Bitcoin and Taxes, Now Unavoidable

If you dont know anything about the Bitcoin market, know this: you can use the digital currency as a form of payment on sites like Overstock.com, Amazon, and even Victorias Secret.

Bitcoin demand is very real. In fact, the digital currency is so popular that the Internal Revenue Service decided to get involved.

In March, the IRS made its first major ruling on digital currencies, including Bitcoin. The agency ruled that digital currencies are not actual currency but rather a form of property and, as such, are susceptible to capital gains tax. Naturally, this decision was met with feelings of anger and curiosity. But for the average Bitcoin enthusiast one important and very practical question surfaced: How on earth am I going to pay my taxes?

I had a chance to speak with Jake Benson the founder and CEO of LibraTax an online accounting software company that helps individuals prepare their Bitcoin taxes.

Who is using Bitcoin?

Benson:More and more people believe in digital currencies as a technology and Bitcoins as a representation of that technology.Very large and reputable companies such as PayPal are now enabling Bitcoin as a payment rail for digital goods.Granted, some users are still crypto-anarchists, libertarians, and criminals, but overall, the digital currency market is evolving quickly and becoming much more mainstream.

Last year the IRS ruled that Bitcoins are considered property and not currency. How will this impact the Bitcoin market and taxpayers in general?

Benson:The immediate knee-jerk reaction was a disaster. How on earth are people going to keep track of all their trading activity? Bitcoins are now considered a form of property so you need to apply capital gains tax to every single transaction you make, no matter the size. Whether you are using Bitcoins to buy a cup of coffee or buy a house, you still need to log that transaction. Its seemingly impossible to keep these records manually, and there can be a lot of math involved in calculating the right tax.

WEST LIBERTY, Iowa It was a game-saving drive for the moment.

After giving up three second-quarter touchdowns, the West Liberty High School football team was able to cut the deficit to 14 at the end of the first half and received to open the second half.

The Comets would have their chances later in the game, but struggled to execute and fell to West Burlington/Notre Dame 28-7 in a Class 2A District 5 contest on West Libertys homecoming night.

We had some turnovers with our offense that kind of led to some scores, West Liberty co-head coach Jason Iske said.

The Falcons (3-4, 2-2 Class 2A District 5) were led by running back Isaiah Trousil, who finished with nearly 160 yards rushing. Quarterback Brant Wrede passed for 145 yards and rushed for 58 more.

Give them credit, they definitely have good kids in the skill positions, Iske said.

West Liberty (0-7, 0-4) quarterback Cooper Koenig passed for a little more than 100 yards while Joe Baker and Sam Weaver combined to rush for nearly 60 yards rushing.

In the second quarter, West Libertys Noel Palma intercepted a Brant Wrede pass with 11:46 left in the half, but the Comets gave the ball back on the following play as Xavier Williams intercepted Cooper Koenig and brought it back 65 yards for the first score of the game.

The Comets were forced to punt on their next possession and the Falcons added to their lead when Trousil was able to break away for a 36-yard scoring run to make it 14-0.

West Liberty immediately turned the ball over again on a pitch attempt and WB/ND took advantage once again when Williams hauled in a 10-yard pass from Wrede.

Clayton's Hoy excels on both sides of the ball

CLAYTON, N.C. -

Eric Hoy has played a position or two for the Clayton Comets.

"Quarterback, running back, wide receiver, cornerback," he said. "Also, safety, linebacker and long snapper, and punter."

But it's his current position of quarterback that seemed to catch him by surprise.

"Coach just asked me, 'Can you throw the ball son?' " Hoy explained. "And I was like, we'll see. So we went outside one day and started throwing and just got the position from there."

Hoy can throw it. He's passed for more than 1,000 yards while adding 700 rushing yards for the Comets.

Last year, Hoy rushed for a 1,000 yards from his running back position. Moving a successful runner to quarterback, though, was an easy decision according to Clayton head coach Randy Pinkowski.

"If you're going to run that style of offense, the quarterback has to be an athlete," Pinkowski explained about the Comets multi-set attack.

"We knew Eric could go back there and be successful basically because he's moved around the field and played a lot of positions well," Pinkowski said.

Even though Hoy is playing quarterback, that hasn't kept him from being on the field on the other side of the ball.

Fighting CP through stem cell therapy

Can brain damage caused during birth be ever reversed? Is it possible to repair the damaged brain tissues among children, who suffer from Cerebral Palsy (CP)?

So far, the treatment option for CP is to manage the symptoms of the ailment. However, in recent times, scientists and researchers worldwide have started to explore stem cell therapy as a potential treatment option for CP patients.

