Topeka attorney defends abortion provider's killer in First Amendment case
Scott Roeder, imprisoned for the murder of Wichita abortion provider George Tiller, is awaiting a Leavenworth County judges ruling over whether the Kansas Department of Corrections wrongly disciplined him after concluding he threatened another abortion provider.
Roeder is represented by Topeka attorney Billy Rork, who said he thinks the department violated Roeders right to freedom of speech.
Rork said Friday he is working free of charge to represent Roeder, an acquaintance since they were teenagers, who wrote him a letter asking for his help. Rork said he took the case mainly because Im a big First Amendment guy.
Rork appeared on Roeders behalf at a Sept. 2 Leavenworth County hearing before Judge Dan K. Wiley, who has yet to rule in a civil suit Roeder filed last year against the corrections department. Court records show attorney Sherri Price represented the KDOC at the hearing.
Roeder, 56, is an inmate at Ellsworth Correctional Facility. He was sentenced to life imprisonment without the possibility of parole for 50 years after being convicted of first-degree murder in the May 31, 2009, shooting death of Tiller, one of the nations few late-term abortion providers. Tiller was attending church in Wichita when Roeder shot him point-blank in the forehead. Roeder also was convicted of two counts of aggravated assault after he pointed the gun at two other men in the church.
The Associated Press reported Roeder was being held last year at Lansing Correctional Facility when the corrections department disciplined him after concluding he made threats of violence against a different Wichita abortion provider during a telephone interview with an anti-abortion activist. The activist put a recording of the call on YouTube.
The recording included discussion about how Julie Burkhart, executive director of the abortion rights group Trust Women, had opened a womens health center providing abortion services in the Wichita building Tiller used. Roeder could be heard saying it was death-defying for someone to reopen that clinic.
He added, To walk in there and reopen a clinic, a murder mill where a man was stopped, its almost like putting a target on your back saying, Well, lets see if you can shoot me.
The Associated Press reported Roeder was given 45 days in disciplinary segregation with no outside communication, followed by 60 days of loss of privileges and a $20 fine.
Rork said Friday that Roeder hadnt realized the activist was recording the conversation and would post it online.

Bitcoin 2.0 Crowdfunding Is Real Crowdfunding
Editors note: Sandrine Ayral has been involved in the Parisian startup ecosystem for a few years, working for startups, a VC fund and TheFamily, a startup accelerator. She joinedthe bitcoin sphere for good last February when she joined Coinbases remote team for a few months, and isnow working on a new cryptocurrency project.
In the past few months weve been hearing a lot about how bitcoins underlying technology is going to revolutionize not only our monetary system, but also notary services, DNS, authentication, intellectual property ownership and data storage.
While most of the products and services that were supposed to emerge on top of the bitcoin protocol have yet to see light, theres actually one application of the bitcoin protocol that has been developed by several bitcoin 2.0 startups: decentralized crowdfunding.
Kickstarter, Indiegogo and all the other traditional platforms act as the trusted third party that enablesa crowdfunding campaign. Thanks to them, a backer can feel confident that the money he sends to the platform for a specific project will be effectively sent to the selected project if the target amount of the campaign is reached or that the money will actually be sent back if the campaign fails. In exchange for his money, the Kickstarter investor gets access to a pre-order or T-shirts and other various goodies.
Crowdfunding platforms powered by blockchain technology remove the need for this trusted third party. They allow startups to raise funds by creating their own digital currencies and selling cryptographic shares to early backers. In more intelligible words, this means that investors in a crowdfunding campaign get tokens that represent shares of the startup they support and can actually benefit from the token value appreciation. You would never see an Oculus Rift situation with such crowdfunding platforms.
This is why the bitcoin community refers to bitcoin-powered crowdfunding as real crowdfunding. Enthusiasm around these projects is also tied to the fact that these platforms would be a real source of investment for other types of blockchain-powered applications and would help with the funding of bitcoin infrastructure.
Swarm, Koinify and Lighthouse are three decentralized crowdfunding platforms that have generated quite a buzz in the bitcoin community and actually received funding for their development in various forms.
Swarm used its own crowdfunding platform to raise funds in July and received $1 million from backers. The platform focuses on projects based on blockchain technology for now. It provides crowdsourced due diligence on each entrepreneur and team its platform backs to eliminate potential scammers.
Swarm just opened applications for the first five projects its platform will support, which will be presented at a demo day on November 5 in Silicon Valley. The company also soft-launched an incubator in Palo Alto to host bitcoin 2.0 projects: just like startup accelerators or incubators are a source for quality deal flow for a VC fund, building a bitcoin 2.0 incubator for Swarm seems like a smart strategy for the platform to spot interesting projects and encourage them to use its blockchain technology.
Another decentralized crowdfunding platform, Koinify, has just raised $1 million from IDG Partners, Brock Pierces AngelList syndicate and zPark Ventures to fund its development and build an easy-to-use interface. Koinify is focused on funding very specific projects related to blockchain technology and cryptocurrencies: decentralized applications, smart corporations, crypto infrastructure to make access to cryptocurrency easier.

ACT Comets all-rounder Vele Dukoski and spinner Shane Devoy did their chances of securing a professional contract no harm with standout performances in the Sydney Twenty20 competition.
Dukoski smashed 56 off just 38 balls while Devoy picked up 5-19 as the Comets made it a perfect two from two on Sunday with a 53-run victory against Blacktown.
That followed on from a four-wicket win against Penrith earlier in the day.
The Comets entered the tournament to give their players exposure and hopefully secure a deal with either the Sydney Thunder or Sixers for the upcoming Big Bash League.

