exoplanets and their host stars. For the first time in history the public will then be able to vote for the official names of stars and planets. The deadline for registration for the contest is 31 December 2014. Details of the registration procedure can be found on the websitehttp://directory.iau.org. Eligible organizations include planetariums, science centers, amateur astronomy clubs, and online astronomy platforms, but also non-profit organizations such as high schools or cultural clubs interested in astronomy. The updated schedule for the IAU NameExoWorlds contest is as follows:1. A list of 305 well-characterized exoplanets, discovered prior to 31 December 2008, has been selected for naming by the IAU Exoplanets for the Public Working Group (http://www.iau.org/science/scientific_bodies/working_groups/211), and the list was published in July on thehttp://www.NameExoWorlds.orgwebsite. These exoplanets belong to 260 exoplanetary systems comprising one to five planets and their host stars.2. The IAU Directory for World Astronomy website (http://directory.iau.org) is launched today, and astronomy clubs and non-profit organizations interested in naming these exoworlds are invited to register. The IAU has the capability to handle the registration of thousands of such groups.3. In January 2015, these clubs and organizations will be asked to vote for the 20-30 exoworlds they wish to name out of the list provided by the IAU. The actual number will depend on how many groups have registered.4. From February 2015, registered clubs and organizations will be able to send proposed names for the planets and host stars of these selected exoworlds, based on the rules in the IAU Exoplanet Naming Conventions (http://www.iau.org/public/themes/naming_exoplanets), together with a detailed supporting argument for their choice. Each group will be allowed to name only one exoworld. More details on this stage will be given later.5. From April 2015, the general public will be able to vote on the proposed exoworld names. The IAU and Zooniverse (https://www.zooniverse.org) are ready to handle a million votes or more worldwide.6. Starting from July 2015, the IAU, via its Public Naming of Planets and Planetary Satellites Working Group, will oversee the final stages of the contest and will validate the winning names from the vote.7. The final results of the selected names for the exoplanets and their host stars will be announced at a special public ceremony held during the IAU XXIX General Assembly in Honolulu, Hawaii, USA (http://astronomy2015.org), 3-14 August 2015.In order to adapt to local requirements, the IAU is calling for volunteers worldwide to help with translation -- interested volunteers please contact us atoutreach@iau.org.Registration for the NameExoWorlds contest is just one of the planned functions of the IAU Directory for World Astronomy website. The sites scope is much wider as it will function as a platform for the global astronomical community to meet, and it will act also as an information portal for the public to learn about astronomy activities internationally and locally. The second phase of the IAU Directory for World Astronomy will be launched later this year, and will include an event calendar, which astronomical organizations can use to publish and promote their events easily through this one-stop service for the general public.Contacts:Sze-leung CheungIAU International Outreach CoordinatorTokyo, Japan+81 (0)422-34-389, cell: +81 (0)80-9274-2454cheungszeleung@iau.orgThierry MontmerleIAU General Secretary / Institut dAstrophysique de ParisParis, France+33 1 43 25 83 58montmerle@iap.frLars Lindberg ChristensenIAU Press OfficerGarching bei Mnchen, Germany+49 89 320 06 761, cell: +49 173 38 72 621lars@eso.orgThe IAU is an international astronomical organization of more than 10,000 professional astronomers from more than 90 countries.
