Dr. L. David Kuykendall explains the importance of nitrogen to the plant. Dr. L. David Kuykendall is a Consulting Senior Scientist working with ABM in the development of microbiological technologies. His professional career has spanned more than 36 years, 25 of which with the USDA as a Senior Research Scientist Earning a PhD in Microbiology in 1976 at the age of 23, Dr. Kuykendall has authored 107 scientific journal articles and book chapters. David Kuykendall PhD (LDK) Consulting Senior Scientist to ABM Let me Describe the importance of nitrogen to the plant. The plant needs nitrogen to grow. Because nitrogen is an essential component of amino acids and proteins and pyrimidines and purines in nucleic acid. Without nucleic acid and proteins there is no life. So the plant has 2 choices: it can get nitrogen from the soil, if its present. or it can interact with a symbiotic bacterium such as Bradyrizobium Japonicum as soybean does to get lots of nitrogen from the air in an inexpensive, biologically, environmentally friendly way.
