Comets undefeated after victory over Bears

The junior players on the MUCC Comets football team logged a lot of play time on Friday during a 47-20 win over the Nipawin Bears. Comets head coach Dave Rogers aid the senior players accomplished their goals early in the game before stepping aside and letting the younger players to experience a game atmosphere. It was a great experience for them and they got to play lots and they are going to get to play lots again. We play Nipawin again (October 24 in Nipawin) and they are going to have a lot of opportunity to play, Rogers said. It will be a good way for the juniors to see how far that they can grow in those weeks. Junior players typically takes to the field near the end of the game or during junior jamborees. However they played over an entire half against the Bears. This game setting is completely different from a junior jamboree according to Rogers. I dont think it really compares to a jamboree. They are totally different experiences for the simple fact that, in this case, we are asking our younger players in many cases to play against players that are quite a bit older than them, larger and have a maturity difference. The Comets started out strong as Matthew Goudy returned the opening kickoff for a touchdown. In Nipawins first possession the Comets defense forced a safety adding two more points. Melforts first offensive series led to another touchdown, this one by Tyler Jones. The defense held the Bears to no yards before the offense took the field again, adding another touchdown. This one from Jomar Malaggay. Just four minutes into the game the Comets led 23-0. They added three more touchdowns before the end of the firs quarter. Brandon Kadachuk scored two while Jones added another making the score 44-0 at the end of the first quarter. Early in the second quarter Sean Renouf kicked a 35 yard field goal rounding out the Comets scoring. At the very end of the third quarter the Bears wrecked the Comets shutout bid and held the Comets scoreless in the fourth quarter. At the very end of the third quarter Lucas Woods had a 10-yard touchdown run. The conversion missed leaving the Bears with six points. Nipawin added another one with a minute and a half remaining in the contest when Carter Pierlot kept the ball and ran 17 yards for a touchdown. This time the Bears went for a two-point conversion and scored, giving them 14 points. Their offense was not done yet. With 23 seconds left in the game, Kyle Cox caught a 30-yard pass from Pierlot for a touchdown. The Bears went for two again, this time they missed to end the game. The Comets have a bye this week letting them concentrate on their own attributes for a short while. Volleyball bronze for senior boys Comets

The MUCC Comets senior boys and senior girls volleyball teams competed at tournaments in Regina and Warman, respectively over the weekend. The senior boys captured bronze at Regina Winston Knoll while the senior girls placed eighth in Warman. The senior boys Comets captured third place by defeating Melville 25-22 25-18 on Saturday. The third place finish was the Comets best finish of the year. They dropped to the bronze game after losing 18-25,25-22,11-15 to the eventual champions from Regina Leboldus earlier in the day on Saturday. The Comets defeated Weyburn 25-22, 25-8 to advance to the semis on Saturday. The senior boys placed second in their pool. On Friday, October 3 the Comets split their matches, losing to the host Winston Knoll team 20-25, 15-25, but defeating Melville 25-12,16-25,15-13. On Saturday the Comets finished the round robin by defeating Cudworth 25-12,25-15 and Annaheim 25-12,25-16. The senior girls opened in Warman by losing to Outlook 18 -25, 18 25 on Friday afternoon. In their second round robin game they lost to Waldheim 14 -25, 16 -25, Melfort picked up their first win defeating Hague 25 19, 25 19 on Saturday. In their next game they split with John Paul II from North Battleford25 14, 20 25. In their next game they lost to Unity 20 -25, 22 25. The Comets then defeated the Warman B team 25 19, 25 20, they wrapped up the tournament losing to Wilkie 14 -25, 22 25. With Thanksgiving break both the senior boys and girls will have a bye week. The boys next competition will be in two weeks at the PA Carlton tournament on October 17 and 18. The senior girls will be in Moose Jaw. It will be good time to have a break with no tournament this weekend, senior girls Comets coach Rob Moore said.

American Hockey League President and CEO David Andrews announced today that the AHL Board of Governors has unanimously approved the selection of the Utica Comets as hosts of the 2015 AHL All-Star Classic presented by Turning Stone Resort Casino on Jan. 25-26, 2015.

The 2015 AHL All-Star Classic presented by Turning Stone Resort Casino will include the AHL All-Star Skills Competition on Sunday, January 25, followed by the AHL Hall of Fame Induction and Awards Ceremony on Monday, January 26 and the 2015 AHL All-Star Game that evening. The Skills Competition and the All-Star Game will take place at the Utica Memorial Auditorium in downtown Utica; all other events during the All-Star Classic will take place at Turning Stone Resort Casino in nearby Verona, N.Y.

"The American Hockey League is thrilled to be bringing our showcase event to Utica this winter," said Andrews. "Each year, hockey's brightest young stars shine on our All-Star stage in front of capacity crowds and international television audiences. Between the great fans in the Mohawk Valley, the rich history of the Aud and the world-class accommodations at Turning Stone, the 2015 AHL All-Star Classic is destined to be the most memorable All-Star Classic to date."

Philips turns the light on psoriasis

BlueControl can be strapped on to any part of the body

Sufferers of psoriasis, an incurable skin disease that breaks out in scaly red plaques and also causes the skin to peel, will shortly get a new ally in the management of the condition. Lighting giant Philips is about to launch BlueControl, an LED light unit that can help patients of mild and moderate cases with no side effects.

The device was developed based on findings from research showing that blue LED light treatment slows down the root cause of psoriasis, which is the rapid division of cells. It can also reduce skin inflammation. Philips designed an unobtrusive battery-powered strap-on unit that can be placed on the parts of the body that are affected by the irritating skin disease.

The system does not use regular LED lights, which are not always suitable for medical-grade applications such as BlueControl. Philips carried out research with academic and clinical partners in order to develop pulsed LED lights with higher intensities. Altogether, the system features 40 of those UV-free blue lights.

To test BlueControl, Philips teamed up with the University Hospital of Aachen in Germany. During the second of two clinical trials that spanned four months ending in June, patients showed an average reduction of 50 percent of symptoms based on a measurement system called Local Psoriasis Area Severity Index (PASI). The index measures the severity of psoriasis plaques in terms of thickness, redness and scaling. The trials also revealed that the blue LED lights produced no side effects.

Philips will present BlueControl at the European Academy of Dermatology & Venereology Congress, which takes place in Amsterdam between 8-12 October, before it goes on sale in The Netherlands, Germany and the UK.