Can stem cells reverse the brain damage, which is the sole cause for CP among children? Our research on over 100 CP patients and stem cell therapy has been very encouraging. The patients, who underwent stem cell therapy, have displayed huge improvement in CP symptoms, says Professor and Head of Neurosurgery, LTM Medical College, Mumbai, Alok Sharma.

The neurosurgeon, who is taking part in an international conference on CP in Hyderabad this weekend, said that doctors are not concentrating on treating the brain damage.

The current treatment options available to help patients are only to mange symptoms and nobody tries to repair the underlying damage to the brain tissue. Therefore, developing a standard therapeutic approach for CP through stem cells is the need of the hour, he said.

The results from the stem cell therapy on CP patients conducted by Dr. Aloks team were recently published in Neurogens chapter on Stem cell therapy for cerebral palsy A Novel Option in a book titled Cerebral Palsy Challenges For the Future. According to the neurosurgeon, the patients after therapy had improvements in their speech, balance, upper and lower limb activity and movement.

While for stem cell research, many prefer cord blood banking, Dr. Alok pointed out that they have used stem cells from the adults derived from the bone marrow. The transplanted stem cells have the ability to migrate to the area of the damaged tissue in the brain and home-in on those affected areas to help repair the damage. Stem cells release substance that stimulates natural growth, which decreases the process of damage of the brain, Dr. Alok explained.

The researcher, who has started NeuroGen Brain and Spine Institute in Mumbai to conduct stem cell research, pointed out that stem cell therapy and other rehabilitation programmes should be encouraged for the benefit of CP patients. The positive changes that we recorded in our patients were not just restricted to their symptoms but also constructive change in brain metabolism observed through PET-CT scans, he explained. From 9-10 October 2014 around 200 scientists met at the Leipzig Fraunhofer Institute for Cell Therapy and Immunology for the ninth Fraunhofer Life Science Symposium. Held every two years, this year the event focused on the theme "Medicinal Cell Products and Stem Cells for Medicinal Applications". In recent years biomedical research has revealed numerous promising new approaches for the prevention and treatment of serious illnesses. The issue of stem cells plays a key role in this. With the symposium the Fraunhofer IZI offers international scientists a platform on which they can discuss the latest developments in this field.

The scientific program encompasses three major subject areas: production, manufacture and application. In the first section a paper presented by Sarah Ferber (Centre for Stem Cells, Regenerative Medicine and Tissue Engineering, Sheba Medical Center, Tel Hashomer, Israel) was one major point of interest: "Reprogramming the endocrine pancreas; autologous cell replacement therapy for diabetic patients". She spoke about the possibilities for transforming liver cells into insulin-producing cells. In the future this method could possibly be used to help patients with type 1 diabetes, where the misdirected immune system destroys the body's own insulin-producing beta cells of the pancreas.

The Fraunhofer Life Science Symposium brings together up to 200 participants from academic and clinical institutions to discuss the various focal points concerning new technologies, trends and developments. Four UCLA Scientists Receive Prestigious Innovator Award for Pioneering Research Using Stem Cells

Newswise Four scientists from the Eli and Edythe Broad Center of Regenerative Medicine and Stem Cell Research at UCLA have received a National Institutes of Health (NIH) Director's New Innovator Award that will forward revolutionary stem cell and neuro-science in medicine. The four UCLA researchers were among only 50 scientists nationwide to receive the New Innovator Award, the most of any institution represented.

Each recipient received a $2.3M award for their respective projects. These included Dr. Reza Ardehali, assistant professor of cardiology, for his research investigating novel ways to use stem cells to regenerate heart tissue; Dr. Elissa Hallem, assistant professor of microbiology, immunology and molecular genetics, for her work studying interactions between animal parasites and their hosts to foster the further understanding of human parasitic diseases; Dr. Sririam Kosuri, assistant professor of chemistry and biochemistry, for his project developing new biological system technologies to solve outstanding problems in gene regulation; and Dr. Lili Yang, assistant professor of microbiology, immunology and molecular genetics, for her work developing a new method to track special immune cells for use in new cellular therapies.

"These New Innovator Award grants are an important acknowledgement of our cutting-edge research and will help our faculty drive the revolutionary advances we are seeing in stem cell and neuro-science," said Dr. Owen Witte, professor and director of the Broad Stem Cell Research Center. "Every cellular therapy that reaches patients must begin in the laboratory with novel ideas and experiments that will lead us in new directions in medicine and ultimately improve human life. That makes these awards invaluable to our research effort."

