New Bitcoin exchange launches in Sydney

The hype around digital currency Bitcoins continues to defy the expectations of investment professionals as another Australian-based exchange opens today, promising to give investors faster trading access than ever before.

Bitcoin company, Independent Reserve, has launched the country's newest exchange, based in Sydney. It is understood there are now two in Australia.

Unlike the two main Australian-based stock exchanges, Independent Reserve is not regulated by the Australian Securities and Investments Commission, which means the company has had to take investor protection into their own hands.

"Price Waterhouse Coppers are auditing all of our finances," said the company's chief executive Adam Tepper.

"We are trying to mitigate risks to ensure people think their money is safe and secure. We have done everything we could possibly do to minimise risk to our clients," he said.

The Australian Taxation Office ruled in August that Bitcoin, which trades uses mathematical code, is a commodity, not a currency and people who transact using Bitcoins will have to pay goods-and-services tax on the Australian dollar value of the transaction.

Independent Reserve said it will not charge GST on the funds sold through its exchange.

Wild fluctuations in the price of a Bitcoin - which is currently trading at $US380 and was once as high as $US1000 - as well as heightened level of risk and lack of formal regulation are often cited by professional investors as the reasons why they will not invest in the digital currency.

Convincing banks about Bitcoin is 'challenging'

People would read about Bitcoin and think how do we buy some. They would Google it and we were the first result, co-founder Brian Armstrong told the Telegraph. We want to make Bitcoin easier to use. We tried to just make it super-simple.

The company claims to have the largest market share of online wallets, 24 per cent - a claim disputed by competitor Blockchain.info, which unlike Coinbase counts each individual wallet as a user, despite many people having more than one.

Coinbase wont release exact figures but Armstrong confirms that it looks after hundreds of millions of dollars worth of Bitcoin.

Originally launched in the US, it recently announced that it had secured banking and regulatory approval to launch in Europe, opening its services up to 18 new markets. But the UK was not among them.

The main hurdles for it to enter a new market are banks and regulation. You cant set up in a country unless Bitcoin payments are legal, and you cant handle business unless you can get a bank account. And they are struggling to get a UK bank account.

Even though many people see Bitcoin as undermining the two institutions of big finance and government, which in a sense it does, it is also beholden to them - at least, it is if you want a legitimate, easy-to-use, commercial payment system.

Getting banks on board is challenging, admits Armstrong, who points out that there are no British lenders currently offering accounts to Bitcoin startups. In other markets it has taken six months of meetings just to get them comfortable.

These banks are usually quite sceptical. Thats a hard, difficult process that involves a lot of meetings, he says. Coinbase hopes to launch on these shores soon. We have to be patient. It could happen in a week or ten years, he adds.

Europes retailers are lagging behind the US with Bitcoin adoption, but Coinbase hopes to grow the number of wallets here over the next six months and using that to convince shops of the benefits of taking crypto-currencies. Thats the same play book it followed in the US.

If our work pays off, itll be happening, says Armstrong.

Mustard for leg cramps and psoriasis

Published: Tue, October 21, 2014 @ 12:00 a.m.

Q. My husband is disabled by osteoarthritis and psoriatic arthritis. He experienced frequent muscle cramping and was eating extra yellow mustard for relief.

His psoriasis was treated for years by a dermatologist. After a few weeks of taking large amounts of mustard, he noticed his psoriasis was greatly improved.

After his muscles stopped cramping, he stopped eating mustard. His psoriasis started returning. He has now resumed taking mustard this time for psoriasis.

A. Many readers have reported that a teaspoon or two of yellow mustard eases leg cramps, but you are the first to suggest that this condiment might be helpful for psoriasis.

Your story led us to do some digging in the medical literature. A mouse study published in China demonstrated that when mustard seed was fed to rodents, it suppressed psoriasislike inflammation (Journal of Southern Medical University, September 2013). Japanese scientists concluded that the results of their research provide a basis for mustard seed to be used as a promising intervention for psoriasis in the future (Journal of Dermatology, July 2013).

Your husbands experiment with mustard appears to confirm the preliminary research carried out in animals. Thanks for sharing his experience. Perhaps others will benefit from his discovery.

Q. Your column mentioned using pineapple or banana skin as a topical treatment for plantar warts. The treatment of choice (unfortunately not well known among family doctors or even dermatologists) may be the daily topical application of vitamin A.

Vitamin A can be bought in capsules in any drugstore. Puncture a capsule of the vitamin with a sharp needle. Each day, squeeze a drop or two of the vitamin A oil out of the capsule onto the wart and rub it in well.

