Low-Cost Space Travel From A Chinese Startup? Soon, Maybe

A company in China is planning to offer a low-cost near-space tourism service that would send people roughly 40 kilometers, or nearly 25 miles, above the Earth. Space Vision, a Beijing-based startup, wants to offer a more affordable way to send people into space, or at least into near-space, using a specially designed high-altitude balloon, which will begin testing next summer.

According to the South China Morning Post, Space Vision plans to send passengers up 40,000 meters, roughly 131,000 feet, inside a pressurized capsule that will be lifted by a large balloon filled with non-flammable, non-toxic helium. From that altitude tourists would reportedly be able to see views of the Earths curvature and the vast dark space that surrounds the planet. The capsule would then descend using a large parachute.

People would be able to experience a brief moment of weightlessness, but they would not be able to say they have been in space, technically: The U.S. government designates as "astronauts" people who have been at least 50 kilometers above the Earth. That's 25 percent more than the maximum altitude projected for the Chinese craft.

According to Xinhua News Agency, Space Vision priced one five-hour trip at about 500,000 yuan, or $81,000 per person, which would include training and insurance. Similar services offered in the U.S. from World View Enterprises cost $75,000 per passenger. While $75,000 is not a cheap trip, it is considerably less expensive than the offerings by other companies such as Virgin Galactic, which will take you up to 100 kilometers, or 60 miles into space for $250,000 on the SpaceShipTwo space plane.

The companys president, Jiang Fang, is confident in Chinas wealthy and increasingly adventurous citizens to help propel his business. Look around and you will find that we have plenty of potential customers in China who have enough courage, and wealth as well, Jiang told Xinhua.

Though Space Vision would be the first to offer space tourism services in China, laws and regulations regarding control of civilian air space and national security concerns will prove to be a challenge for the company. As a result, Jiang is calling on legislators to allow private space activities.

Space Center Houston Is Houston's First Smithsonian Affiliate

October Is Month of Historic 'Firsts' in Space HOUSTON, Oct. 8, 2014 - It's another first for Houston and Space Center Houston as the nonprofit museum becomes the first Smithsonian Affiliate in the city. The center celebrates a "month of firsts" by opening a new exhibition today about the first voyages into deep space.

The new status grants access to the national archive of more than 138 million artifacts, specimens and works of art, as well as entree to more than 50 traveling exhibitions developed by the Smithsonian Institution.

"We are delighted to launch our first Houston affiliate partnership with Space Center Houston, an organization that has done so much to honor and preserve the history of space flight," said Harold A. Closter, Smithsonian Affiliations director. "This new partnership builds on a solid foundation of prior collaboration, artifact loans and scholarly exchange and will address ways that we can work together to inspire a new generation to dream, explore, and further the boundaries of knowledge."

The national recognition and exposure for Space Center Houston is expected to increase annual visits, boosting the center's current $45 million annual impact on the greater Houston area. In addition, Houstonians can look forward to Smithsonian exhibitions and programs.

"Space Center Houston is proud to be the first Smithsonian affiliate in Houston," said Richard E. Allen Jr., president and CEO of Space Center Houston. "This is a result of our continuous dedication to preserving the unique history of space exploration and sharing NASA's bold vision to expand humanity's presence into deep space. The "month of firsts" launches with The Next Giant Leap: Beyond Planet Earth, presented by the City of Webster. This is the first exhibition of the center's "Next Giant Leap" 2014-15 season of educational programs and exhibits aligned with NASA's deep-space exploration initiatives.

October is the month of many historic firsts in space. During past Octobers, both NASA (1958) and Space Center Houston (1992) began operations and launches occurred of the first satellite Sputnik I (1957), the first NASA satellite Pioneer 1 (1958) and NASA's first crewed Apollo mission (Apollo 7, 1968).

For Red Arrow Int'l, Scripted Dramas Translate Into Event Programming

LOS ANGELES (Variety.com) - Recent years have seen a strengthening in the market for bigger-budget drama that can serve as event programming for broadcasters. Red Arrow Intl. is in the vanguard of that trend, with high-profile shows like "Roald Dahl's Esio Trot," "100 Code" and "Bosch."

"If you have a well-known cast, a great writer and showrunner, a program is on the road to becoming a successful event program," says Irina Ignatiew, who heads the company alongside fellow managing director Henrik Pabst.

The market has benefited from the entry of streaming services like Netflix, which licensed "Lilyhammer," and Amazon, which commissioned "Bosch." "The opportunities to create high-quality stories and formats are better than ever," says Pabst. "Since those new services are particularly reliant on attractive content in order to entice new subscribers, they are prepared to come up with serious budgets and are willing to invest in high-quality productions."

The rise of non-linear services, both pure streaming operators like Netflix and Amazon, and the ancillary services offered by traditional free and pay TV operators, has allowed new forms of drama to take root. In the crime genre, for example, with shows like "100 Code" and "Bosch," more time can be devoted to character and more complicated plotlines.

