Comets Visit Jones Elementary School 10 15 14

WESTPHALIA, Mo. A thrilling game came to an exciting end with a game-winning single off a Blair Oaks bat. Unfortunately for the Lady Falcons, it was in the hands of Fatima leadoff hitter Leah Kesel.
Kesel, a senior, is in the process of buying a bat from Blair Oaks pitcher Payton Staggs, who plays with Kesel for the Missouri Stealth in the summer. Kesel still has to pay Staggs for the bat, but Kesel made Staggs pay Wednesday night, using the bright orange bat to hit a pitch thrown by Staggs to left-center for a walk-off single.
The Lady Comets claimed an 8-7 win against Blair Oaks in a Class 2 sectional game.
Just a half-inning earlier, the Lady Falcons rallied from down 4-3 to take a 7-4 advantage into the bottom of the seventh. The Lady Comets matched them, plating four runs of their own and sending the home crowd into hysterics.
Its just a rush of adrenaline, and I absolutely love the feeling, Kesel said.
It was the third hit of the day for Kesel, who also pitched, allowing five earned runs and striking out nine. She scored each of her first three trips to the plate.
Leah came through huge at the end something I know she can do, and she did it, Fatima coach Dana Scheppers said. Thats senior leadership right there, coming up to the plate knowing you can do it.
Kesel held Blair Oaks scoreless until the fifth inning, and she had three runs of support behind her. Michelle Barnhart scored Kesel in the first inning with a single in the third inning with a double. Kristen Boeckmann singled Barnhart home in the third as well.
The Lady Falcons erased the lead, however, with a three-run fifth. Carli Buschjost walked, Taylor Markway hit an infield single, Lauren Viessman drove in Buschjost with another single, and Jolie Duffner reached first on an error that allowed Markway and Viessman to score.
Before the inning ended, the Lady Comets took the lead right back. Kesel singled, Barnhart sacrified her to second, and Sammey Bunch singled her in. Morgan Brandt singled, Boeckmann walked, and Fatima looked poised to broaden its lead.

(WKTV) - A handful of Utica Comets left behind their hockey stick onFriday and hit the streets with the mayor to help keep the city clean.
The Quality of Life Sweep began at noon by the Parkway and the Comets joined later in the afternoon, even digging in their heels and pushing a broken-down care out of a yard. But the best part of the day, the Comets say, was talking to kids at Jones Elementary.
"I really enjoy coming to schools," said DustinJeffery, Utica Comets player. "I had a lot of teams and people that did that for us and it's people we look up to, and it makes an impact on the kids.So for us to go into the schools and connect with them that way, it's big.Doing the street sweeping, it's a cool task around the city, but the school visit really hits home."
The Quality of Life Sweeps happen weekly through November. Community members are welcome to join.

Bottom Line: Patients with moderate and severe psoriasis have the greatest likelihood of uncontrolled hypertension compared to patients without psoriasis.
Author: Junko Takeshita, M.D., Ph.D., of the University of Pennsylvania Perelman School of Medicine, Philadelphia, and colleagues.
Background: Psoriasis is a chronic inflammatory disease of the skin and cardiovascular risk factors, including hypertension, are more prevalent among patients with psoriasis compared to those patients without. Previous studies suggest that psoriasis, especially when it is more severe, is associated with an increased risk of cardiovascular events such as heart attack, stroke and death.
How the Study Was Conducted: The authors examined the effect of psoriasis and its severity (which was measured by affected body surface area) on blood pressure control among patients with hypertension. The study included 1,322 patients with psoriasis and hypertension and 11,977 controls with hypertension but without psoriasis.
Results: The authors discovered a "dose-response relationship" between uncontrolled hypertension and psoriasis severity, which means the likelihood of uncontrolled hypertension increased with severity of the skin condition. Hence, the likelihood of uncontrolled hypertension was greatest among patients with moderate and severe psoriasis. Patients with psoriasis were equally as likely to be receiving antihypertensive treatment as were patients without psoriasis. The likelihood of treatment did not differ by the severity of the psoriasis.
Discussion: "Adding to the currently limited understanding of the effects of comorbid disease on hypertension, our findings have important clinical implications, suggesting a need for more effective management of blood pressure in patients with psoriasis, especially those with more extensive skin involvement [greater than or equal to 3 percent of body surface area affected]."