The NIH Director'sNew Innovator Award is designed specifically to support unusually creative investigators with highly innovative research ideas at an early stage of their career. The award seeks to support exceptionally creative new scientists whose research complements ongoing efforts by NIH.

Dr. Reza Ardehali: Unlocking the Secrets to Regenerating Heart Tissue

Dr. Ardehali's cutting-edge work focuses on both human embryonic stem cells and induced pluripotent stem cells, known as human pluripotent stem cells (hPSC), to provide insights into the mechanisms involved in the differentiation and specification of heart cells. hPSC have the unique ability to become any cell type in the body. His lab recently identified several novel surface markers that can highly enrich early cardiovascular progenitor cells. When delivered into functioning human hearts that are transplanted in laboratory conditions, the progenitor cells integrate structurally and functionally into the host myocardium. These studies established the basis for future hPSC-based cardiac therapy.

Dr. Ardehali and his colleagues were also the first to directly measure limited division in the cells that make up heart muscle (cardiomyocytes), proving that cardiomyocytes divide and that such cell division is rare. This discovery resolves an important controversy over whether the heart muscle has the power to regenerate and is critical for future research that may lead to regenerating heart tissue to repair damage caused by disease or heart attack.

His 2013, California Institute for Regenerative Medicine (CIRM), the state's stem cell research agency, New Faculty Physician Scientist Translational Research Award allowed Dr. Ardehali to initiate the preclinical studies on stem cell based therapies for heart disease that were pivotal for his success in the 2014 New Innovator Award competition. The NIH grant affirms the critical success of the project-to-date, and emphasizes the creativity of Dr. Ardehali's research and its potential to have a significant impact on the creation of novel regenerative approaches to treat heart disease.

Ojai shops reflect the town's artistic soul

Ojai, a scenic little agricultural city, has for the better part of a century lured individuals pursuing spiritual enlightenment and artists seeking inspiration and calm. Now a new crop of makers and merchants is traveling the 90 miles north of Los Angeles to bask in Ojai's groovy, quirky sensibility while introducing contemporary tastes and broader aesthetic points of view. Fortunately, this fresh retail mix meshes with Ojai's long-standing supportive community of art galleries and independent boutiques. Most of the shops are clustered on or near the main drag of Ojai Avenue.

Carolna Gramm

Given that the town vibe can evoke a patchouli-soused era, it might not seem an obvious destination for an Italian-raised former model who starred in a Chanel No. 5 commercial directed by Ridley Scott in the 1980s. And yet Carolna Gramm has felt at home in this city of 8,000 for 13 years. While managing the Regalo Extra Virgin Olive Oil Tasting Room, which she has filled with accessories culled from her own collecting and interior design work, she opened her own shop, Carolna Gramm, in the historic Spanish Colonial Revival arcade on Ojai Avenue. "I can't let antiques go. I need to be surrounded by things," she explained.

P Space

Ojai's open-mindedness allows a range of styles to flourish. At P Space, graphic designer and former CalArts professor P. Lyn Middleton sells her one-of-a-kind serving platters, dishes and other ceramics that feel both earthy and modern. Master potter Larry Carnes completes Middleton's asymmetrical pieces in his high-fired gas kiln down the road. The bright storefront, shared with an architecture firm, is east of the arcade and in front of Hip Vegan Caf, which makes wraps filled with tempeh, beans and vegetables; salads and bowls; and juices and teas.

Modern Folk Living

Also in the spirit of cooperation, Middleton's goods are mixed in among the irresistible displays at Modern Folk Living. Wanda Weller Sakai, previously director of design for Patagonia, creates what she describes as a "digestible" retail environment nestled within an erstwhile Buddhist center meditation room. Sakai's tastes favor eco-sensitive and domestically produced accessories, including boldly graphic hand-painted ceramics from Kat Hutter and Roger Lee of Los Angeles' Mount Washington neighborhood, candles from Le Feu de L'Eau, and pillows emblazoned with feather and arrow motifs from Coral & Tusk, along with clothing.

Tipple & Ramble

Around the corner on North Montgomery Street, Sun Goldsteen transformed a cooking school into Tipple & Ramble, a "hybrid space" stocked with household and food-oriented accouterments: flatware, Turkish towels, patterned virgin wool blankets from Mexico and oversize pillows covered in vintage Pendleton blankets and made by Goldsteen. Customers soon will be able to lounge in Acapulco chairs from Aniceto Polanco in Compton and dine at Granada Tile-topped tables that Grayson Beckner crafts in Ventura when Goldsteen launches wine-and-cheese service and pop-up dinners in the smartly appointed alfresco area.