Dr. Robert Garry reported 100 percent success within five months in 50 consecutive patients (New England Journal of Medicine, Oct. 14, 2004). I likewise had success with this treatment for a very stubborn plantar wart, although mine required applying the vitamin twice a day to get results.

The world's biggest travellers – which nationality takes the most trips?

Everyone knows Australians love to travel, but a new study has found that we're not the biggest travellers in the world and that we still prefer domestic trips to international ones.

A new survey by business consulting firm Timetric has found that northern Europeans are the world's biggest travellers, with four Nordic countries all in the top five. US travellers were also in the top five, but their travels were dominated by domestic trips. Norwegians were the biggest international travellers, taking an average of two international trips per year.

Several factors were found to explain why people from Nordic countries travel so much. These included relatively high incomes and low unemployment, as well as the high cost of living in these countries - which makes travelling to a cheaper foreign destination an attractive proposition. Escape the tough winter climate was also cited as a reason many Scandanvians and Finns will head abroad.

According to the results, the world's top 10 biggest travellers are:

1. Finland

Finland is the most well-travelled country in the world, with the average Finn making 7.5 trips a year, including stays at home and abroad.

2. United States

The US has the largest domestic travel market in the world, with national holidays bumping up the average person's number of trips to 6.7 a year. However, international travel is very limited, with only 1 out of 5 Americans going abroad in 2013. Fewer than half of Americans own a passport.

WYSTC 2014 Conference Sends Clear Message That Youth Is The travel Industry's Fastest Growing Sector

Last month over 650 leading youth travel professionals from more than 120 countries gathered in Dublin for the 23rd World Youth and Student Travel Conference, WYSTC 2014.

One of the key themes underpinning the leading global youth, student and educational travel event, which was held at the Convention Centre Dublin, was the sheer power of youth travel. With its performance critical to the future trajectory of global travel, the message echoed by all speakers was that tourism's fastest-growing sector needs to be fully embraced.

In his opening speech, David Chapman, Director General of WYSE Travel Confederation, said: "As the only global event dedicated to youth travel's development, WYSTC's success lies in its ability to encourage an entire industry to come together under one roof.

"Our research reveals that this lucrative market is now estimated at being worth over US$230 billion every year, with young people accounting for one in five international tourists and the spend by young travellers predicted to rise by 47% over the coming decade. The gathering of delegates from all corners of the globe serves as a reminder of the immense opportunities the booming youth market offers to the travel industry and visitor economies worldwide."

Recognising the value of the conference's educational sessions at previous WYSTC events, WYSE Travel Confederation boosted this year's programme to include over 30 stimulating seminars and workshops alongside pre-organised business appointments and daily networking events. These sessions were led by more than 40 prominent experts in their fields who were chosen to champion the latest thinking and leave delegates motivated to drive the youth travel industry forward.

Another theme which emerged from the educational programme was that, with young travellers known for being at the leading edge of change and innovation, it is vital that those catering for these early adopters of new technology ensure they stay ahead of social media and mobile trends.

As such, WYSTC 2014's high-profile speakers included Skyscanner's Filip Filipov, whose opening keynote session on the future of travel encouraged attendees to consider how new technologies and artificial intelligence will come together to change travel experiences over the next decade. He was complemented by Sir Ranulph Fiennes, the world's greatest living explorer who has made a career out of encouraging young people to challenge themselves, who delivered the inspiring closing keynote address.

As he welcomed attendees to the conference, Chapman reminded delegates that the socio-economic benefits for the young traveller are just as important to consider, a point that was reiterated by the UNWTO's Carlos Vogeler who joined him on stage. Vogeler said: "Never before have so many people travelled to so many places to explore and engage. The focus for these globally-oriented citizens is to get to know the true culture and the people who make a destination what it is."

Before Filipov's presentation, Paschal Donohoe - the Republic of Ireland's Minister of Transport, Tourism and Sport - stressed how instrumental overseas experiences can be in shaping future societies and why Ireland is looking to support the youth travel sector as a destination.

He explained: "We [Ireland] are a small, open and changing country where all our young people spend time abroad, whether through necessity or choice and all bring back valuable experience. My trip to America as a younger man gave me an appreciation of the importance of gaining an understanding of other cultures and the nature of globalisation is that there are now more ideas spreading across the world in a day than used to happen in a year."

StemGenex New Clinical Study Aims to Provide Relief to Osteoarthritis Patients through Latest Stem Cell Therapy

La Jolla, CA (PRWEB) October 21, 2014

StemGenex, the leading resource for adult adipose stem cell therapy in the US aimed at improving the lives of patients dealing with degenerative diseases today announced their newest clinical study in partnership with Stem Cell Research Centre for Osteoarthritis. StemGenex and Stem Cell Research Centre (SCRC) believe that a commitment to the safety and efficacy of stem cell therapy are paramount when providing care to patients with life threatening diseases.