Uncontrolled hypertension highest among patients with moderate-to-severe psoriasis
Researchers suspect inflammation is the common denominator
WebMD News from HealthDay

WEDNESDAY, Oct. 15, 2014 (HealthDay News) -- People with more severe cases of psoriasis may be at increased risk of uncontrolled high blood pressure, a large study finds.
Researchers looking at over 13,000 adults in the United Kingdom found that those with severe psoriasis were 48 percent more likely to have poorly controlled blood pressure, versus people without the skin condition.
The findings, reported online Oct. 15 in the journal JAMA Dermatology, confirm an association between psoriasis and cardiovascular health. But the precise reasons are not clear, and a cause-and-effect link was not proven.
"We still don't fully understand why we see a higher prevalence of cardiovascular risk factors in people with psoriasis," said study leader Dr. Junko Takeshita, a clinical instructor of dermatology at the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia.
But, Takeshita said, chronic inflammation could be a common denominator.
People with psoriasis develop thick, scaly patches on their skin that are often itchy or sore. Experts believe the problem arises from an abnormal immune system attack on healthy skin cells -- a reaction that causes chronic inflammation. Chronic inflammation in the blood vessels is thought to contribute to high blood pressure ("hypertension"), heart disease and stroke.

A couple of months ago I interviewed two key figures in Silicon Valley-based tech company Qnovo - a company thats at the forefront of mobile device battery technology. In short, by carrying out extensive research and gathering huge amounts of data on battery charging and life cycle behavior, Qnovo has developed both software and hardware-based methods of tackling one of the blights of modern mobile batteries, drastically reducing the time it takes for them to charge.
Perhaps more importantly, theres no long timescale involved here; the technology has already been picked up by major smartphone and chipset manufacturers and will be introduced next year. This is very real, its ready and its happening now. Equally as important, is the fact that the technology is very unobtrusive there are no large super-conductors or huge charging circuits or indeed special batteries to contend with.
In fact, the software version allows for significantly faster charging with standard smartphone batteries with no extra circuitry at all. Just some lines of code added to the operating system of a current smartphone can allow a Google Google Nexus 5, for example, to be charged from flat to 50% in less than 40 minutes, compared to nearly an hour and 20 minutes for a standard Nexus 5.
The hardware version allows for even more rapid charging but this needs minor physical additions to the Qualcom chipset that resides in most smartphones and tablets in order to achieve the significantly higher charging power. The new charging techniques that Qnovo has developed also boost battery longevity too.
The company has been kind enough to ship me a Google Nexus 5 with the companys software added using the popular aftermarket Android operating system Cyanogenmod and Ive used a 9W charger, which offers enough power to make use of Qnovos adaptations. You can see how quickly the phone charges in the time lapse video below. I used around 10% brightness on the Nexus 5 but switched all other features off if the phone was switched off, this would obviously lower the charge time further.
As you can see, charging to 50% takes less than 37 minutes twice as fast as the snail-pace 75 minutes for a stock Nexus 5. It reached 100 % in just 1 hour 53 minutes a good 40 minutes quicker than a standard Nexus 5 that takes just over two and a half hours. This is around a third quicker and this is just Qnovos software method the hardware implementation is apparently even faster.
These figures can make a huge difference to how usable our mobile devices can be and once the hardware implementation finds its way into smartphones and tablets next year, well see vastly improved charge times that could give you three times as much power from a 15 minute charge as conventional charging and six times that from charging via a USB port.
This could go a long way in the battle to make our devices last longer, especially if you often forget to charge your smartphone. You can read my full interview with Qnovo about its battery charging technology here and let me know in the comments if faster charging would be useful to you.

