Freedom struggle revisited

It was a vivid portrayal of the 200 year old freedom struggle of our country by 200 kids of Sri Sivananda Balalalya.

All the milestone events of the freedom movement were portrayed with lan. Sepoy mutiny, salt satyagraha, denouncing of videshi goods and patronising swadeshi goods, non-cooperative movement and finally Jawaharlal Nehrus speech of Tryst with destiny transported the audience to a different era.

Interspersed with Bharathiars poems Vandhe Matharam enbom, Velli Pani Malaiyin Meethulavuvom, the novel theatre presentation, held at Sundaram Ammal Kalai Arangam at K.A.P.Viswanatham Higher Secondary School at Thillai Nagar on Saturday impacted the children and audience with a spirit and pride of being an Indian.

The idea is to make this theatre presentation marking the birthday celebrations of Mahatma Gandhi on October 2 to fire the young minds with patriotic fervour which is sadly absent among the younger generation. It is also to make them proud of being an Indian said K.G.Meenakshi, Correspondent of Sri Sivananda Balalaya.

Audience went into raptures when the salt satyagraha was depicted on stage. Patriotic fervour filled the minds of audience when children danced to the songs of poet Bharathi. The children sported tricolor with the slogan I am proud to be an Indian and also carried the speeches of great leaders in placards.

N. Siva, Rajya Sabha MP, was the chief guest. He appreciated the children for their enthusiasm and creativity. The children said that they were very fortunate to participate in the programme and would remember the landmarks of our freedom struggle.

Deadline looms for eugenics claims compensation

RALEIGH A first deadline for compensation payments to those sterilized under North Carolinas past eugenics program is looming at the end of the month and less than a third of compensation claims have been approved.

Authorities who are reviewing claims say one main reason so few claims have been approved is that a state law setting aside $10 million for the qualifying victims doesnt cover many of those who had been sterilized. As of Sept. 30, the N.C. Industrial Commission had approved 213 claims for compensation of the 731 claims reviewed, or about 30 percent. The Office of Justice for Sterilization Victims has received another 55 claims that the commission hasnt yet reviewed under the state law, approved in July 2013.

Major reasons for denials which victims can appeal include missing paperwork and a determination someone wasnt sterilized on orders of the Eugenics Board of North Carolina but on orders issued at the county level, said Graham Wilson, spokesman for the state Commerce Department. That department oversees the commission tasked with approving claims.

North Carolina sterilized about 7,600 people whom the state deemed feeble-minded or otherwise undesirable between 1929 and 1974. Wilson noted that compensation is allowed only those sterilized under orders of the state eugenics board.

Its the way the statute is written, Wilson said. If counties took it upon themselves to do it under their authority, they do not qualify. Victims can appeal, he said, but if the documents show the procedure wasnt done under the state authority, they really dont have any case in this process.

Some of the victims were as young as 10 and chosen because they were promiscuous or did not get along with their schoolmates, authorities have said. While most were either forced or coerced into having the procedure, a small number of them chose to be sterilized.

But thats just at the state level.

Its not known how many were sterilized at the county level, said Elizabeth Haddix, senior staff attorney with the UNC Center for Civil Rights, which is representing 40 victims. Of those, just 10 had files from the state board, she noted.

The rest of them, their stories were almost identical in terms of having a social worker come to their delivery room or hospital room, she said. The social worker might tell the patient, usually a black woman, that she wouldnt be eligible for public assistance unless she was sterilized, Haddix said.

Others werent even asked, she said, noting one client who went in for surgery to remove her appendix came out of the operating room sterilized.

Commissioners nix request to subsidize Avon transit

EAGLE Avon likely wont be getting the additional $175,000 it wants from Eagle County to prop up the towns bus system.

In a work session last week with the county commissioners, Avon officials say thats what it would cost to haul employees to and from Buffalo Ridge and other places. They insisted that mission of ECO Transit, the countys bus system, is to move employees, and since Buffalo Ridge is employee housing, the county should help up the transit tab.

Avon asked for another $25,000 this year and $150,000 next year.

The commissioners took a dim view of the request.

Avon raising the rent

Commissioner Sara Fisher was the most outspoken opponent, pointing out that the county came up with $234,000 for Avons new transit building, and co-sponsored Avons grant applications to pay for the rest of it. Without the countys participation, Avon was not eligible for the money, Fisher said.

It would not have been built without the countys participation. Avon was not eligible for the grants it needed without the countys involvement., Fisher said.

Also, Avon just raised the countys rent to park ECO buses in Avon, Fisher pointed out.

Right now, the county pays $505 a month for each space in which it parks an ECO bus in Avon usually nine spaces for a total of $54,540 a year.

Avon wants to raise the rent 22.1 percent ($108) next year to $613 per parking place for a rent total of $66,204 a year.