There are currently 21 million people in the U.S. alone, who suffer from Osteoarthritis. The most common symptoms are joint pain and stiffness which most commonly affect the neck, lower back, knees, shoulders and hips. These symptoms gradually worsen over time ultimately leading to the need for a total joint replacement procedure. StemGenex believe their new clinical study may provide patients improved mobility, significantly reduced pain and ultimately a better quality of life without needing joint replacement surgery.

This clinical study makes stem cell therapy for osteoarthritis accessible to the millions of individuals currently struggling with this painful disease. The protocol used in these stem cell treatments is unique to StemGenex and SCRC, having the possibility of being more effective than other stem cell treatments currently available. These treatments will utilize a multiple administration method which also includes injections precisely targeting the joint space. StemGenex believes these treatments may be able to keep patients from needing joint replacement surgery in the future, due to regeneration of cartilage in the joint.

This clinical study will be conducted under the leadership of the principal investigator,Dr. Jeremiah McDole, Ph.D. Dr. McDole states, We are excited to begin enrolling for this new study. We have high expectations for what we will learn and what advancements can ultimately be implemented. Of course, our focus is always set toward the near future and what can be done to help improve the lives of those individuals with Osteoarthritis.

This study is registered through The National Institutes of Health which can be found at http://www.clinicaltrials.gov and is being conducted under IRB approval of Stem Cell Research Centre (SCRC). There are many patients who are exploring stem cell therapy for osteoarthritis and it is important they have access to top-tier stem cell therapy. By providing patients access to stem cell studies registered through The National Institutes of Health, patients now have the ability to choose treatment that focuses on both safety and efficacy.

Rita Alexander, founder and president of StemGenex stated With so many people suffering from Osteoarthritis its absolutely wonderful to provide a treatment that has not only shown efficacy but also to be minimally invasive. Over the last several years we have observed significant improvement in the symptoms of Osteoarthritis patients through stem cell treatment. Through these registered clinical studies, we will now be able to publish our findings over the next few years.

This clinical study follows on the heels of StemGenex latest clinical studies for both Parkinsons disease and Multiple Sclerosis. Stem cell treatment studies are currently being offered by StemGenex partnering with Stem Cell Research Centre (SCRC) to patients diagnosed with Osteoarthritis as well as degenerative neurological diseases. StemGenex takes a unique approach of compassion and empowerment while providing access to the latest stem cell therapies for degenerative conditions including Multiple Sclerosis, Alzheimers disease, stroke recovery and others.

Newswise A 26-year-old woman paralyzed after a motor vehicle accident a year ago has successfully undergone a first-in-human experimental procedure to test whether neural stem cells injected at the site of a spinal cord injury is safe and could be an effective treatment.

The procedure, conducted on Sept. 30 under the auspices of the Sanford Stem Cell Clinical Center at UC San Diego Health System and in collaboration with Neuralstem, Inc., a Maryland-based biotechnology firm, is the first of four in the Phase I clinical trial. Post safety testing, its hoped that the transplanted neural stem cells will develop into new neurons that bridge the gap created by the injury, replace severed or lost nerve connections and restore at least some motor and sensory function.

The patient, whose identity remains confidential for privacy reasons, has been discharged and is recovering without complication or adverse effects at home, said Joseph Ciacci, MD, principal investigator and neurosurgeon at UC San Diego Health System.

The spinal cord injury trial is one of three recent ground-breaking stem cell efforts at UC San Diego, supported by the Sanford Stem Cell Clinical Center, to make the significant leap from laboratory to first-in-human clinical trials.

Last month, researchers at UC San Diego Moores Cancer Center and the Sanford Stem Cell Clinical Center launched a novel Phase I trial to assess the safety of a monoclonal antibody treatment that targets cancer stem cells in patients with chronic lymphocytic leukemia, the most common form of blood cancer.

And later this month, the first patient is scheduled to receive an unprecedented stem cell-based therapy designed to treat type 1diabetes in another Phase I clinical trial at UC San Diego.

What we are seeing after years of work is the rubber hitting the road, said Lawrence Goldstein, PhD, director of the UC San Diego Stem Cell program and Sanford Stem Cell Clinical Center at UC San Diego Health System. These are three very ambitious and innovative trials. Each followed a different development path; each addresses a very different disease or condition. It speaks to the maturation of stem cell science that weve gotten to the point of testing these very real medical applications in people.

