The Role of Travel and Tourism Lauded by G20 Leaders

LOS CABOS, Mexico, June 22, 2012 /PRNewswire/ -- The G20 world leaders have, for the first time in history, recognized the critical role travel and tourism has in fuelling job growth and economic development. It also included a commitment from leaders of the G20 nations to promote initiatives which facilitate more efficient immigration procedures thus expanding tourism.

The Leaders' Declaration G20 Leaders Summit held in Los Cabos, Mexico, states implicitly that: "we recognize the role of travel and tourism as a vehicle for job creation, economic growth, and development, and, while recognizing the sovereign right of States to control the entry of foreign nationals, we will work towards developing travel facilitation initiatives in support of job creation, quality work, poverty reduction, and global growth."

Mexico's Secretary of Tourism, Gloria Guevara said that the inclusion of tourism on the agenda of the G20 Leaders' Summit represented an unprecedented breakthrough for the enhancement of thetourism industry globally.

Taleb Rifai, Secretary General of United Nations World Tourism Organization (WTO) referred to this as a "significant success" for the global tourism industry and he applauded the efforts undertaken by the Calderon Government in advancing the tourism industry, particularly the inclusion of tourism as an item on the agenda of the G20.

Secretary-General Rifai said, "We commend and will support the G20 leaders who have recognized the importance of travel and tourism as an engine of economic growth and job creation."

David Scowsill, President and CEO of the World Travel and Tourism Council said, "Following the successful T20 (Tourism Ministers of G20 countries) last month, which was chaired by Secretary Gloria Guevara, President Felipe Calderon received a declaration on the importance of travel and tourism as a generator of jobs. He then took this declaration to the G20 meeting in Los Cabos, which was the first time that this sector has been discussed by the world's leaders."

Scowsill added, "World Travel & Tourism Council (WTTC) would like to congratulate President Calderon and Secretary Guevara for their leadership and their focus on the industry, underlining its potential to create new jobs in such difficult economic times. Mexico has been leading the world in marketing the beauty of the country, and in making changes to visa policies to encourage more inbound tourists."

Kirk Kinsell, Director of the Board of Intercontinental Hotels Group (IHG) and President of the Americas, participated in the delegation to Mexico led by Prime Minister of the United Kingdom David Cameron commented that, "for the first time tourism has been discussed in a G20 Leader's Summit. Tourism has a key role in the global economy and if we could remove certain barriers, the industry could generate at least 5.1 million additional jobs by 2015. "

Last month the Tourism Ministers of the G20 nations and the European Union converged on the Yucatan for the 4th Meeting of Tourism Ministers (T20) and forged the "Merida Declaration" a policy proposal submitted to the G20 Leaders which suggests implementing streamlined procedures for obtaining visas so as to boost tourism internationally.

Research by UNWTO and WTTC, released at the T20 Tourism Ministers Meeting last May, indicated that the G20 group of nations could boost their international tourist numbers and generate over 5 million jobs.

Budget Travel: Travel News From Around The World

THE CHINESEhave again begun lowering the value of their currency, the Yuan, to bolster their rapidly declining export industry and their incoming tourism. (ADRIAN KORTE)

The most important recent travel news has been about currency rates, and has to do with a considerable decline in the worth of (A) the Chinese Yuan, and (B) the euro. Violating every promise, the Chinese have again begun lowering the value of their currency to bolster their rapidly declining export industry and their incoming tourism. If the Yuan continues to lose value at its current rate, China will become an even greater bargain than before. (What's bad news for the world's economy is good news for the tourist.) And have you looked at the euro lately? It's recently selling at $1.23, and although airfare to Europe is high, the cost of living once there is declining. You might want to reconsider your decision to avoid a trans-Atlantic trip this year.

CHINA ON BUS

The other big news has been the move by the Department of Transportation to put 26 so-called Chinatown bus companies out of business because of alleged safety violations (unlicensed drivers working too many hours a day, poorly maintained buses). Left untouched were such apparently reliable firms as BoltBus and MegaBus, and you might want to keep those names in mind for your own next trip in the Northeast and the Midwest (a very few also operate in the far West), where Chinatown buses (so named because they usually drive from one Chinatown to another) offer fares as low as $10 per one-way trip.

SENIOR SECURITY

Also making travel headlines: A recent decision by the Department of Homeland Security to permit people over the age of 75 to keep their shoes on and avoid pat-downs, if they also are willing to undergo swabs with a chemically treated cloth that detects traces of explosives, as multiple passes through an electronic security gate. The new rule is an experiment only, in only four airports (including that of Orlando), and I hope it doesn't represent an unwise surrender to anti-TSA hysteria.

PFDs

I'm also seeing a great deal of Internet comment about the lack of sufficient life preservers and other safety equipment on ferries and tourist boats. Too often, travelers blithely sign on for brief seagoing excursions, unaware that they will be in danger if the boat or ferry capsizes or sinks.

