Nutrition Programs In Region-6 Hailed

ILOILO CITY - The Region-6 office of the National Nutrition Council (NNC-6) has cited outstanding nutrition programs in Western Visayas.

The NNC-6 disclosed that Jordan town in the island province of Guimaras was named as the 2011 Outstanding Regional Green Banner Award during the 2012 Western Visayas Nutrition Congress held in this city last December 4.

The towns of Lezo in the province of Aklan, and Bugasong in the province of Antique were also given the 2011 Municipal Green Banner Awards.

According to Nona Tad-y, NNC-6 regional coordinator, the awards recognized programs of local government units (LGUs) to curb malnutrition incidence among young children in conjunction of the Philippine Plan of Action for Nutrition 2011-2016.

While incidence rate of undernourishment has dropped in 2011, the NNC-6 found more than 75,000 undernourished pre-school children in the provinces of Aklan, Antique, Capiz, Guimaras, Iloilo, and Negros Occidental.

The NNC-6, an attached agency of Department of Health (DOH), also awarded outstanding barangay (village) nutrition scholars (BNS) in the provincial, city and municipal levels.

Cherill Reyes of Numancia in Aklan was awarded the 2011 outstanding regional BNS in Western Visayas.

Other outstanding provincial BNS were Liezel Orendain of Antique, Alejandra Igbacol of Guimaras, Magdalena Panes of Iloilo, and Flordeliz Dionora of Negros Occidental.

Outstanding city BNS awardees were Rizalyn Madrilino of Bacolod, Layda Bugto of Cadiz, Monina Loberas of Kabankalan, Magdalena Panes of Passi, Mary Grace Abelarde of Sagay, Ruth Pagonzaga of Sipalay, Norafe Demontao of Talisay, and Julie Tanutan of Victorias.