To be sure, Goldstein said, the number of patients involved in these first trials is small. The initial focus is upon treatment with low doses to assess safety, but also with hope of patient benefit. As these trials progress and additional trials are launched Goldstein predicts greater numbers of patients will be enrolled at UC San Diego and the Sanford Stem Cell Clinical Center and elsewhere.

On a spiritual odyssey

THE HINDU Alice from Taiwan, Helen from Malaysia and Moon and Theresa from China, are on a four-day visit to West Godavari district in pursuit of spiritual knowledge. Photo: A.V.G. Prasad

The rich Indian culture and spirituality has cast a spell on a four-member foreign delegation. Alice from Taiwan, Helen from Malaysia and Moon and Theresa from China, who were on a four-day visit to West Godavari district in pursuit of spiritual knowledge, were overwhelmed by the local temple architecture and rituals.

The grandeur of the Sri Chennakesava Ramalingeswara Swamy Temple at Sanivarapupeta and its imposing Rajagopuram, dating back to the East Chalukyan era, left the delegation awe-struck. They spent time on the temple premises doing meditation and learning about the design and history of the Rajagopuram, which is under renovation. Helen, the team leader, said the team would also visit Dwaraka Tirumala, the abode of Sri Venkateswara Swamy.

They were also drawn towards Sri Sri Ravi Shankars Art of Living Foundation. Helen said she had been a messenger of the foundations guiding principles of love and peace for the last three decades.

Moon and Theresa said Sri Sri Ravishankars message of universal love had helped them transcend all barriers to remain united with people across the globe. After all, love knows no colour, race, religion and frontiers. We are trying to take it to people all over with all the warmth, Helen said.

The team visited villages such as Ammapalem, Ankannagudem and Chodimella and mingled with the rural folks, while language failed to be any barrier. India is a great source of spiritual knowledge. Dont go out to seek it out elsewhere. It is very much here only, within your doorstep, the team said.

Does Being 'Spiritual But Not Religious' Really Mean Anything?

"Spiritual But Not Religious" is a phrase you hear more and more these days and with good reason. In 2012, a Pew Foundation survey on religion found that almost 20 percent of Americans placed themselves in the category of "unaffiliated."

That 20 percent unaffiliated translates into a whole lot of people. It's a big enough number that, most likely, your next airport van ride will include someone without traditional religious attachments onboard.

But to really appreciate the importance of this 20 percent in the landscape of American life, you have to consider one more number: 10 years.

That's how long it's been since philosopher Sam Harris published his book The End of Faith and kick-started the New Atheist movement. Along with writers like Richard Dawkins, Christopher Hitchens and Daniel Dennett, Harris was unapologetic in his denunciation of literalist religious beliefs.

Looking back, New Atheism was at its best when it provided a clear defense of reason against the many fundamentalisms that only look backward. At its worst, however, it dismissed all experiences of "spirituality" as worthless, pudding-headed confusion.

For persistent readers, however, Harris's now decade-old book held a surprise. In the last chapter, this fiery critic of religion argued that real spiritual experience was not only possible, it was a kind of birthright. I remember getting to that last chapter and thinking, "Whoa, what just happened?

What happened was Harris, like many in the 20 percent, had always found meaning in experiences of personal spirituality. Those experiences now take center stage in Harris's latest book Waking Up.

Harris's first step on this new journey is to give up being squeamish about language. As he writes:

"... I will use spiritual, mystical, contemplative and transcendent without apology. However, I will be precise in describing the experiences and methods which merit those terms."

Next, he tells us why these experiences matter: "Spirituality begins with a reverence for the ordinary that can lead us to insights and experiences that are anything but ordinary."

How ALIVE are you? 4 spiritual teachers help you find out

Divorce. Death. Disease. Doubt.

Its lifes heavy stuff that sends us on the journey inward.

For some its the search for purpose. For others its a desire to solve lifes mysteries.

For me, the journey inward began several years ago, when I realized that anger was subconsciously controlling me.

So, I turned to books like Gary Zukavs Seat of the Soul and Eckhart Tolles The Power of Now. They helped me realize that any problems I have begin and end with me.

And in August, I headed to Estes Park, Colo., to join 700 other seekers of enlightenment at Sounds Trues Wake Up Festival, a five-day event thats like a convention for soul searchers.

Soul-searching has become big business these days, with Oprah Winfrey out on her Life You Want Weekend tour, where attendees pay up to $999 to have an aha moment with Ms. O.

Some of Oprahs favorite life trailblazers like authors Elizabeth Gilbert (Eat, Pray, Love) and Mark Nepo (The Book of Awakening) shared wisdom at the Wake Up Festival.

Heres a sampling of what we learned
