The drive from Dunedin to Christchurch is interesting since the road follows the coast line. Our hotel in Christchurch was the Charlotte Jane a luxury Bread and Breakfast. After the long drive we decided to have dinner at the adjoining restaurant. The meal was excellent such that we decided to have dinner there the following night. Again we had our walking shoes on trekking into the downtown.

Bug Bites Boring Buses Bastard Burglars
20310I told a massive lie in my last post. 20 hour bus journeys can be hell. From Mancora to Otavalo we had to get on 3 different buses. The first 3 hour bus to the border of Ecuador involved no leg room and no air conditioning in temperatures well over 30 degrees. Then we got off the bus got on what looked like a dodgy taxi and headed to our next bus. At least this one had air condition but yo
A little surfing in Panama
Joce After reworking our original plans a bit we decided to spend a bit more time in the central American countries surfing and then quickly return via the much shorter east coast of Mexico as opposed to the lengthy west coast which took us 3 weeks. This we decided left time for a couple of days surfing around here. We took the RV down to playa Venao and had a really nice surf. There must
More engine troubles and delays
The RV ran fine to the oil change place so we decided it was time to pack up and go. We said our goodbyes loaded up and we were off. She ran alright for awhile but when we reached los santos started complaining as before. The difference now was that we weren8217t even on a hill and it was much more frequent stuttering. We stalled on a flat road outside the Mcdonalds in Chiquiri. Well we ne
Week of Anticipation
I'm sitting at the Villa Coffeehouse in Idaho Falls trying to figure out how to write a blog entry. So I guess this is my first if it works. If entries seem disjointed at first bare with me. For anyone who doesn't know about my endeavor I am flying to London on March 31st to start my three month trek across Europe. 1 month in France 1 month in Italy and 1 month split up between Croatia S

Queenstown Feb 3rd to 6th 2010
I love New Zealand the scenery the people even the twisty and narrow roads the only one thing that I would change would be the addition of air conditioning. Our hotel in Fox Glacier was without and so is our hotel in Queenstown. The temperature in Fox Glacier was 27C and in Queenstown it is 30C. Queenstown is a charming tourist friendly town with lots of restaurants and easy walking around th
Time for planning
Time for planningYesterday I went to a travel agency in Stockholm which specializes in travels to Japan. My goal was to purchase a voucher for a Japan Rail Pass. The rail pass is vaild for 7 days and will let me travel throughout the island country for a set price. Right now I have only planned a trip from Osaka to Tokyo but the price for the pass is lower than buying a regular train ticket betwee
It’s official spring has sprung
It has been another interesting week here. Various boats have come and gone indicating that Hatchet Bay is gaining in popularity. We have met some very nice people who are not on boats including an author from the UK. We have been very lucky to able to share in her company and will miss her when we all move on as we must all do at some point. March 20 there was a pig roast to attend. What
Good Day Sunshine
Yeah so I kind of copied Alex and used a song title for this post but it was unusually bright out today. And much like the song today was very good. Today we only had to go to one class thanks to some very skillful schedule manipulation on the part of the two Seoras thank you. Our group had a Castellano class a bit like Literature and I think the other group had an English class but Im
Te Anau Dunedin Feb 6th to 10th
Lake Te Anau is the second largest in New Zealand however the weather quickly turned from being close to 30C to around 20C with a good wind the next day. We used our time in Te Anau to do some walking and just relax. Dunedin has a Scottish heritage and happens to be the oldest city in New Zealand. In our entire New Zealand journey I guess that the odds are that you will have at least one bad h

It seemed to take forever but I arrived at my hotel in Athens very pleased that i had only to walk accross the road to a hot shower and a good sleep. Next morning saw me swimming in the hotel pool overlooking Athens. Waited at the wrong gate for my flight to Vienna but they kindly called me oops sorry other travellers. The view was amazing and look forward to seeing it in full daylight when i fly
Kebili An old abandoned village and the heart of the Saharan slave trade
From Tozeur we had intended to make our way up the Western edge of Tunisia. Our experiences of taking louages and other forms of public transport in remote areas put us off somewhat. Instead we abandoned those plans and headed back over the Chott El Jerid salt lake to the town of Kebili. We stayed in the Hotel Kitam on the Northern edge of town. We were the only guests and it was rather more expens
Housing in Haiti
HiI'm doing a project about temporary housing after natural disasters and looking at the earthquake in Haiti. I was just wondering what sort of housing was there before Like how many rooms in a typical Haitian home what are bedrooms and beds like what are the toilets like how big are the houses Just an overview of normal accommodation standards from anyone who's been there would be so hel
Perfect Sunset
Last week we had a perfect sunset
Spring Break and Legoland
Spring break has started and the camp ground was full last weekend. Weekdays are mostly full. We were prepared for calamity chaos and wildly drinking teens. It didn't happen but our work has increased lot. The biggest change is the number of little kids recklessly riding their bicycles. My son was very slowly backing out of a parking spot at our site and almost hit one when the kid drove by
Fox Glacier Feb 1st to 3rd 2010
Shortly after checking in we booked a helicopter flight to fly over the Fox and Franz Josef Glaciers and to land on the upper portion of the Fox Glacier. Although Mare and I were in shorts and golf shirts we were warm due to the strength of the sun. Interesting that when we threw snowballs at each other the other helicopter passengers just stared. The ash on the snow is from the fires in Austral

Bob Dylan helped define a generation’s revolution – one that Leslie Engle thought had passed her by as she was growing up. In “real time”, it had, pure and simple. Fortunately, through educating, volunteering, cooking, and embracing everything Lao, she has found her own personal “revolution” and is enjoying every second of it all.