Knee arthritis 2.5 years after stem cell therapy by Harry Adelson, N.D. - Video
TUESDAY, Oct. 14, 2014 (HealthDay News) -- A new study is the first to show the long-term safety of embryonic stem cell transplants to treat human disease.
The research involved 18 people who received the transplants to treat forms of macular degeneration, a leading cause of vision loss.
The transplants, which restored some sight in more than half of the patients, appeared safe up to three years after the procedure.
The study, funded by a U.S.-based company called Advanced Cell Technology, was published Oct. 14 in The Lancet.
"Embryonic stem cells have the potential to become any cell type in the body, but transplantation has been complicated by problems," lead author Dr. Robert Lanza, chief scientific officer at Advanced Cell Technology, said in a journal news release. Those problems include the rejection of the transplanted cells by the patient's immune system, as well as the danger that the cells might spur certain types of cancers called teratomas.
A teratoma is a type of cancer that occurs when stem cells develop into multiple types of cells and form incompatible tissues that can include teeth and hair.
As Lanza explained, because of these issues, scientists interested in embryonic stem cell therapy have tended to focused on sites in the body that typically do not produce a strong immune response. The eye is one such spot.
In the new study, human embryonic stem cells were first prompted to develop into eye cells called retinal pigment epithelial cells. They were then transplanted into nine people with Stargardt's macular dystrophy, and another nine with dry atrophic age-related macular degeneration.
Patient outcomes were tracked for up to three years after transplant. No signs of either cancer-like cell growth (hyperproliferation) or immune system rejection were found in any of the treated eyes after a median follow-up of 22 months, and the only adverse events were linked not to the transplanted cells, but to the eye surgery or immune system suppression needed for the transplant.
Overall, 10 of the 18 patients said they had significant improvements in their vision, and this improvement was only seen in the eyes that had received the stem cell treatment.

Embryonic Stem Cell Therapy Shows Long-Term Effectiveness, Safety
SAN DIEGO (KUSI) - Macular degeneration is the leading cause of vision loss for people over the age of 50. Scientists have discovered a new therapy that may actually restore sight in those affected.
Scientists are excited not only because it worked, and helped some people see clearly again, but also because this study puts a focus on an new kind of stem cell therapy, using skin cells.
Macular degeneration causes a blurry or black area in the middle of your field of vision that grows over time, causing more sight loss.
There is no cure, but a new study published this week in the journal The Lancet, is giving patients hope.
Embryonic stem cells were turned into retinal cells and implanted into the eyes of 18 patients.
Vision improved for about half of them.
Dr. Andreas said, "This study was primarily to see if these cells would be safe, and the bonus was that some people started to see better."
Dr. Andreas Bratyy-Layal and Dr. Suzanne Peterson are stem cell scientists with the Scripps Research Institute.
They see this as a major breakthrough.
Although this sight study did do that, Dr. Peterson says labs around the country, including here in San Diego, are moving away from the practice.

Students feel spirituality gives them peace of mind
Mumbai, October 15:
Arjun Ranga, Partner of Mysore-based NR Group, maker of the Cycle brand of agarbatti, does not fear the huge task ahead of him - how to sell incense sticks to a generation that is constantly fed by the internet and social media. Spiritual hunger seems to come naturally to the youth of today, says Ranga.
There is an inherent belief in God, even among the youth. An increasing number of kids want to get back to their roots, insists Ranga, the third generation in the business that was started by his grandfather N Ranga Rao in 1948.
Survey
To understand the attitude of the younger generation towards spirituality, the maker of the Cycle agarbatti brand roped in research and marketing agency Hansa Research.
Students in the age group of 13 to 23, studying in colleges and schools spread across the city of Bangalore, were interviewed. The findings were startling. Most of the students believed that spirituality led to happiness, as it gave one peace of mind. They said being spiritual also helped one to be a better human being, and led to good things in life.
The main reasons cited for being spiritual were family beliefs, personal experiences and friends. The survey showed that most students, especially those in college, found spirituality to be widespread in their age group.
Observations
About 3/4th of the students surveyed said they prayed at least once a day, and participated fairly often in religious functions along with their family members. The survey showed that different students interpreted spirituality differently, while some said its a belief or a trust (20 per cent), others said it is a trust in God (23 per cent). It was also seen as giving peace of mind (15 per cent) something very personal to them (8 per cent).

She claimed to have found solace inspiritualityafter completing her last stint in rehab in 2013.
And Lindsay Lohan appeared to be searching for the answers to some profound questions when she hit London town on Wednesday night.
The Mean Girls star had taken to the stage in West End play Speed-the-Plow earlier in the evening but appeared in a rush to leave the Playhouse Theatre.
Boho-chic: Lindsay Lohan stepped out in a retro ensemble as she headed to the Chiltern Firehouse in Londo on Wednesday night
According to reports, she raced into her car and took a call, before allegedly growing emotional.
Her driver reacted quickly and grabbed a piece of paper from her bag and covered her face - without realising a cryptic message was scribbled on the back.
The note read: 'GOD after death? Think!!!'
Despite the profound statement, Lindsay appeared to put her philosophical musings on hold later in evening when she headed to her favourite haunt in the capital, Chiltern Firehouse.
