Baguio nutrition scholar second best in country

BAGUIO CITY officials congratulated Monica Sicat of City Camp Proper last Monday for bagging second place as the Best Barangay Nutrition Scholar among 38,000 barangay nutrition scholars nationwide.

Sicat was declared first runner-up with a P70,000 cash prize awarded by President Benigno Aquino III and was given a laptop by Agham party-list representative Angelo Palmones in a recognition program at the Philippine International Convention Center last November 9.

Mayor Mauricio Domogan, who accompanied Sicat in the awarding, said Sicats award is a triumph for the citys campaign against malnutrition.

He also congratulated the Baguio Health Departments nutrition division who helped choose Sicat among more than 100 barangay nutrition scholars in the city.

The award was given by the National Nutrition Council for the top performers in nutrition program implementation, exemplary contributions in nutrition program management and delivery of nutrition services for 2011.

The National Nutrition Evaluation Teams led by Assistant Secretary of Department of Health and NNC executive director Maria Bernardita Flores visited Baguio last August 24 to validate Sicats performance and also validated around 25 local government units vying for various national nutrition awards.

The last leg of evaluation included the validation visits to the top eight Barangay Nutrition Scholars who bested more than 38,000 BNSs nationwide.

The evaluation was comprehensive with actual weight validation of selected preschool children and BNS assessment through written examination. Throughout the day long evaluation, support was also given to the Barangay Nutrition Council headed by City Camp Proper village chief Aurora Abellera.

The 2011 National Outstanding Barangay Nutrition Scholars (BNS) award went to Lina Guerrero of Barangay Concepcion of Kabasalan, Zamboanga Sibugay. She received P100,000 cash prize, a trophy and a scholarship grant from Agham party-list.

Meanwhile, the second runner up is Ma. Digna Tayong from Barangay Mainit, Nabunturan, Compostela Valley receiving P50,000. All top eight BNS finalists each received a netbook computer, also from Agham Partylist.
