HAZLETON On his way to an electrifying 34-yard touchdown run, Crestwood quarterback Jay Popson refused to stop until he reached the end zone.
Not many of his teammates were denied either.
Frank Aigeldinger rushed for three touchdowns, Popson scored two and unbeaten Crestwood hammered Hazleton Area, 41-7 by putting the mercy rule into effect midway through the second quarter Friday at Harman Geist Stadium.
The victory kept 6-0 Crestwood as the only undefeated team in the Wyoming Valley Conference, and set up next weekends showdown with Class 4A power Wyoming Valley West.
But the Comets certainly werent looking ahead to it.
It was certainly a concern of ours, something we talked to our kids about all week - No let-down, Crestwood coach Greg Myers said. Everybodys gunning for us now. We certainly cant look past anybody.
Instead, the Comets simply looked for the end zone.
Aigeldinger scored on touchdown runs of 1 and 32 yards on his first three carries, and the other was a 24-yard sprint on Crestwoods first offensive play to set up his short score. Aigeldinger later added a 34-yard touchdown romp to give Crestwood a 27-0 lead less than a minute into the second quarter, which finished the night for the leagues leading rusher at 91 yards on four carries.
Frankie ran the ball well, Myers said. They really didnt have an answer for him.
Plenty of other Comets proved a problem for Hazleton Area, too.

October 3, 2014 - American Hockey League (AHL) Utica Comets The Utica Comets evened their pre season record to 1-1 with a 4-2 win over the American Hockey League's newest franchise, the Adirondack Flames, at John F. Kennedy Arena in Rome, NY.
All proceeds from the game were donated to the John F. Kennedy Arena to benefit all the programs that call the arena home. The Comets will make their Utica debut on Wednesday, Oct. 22, against the same Adirondack Flames, in the team's home opener.
Dustin Jeffrey (2-0-2) and Alexandre Grenier (1-1-2) led the way for the Comets with two points apiece, while goaltender Joacim Eriksson (1-0-0-0) notched the win in relief of Jacob Markstrom, turning aside all six shots he faced.
The Flames got on the board first at the 17:15 mark. Bryce Van Brabant emerged from a battle for the puck in the corner. Van Brabant streaked across the bottom half of the faceoff circle and beat Markstrom high blocker with a wrist shot, for the unassisted tally.
Van Brabant would add an assist to his night after setting up the Flames second goal of the night. 7:41 into the second period, Van Brabant wristed a shot from below the goal line that ricocheted off of Markstrom's leg pad and in to the slot, directly to an awaiting Kenny Agostino who would not miss from there.
Joacim Eriksson took over goaltending duties at the 9:59 mark of the second period as part of a pre-planned goaltending switch.
The third period was all Comets, starting with a highlight reel shot from Dustin Jeffrey. After receiving a breakout pass from defenseman Kane Lafranchise, Jeffrey streaked into the Flames zone, along the boards, and let loose a wrist shot that beat goaltender Mathieu Corbeil high on the short side.
Just two and a half minutes later, Dustin Jeffery struck again. After drawing the lone defenseman on a 2-on-1 over to him, Grenier slid a pass over to Jeffrey who was in all alone. A quick deke, and a backhand flip over the extended leg pad of Corbeil, later, led to a tied game.
Two and a half minutes after that, Brendan Gaunce sliced across the top of the crease while firing a shot on goal. Corbeil denied the original shot, but Patrick Kennedy was there to put the rebound home.
With just 37 seconds remaining, Grenier broke out of the Comets defensive zone and put the game away as he scored on an empty net from the blue line.

MELFORT-
The MUCC Comets football team took an early lead over the LP Miller Bears by returning the opening kickoff for a touchdown on October 3 in Melfort.
The Bears gave up a safety on their first possession and Melfort quickly added another touchdown. After the Bears went two and out the Comets scored again and led 23-0 just four minutes into the game.
After the Comets scored again some younger players started logging time on the field.
The score was 44-0 at halftime.
The Bears scored their first points of the game at the very end of the third quarter. The conversion missed leaving them trailing 47-6.
They added another touchdown late in the fourth quarter. This time the two-point conversion was good, cutting Melforts lead to 47-14.
With only 23 seconds remaining in the game the Bears scored again.
This time the two-point conversion missed and the game ended at 47-20.
The Comets have a bye next week but are preparing for a rematch with the Humboldt Mohawks in Melfort on October 17.