"The market has changed," says Ignatiew. "Theatrical talent is moving more and more into television, enabling us to tell stories in a more thorough and creative way. Procedurals with closed storylines don't allow for much character development, and now through serialization we are able to take a more cinematic approach to the storytelling."

Comedy can offer a challenge for distributors, but dramedies can be very popular, and have offered a rich vein for Red Arrow Intl. to mine. Steven van Zandt starrer "Lilyhammer," which has sold to more than 150 territories, provides a telling example. "Every country has its own sense of humor; therefore, a broad and universal appeal is key to its success," Ignatiew says. "With 'Lilyhammer,' this works very well, and Steve van Zandt's hilarious fish-out-of-water performance makes it must-see TV."

Red Arrow Develops a 'Taste' for What Stands Out in Reality

LOS ANGELES (Variety.com) - Unscripted shows form a major part of the Red Arrow Intl. slate with a wide range of gameshows and reality formats on offer. One of its biggest hits is cooking show "The Taste," which has sold to more than 80 territories as either a taped show -- which is produced for ABC in the U.S. and stars Nigella Lawson and Anthony Bourdain -- or a format.

The market for cooking-show formats is very competitive and to be successful, shows need a twist, such as the blind audition on "The Taste." "Midnight Feast," another cooking show on the slate, also features a twist: Competitors are in a closed food hall where they can use every ingredient, but if they lose they foot the bill.

"What I believe makes 'Midnight Feast' stand out is its combination of reality, cooking and competition all set on location away from the studio," says Henrik Pabst, who heads Red Arrow Intl. alongside Irina Ignatiew. "This gives the show a much younger and fresher feel, which is often missing in more traditional cooking programming."

An emerging unscripted trend is social experiment reality shows. Red Arrow Intl. has two such programs: "Married at First Sight," in which single folk wed strangers selected by experts; and "Escape Your Life," where couples are offered a chance to reinvent themselves.

"In the end it is about the idea," says Pabst. "It is about what it looks like. It's about whether the viewer can jump in at any time and play along."

Prepare to learn more about Red Band Societys resident scary bitch, Nurse Jackson. Octavia Spencer has teased big reveal in season 1, episode 7!

Tonights episode of Red Band Society will mainly focus on the kids, who attend the Homecoming dance at Kara (Zoe Levin)s high school.

But the adult characters are getting more storylines soon. Last week Nurse Kenji (Wilson Cruz) made an offhand comment about the life Nurse Jackon gave up in order to work at the hospital, and in episode 7, well explore the characters past.

Speaking to TV Line, Octavia Spencer reveals, Were actually filming a big Nurse Jackson reveal [in] episode 7.

What could that be? Was she an actress or a singer, perhaps?

Whatever it is, she doesnt bring her private life to work, Spencer says. Luckily, we get to follow her home. The hospital is a huge part of her life, but theres a whole different part that were going to unveil.

As for tonights episode, expect to see sparks flying between Emma (Ciara Chota) and Leo (Charlie Rowe) and Kara?!

True friendships are revealed, Spencer teases. Emma gets to go to her first dance, and its Karas homecoming, so therell be sparks flying there. Are they both out for Leos heart?

Red Band Society season 1, episode 4 recap: We need to talk about Emma

Last nights episode of Red Band Society featured a homecoming dance, the worst mother in the world, and some questionable decision-making.

Red Band Society season 1, episode 4 aired last night. In this recap we discuss all the different storylines, and ask the questions that need to be addressed.

Kara (Zoe Levin)s storyline this episode was pretty straightforward, and yet revealed something new about her personality (although it still doesnt make much sense).

In an attempt to get back to normalcy, Kara goes back to high school for the homecoming party, where she intends to remind people of her fearsome existence.

Instead she is treated like a homecoming hero; all her former enemies now love and pity her, and she has to accept the homecoming queen crown while sitting in a wheelchair.

Earlier that evening, Kara explained to Leo (Charlie Rowe) that she hated the attention; she didnt want to be pitied, she wanted to be feared. Understanding this, Leo jumps onto the stage to interrupt the false celebration of her, throwing insults at Kara we now know she doesnt only deserve, but also actively seeks out.

This revelation is somewhat reassuring for viewers who have been scratching their heads at Karas behaviour. What she says and does is not born out of some misguided attempt to be popular, and she doesnt actually think its acceptable; Kara is, for some reason, actively pursuing being a legitimately bad person who it is impossible to like.

Its nice to know that theres a reason for her behaviour, though when the revelation of why she wants to be hated comes, its probably going to be something predictable like, love is easy to lose, but fear you can control. Well see.

Damn, Leo is one insightful teenager.

At the beginning of the episode Leo is flashing back to his soccer playing days. Hes been contacted by a scout from Stanford who wants to see him play, and as he explains to Nurse Jackson (Octavia Spencer), he wont be able to attend college without a scholarship.