Dukoski made the most of his chance to open the innings as the Comets posted 7-157 batting first, before Devoy took advantage of a pitch conducive to spin to restrict Penrith to 104 in reply.
Comets coach Mark Higgs said both players took their opportunity to impress.
"Vele's batted up the order at club cricket, and with Jono Dean out injured at the moment, we gave him a chance to do that for us," Higgs said.
"And with Shane, he got the ball in good areas, the wicket was turning a little bit and they came hard at him."

Yellow mustard for leg cramps and psoriasis

Your story led us to do some digging in the medical literature. A mouse study published in China demonstrated that when mustard seed was fed to rodents, it suppressed psoriasislike inflammation (Journal of Southern Medical University, September 2013). Japanese scientists concluded that the results of their research provide a basis for mustard seed to be used as a promising intervention for psoriasis in the future (Journal of Dermatology, July 2013).
Your husbands experiment with mustard appears to confirm the preliminary research carried out in animals. Thanks for sharing his experience. Perhaps others will benefit from his discovery.
Q: Your column mentioned using pineapple or banana skin as a topical treatment for plantar warts. The treatment of choice (unfortunately not well known among family doctors or even dermatologists) may be the daily topical application of vitamin A.
Vitamin A can be bought in capsules in any drugstore. Puncture a capsule of the vitamin with a sharp needle. Each day, squeeze a drop or two of the vitamin A oil out of the capsule onto the wart and rub it in well.
Dr. Robert Garry reported 100 percent success within five months in 50 consecutive patients (New England Journal of Medicine, Oct. 14, 2004). I likewise had success with this treatment for a very stubborn plantar wart, although mine required applying the vitamin twice a day to get results.
No side effects have been reported. It just requires stubborn persistence.

The real space oddity, Chris Hadfield, is down-to-Earth
NEW YORKWhat do you do after youve achieved the ultimate goal of your avocationnot once, but three times?Thats the question facing Chris Hadfield, who capped 25 years of NASA service by commanding both the International Space Station and an audience of millions on YouTube and Twitter. Hadfield gave a partial answer recentlyduring a public talk at the American Museum of Natural History: get as many people as possible to understand the experience and try to use that to keep the public supporting a program of space exploration.
Hadfield may be an unassuming looking manhes got nothing like the imposing build of astronaut and former football playerLeland Melvinbut you dont get sent to space three times without having an imposing set of talents. He saidthat, in addition to the expected job skills, he spent time in a Texas emergency room, stitching up and intubating people as part of the preparations to handle anything that might come up while in space. And millionssaw his musical and photographic skills on display since.
Hadfield took the audience on a single trip to space, stitched together from the three he took. He switched back and forth among them to find the most compelling story (the Shuttle starred for liftoff, Soyuz for landing). As part of this theatrical trip, he brought astronauts back down to Earth and off the pedestal we sometimes place them on. When discussing what meal should start a day that would end with him either floating weightless or dead, he said he was told eat something creamy, because youre going to be seeing it again the same day. And you might as well make it colorful. The additional advice? Add some catsup.
The first items of NASA-issued launch clothing Hadfieldhad to put on were a pair of black socks and what he called a big boy diaper. The less-than-imposing image was made complete by the fact that Johnson & Johnson used to put pink and blue astronauts on them at the time.
By the time he was ready to be put into his flight suit, however, he was in the same room where some of his heroes, Armstrong and Aldrin, sat in the same chairs. And as Hadfieldwas driven out to the Shuttle, he watched everyone else driving away, fleeing the impending explosion that would hopefully end up controlled and pointed in the same direction.
Hadfield provided a great description of getting to orbit, noting that going up isnt good enough, because youd simply fall down the way you came. Instead, you have to also move sideways fast enough that you perpetually fall down over the horizon. That means reaching a speed of five miles a secondfast enough to make it from New York to LA in nine minutes.
In the Shuttles case, that means having access to something like 80 million horsepower, burning 12 tons of fuel a second. Some of that came from the solid rocket boosters, which he said you cant shut off and cant throttle. When they get lit, youre going somewhere, thats for sure. The main engines, in contrast, are very smooth. Once they're above the atmosphere, they can generate so much acceleration that they have to be throttled down to avoid tearing the Shuttle apart.
Its amazing, but Hadfield wasnt impressed. Its a stupid way to get to space. Were going to look back 100 years from now and think what a stupid thing.
Weightlessness also had its prosand cons. This talk would be way more fun if we were all weightless, Hadfield said before describing its liberating effects, including its tendency to liberate your lunch. Youd do a thousand summersaults and then everyone would throw up. Weightlessness even adds an interesting twist to that. NASA provides standard-issue barf bags, but without gravity to hold the contents in them, the barf actually hits the bottom and rebounds right back out. So the bags come equipped with a cloth to clean your face off afterwards.
Hadfield talked about the packed schedule of scientific experiments that astronauts run through on the International Space Station, showing pictures of experiments in progress. As an example, he shared how a flame burns in low gravity (hot air cant rise, so theres no convection, and flames end up oxygen starved). Hadfieldalso discussedhis two space walks, showing video of his first exit from the station. That clearly shows him stopping to soak in the sight of it all while halfway out the airlock. The world on one side, the bottomlessness of the Universe on the otheryoure in the Universe with the world.