Rapid City Christian celebrated a very literal homecoming with a lopsided win over undermanned Bison.
Playing for the first time this season at Kelly John Duininck Field, the Comets got their offense on track very early and scored on all but one possession en route to a 58-8 rout of the Cardinals on Friday night.
It was fun to be at home, having our home crowd with us and playing on the beautiful field we have here, said Comets quarterback Paul McLaughlin, who ran for a touchdown, threw for two more and caught a 63-yard scoring pass from Jadd Evans to end the game at the end of the second quarter.
Ive got to give God credit first, and then our linemen. They were incredible. They gave me great time in the pocket and made great holes for our running backs. They won the game for us, McLaughlin said.
Evans intercepted a pass and also caught a McLaughlin toss for a touchdown. Jordan Graper ran for a pair of touchdowns and a conversion. Brennan Udager also scored for the Comets, who improved to 4-1 after a 50-0 humbling at Faith last week.
We needed to get started fast, Comets coach Cory Graper said. Last week, not a whole lot went well for us. We needed to make up for it this week.
The Comets opened with four straight games on the road, including a trip to Deadwood to play in the Prospector Bowl, a 38-0 shutout of Newell on Sept. 13
Week 2 was supposed to be here, but we accepted a Prospector Bowl invite, so we went to Deadwood for that. Its been four weeks on the road, so its nice to be home, Graper said.
Coach Wayne Sanders said the Cardinals had to regroup after a slew of injuries last week, particularly the loss of starting quarterback Ethan Anderson.
We had two or three kids hurt after last week and it just killed us, Sanders said. The kids played hard and thats all you can do.

CHARLES CITY | On paper, Friday nights Class 3A, District 3 clash between third-ranked West Delaware and Charles City looked like it could be a competitive game as the two teams both entered the contest undefeated in district play.
The battle lived up to the hype as West Delaware held off Charles City 20-14, improving to 6-0 overall and 4-0 in district play while the Comets fell to 4-2 overall and 2-1 in the district.
What we take away from this game is that were legit, Charles City coach Darren Bohlen said. Were a good team. We showed that we can compete for a district title. We fell a little short but we still have other opportunities. We have to win out and hope that West Delaware gets knocked off by a team here, which could happen. A district title is still not out of the question.
After forcing the Hawks to punt on their first possession, the Comets went 66 yards in nine plays as Levi Blaine scored on a 31-yard touchdown run with 6 minutes, 9 seconds remaining in the first quarter.
Blaine, who threw for 60 yards and ran for a team-high 110 yards on 14 carries, gave the Comets their only lead as West Delaware scored three times in the first half including twice in the final four minutes to take a 20-6 halftime lead.
We were doing a great job in the first half but we gave up a few too many big plays that athletes make sometimes, Bohlen said. We didnt score and then they came down and scored at the end. That little stretch of the game right there was the difference. We were in their territory and didnt score and then they scored right before the half.
On their final drive of the half, the Comets turned the ball over on downs with 1:54 remaining at the West Delaware 36 before Brent Lammers connected with Austin Bishop for a 17-yard touchdown strike with 3 seconds remaining.
Lammers, who also threw a 53-yard touchdown pass to Dallyn Putz and ran for a 1-yard score, had 50 yards on the ground while adding 144 yards through the air.
However, Lammers had just 11 yards passing in the second half while the Comets limited Coy Roussell, who ran for a game-high 115 yards on 22 carries, to 43 yards in the second half.
Our defense did a great job containing the quarterback and the tailback, Bohlen said. On film, they spread it out a little bit but they tried power running. We showed that teams arent going to be able to run it down our throats. We bent a little but we didnt break.