BARGAINS TO CUBA

I recently wrote about the decision of YMT Vacations to offer air-and-land packages to Cuba, including eight nights of accommodations, for $1,999 plus $299 in taxes and fees. I should have added a phone number for booking the bargain: 800-922-9000. FriendlyPlanet.com comes in second with an eight-night program selling for $2,799.

Volunteers prepare for World Choir Games

About 15,000 participants from 64 countries and 22 U.S. states will travel to Cincinnati July 4-14 for the 7th World Choir Games.

More than 200 public events are highlighted by a performance from Grammy-winning gospel star Marvin Winans and the Cincinnati Pops Orchestra during the Closing Ceremony at U.S. Bank Arena.

The Games will kick off with an opening ceremony July 4 at Great American Ballpark.

This event will be the first World Choir Games held in the United States. The games are held every other year, and will be in Riga, Latvia, in 2014.

The Parade of Nations co-Grand Marshals are Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductee Bootsy Collins and Mayor Mark Mallory.

To get the final touches right, 1,200 volunteers got the scoop Tuesday night on how to greet and care for the thousands of visitors from overseas.

"I think everyone realizes they're going to be the face of the games. They're going to be the ones to interact with the visitors and some of the choirs. They're going to make a great experience for all the people coming here," said Michael Perry, a promotions worker for the 2012 World Choir Games.

The badges to get into the performances are ready to be passed out and many Cincinnati residents said they're excited for the event.

17-06-2012 11:00 - RTW travel video adventure Interesting story about how this interview came about. On Wednesday last week I decided I would like to do a story on Korean Ginseng after reading about it's benefits on the internet. So I put out a message on South Korean Facebook and couch surfing groups. Within 10 minutes someone replied to me on Facebook with a contact from the USA, the son of Shi Keum, the chairman of the Korea Ginseng Association. Only problem was Mr Keum did not speak English, so I needed a translator. I put out a call for anyone wanting to help with translation on couch surfing and that day Minji took up my offer. This is the english version of the interview with Mr Keum, with Minji providing translation ( I will upload the Korean version also) We discuss the health benefits of Ginseng, why Korean Ginseng is considered the best in the world, what varieties of Ginseng are available, such as Red and Mountain Ginseng, how Ginseng can be taking and who should take it. This coming Wednesday I will be visiting the Geumsan province, which is the main area where Ginseng is grown to film how Ginseng is farmed and manufactured. JETSET Travelworld, the travel company partly owned by Qantas, will axe about 110 jobs partly due to increased federal government bookings of travel online rather than over the phone.

The travel retailer, whose brands include Harvey World Travel and Qantas Business Travel, warned yesterday that its pretax profit this financial year will be less than the $30.7 million it reported in 2010-11 due to one-off restructuring and impairment charges.

Although Australians are still travelling overseas in record numbers, Jetset's chief executive, Peter Lacaze, said leisure travellers remained cautious, forcing companies to discount tickets.

''We are doing more work for less money. Plenty of people are travelling, but they are paying less for each airfare,'' he said. ''But the price discounting in international air fares has probably gone as far as it can. We have seen some firming in prices in May and June.''

Jetset warned several months ago that March and April trading conditions were weaker than expected. Mr Lacaze said yesterday that conditions in May and early June were better, but ''our circumstances are like a lot of businesses with exposure to retail''.

Most of the pain from the latest restructure will be felt by those working at its travel management division, which will lose about 66 of the 110 jobs to be cut. Jetset has had to automate its travel management division to satisfy a contract with the federal government, meaning it does not need as many staff to handle bookings over the phone.

About half of the government's bookings are now done online following attempts to reduce its large travel budget.

Other jobs to be axed are mainly in the wholesale travel businesses, which are the final parts to be integrated following Jetset's merger with Stella Travel Services in 2010.

Cuba Tours and Travel To Lead Special December 2012 Trip To Havana International Jazz Festival

LONG BEACH, Calif., June 18, 2012 /PRNewswire/ -- Cuba Tours and Travel, a fully licensed Cuba Travel agency, announced today that the company will lead a special trip to the 28th edition of the extraordinary Havana International Jazz Festival, to be held December 12-19, 2012.

For nearly three decades, the big names of world Jazz have performed on Havana stages during this grand music celebration. Dizzy Gillespie, Max Roach, Carmen McCrae, Michel Lengrand, Charlie Haden and Chucho Valdes all have wowed adoring crowds under the balmy Havana night sky.

"That's the majesty of the Cuban super-virtuosos: They play with a technical brilliance that has no real equivalent, but they undergird their work with African percussion rituals that stand at the very root of their jazz (and ours)." Howard Reich, Chicago Tribune

This year will bring more of the same, as major concerts take place amid the city's wonderful architectural gems and hot Latin Jazz flows from clubs, restaurants, bars, and public spaces while warm Caribbean tradewinds sweep this historic UNESCO site for world Heritage.

This fully legal trip is aimed at making the experience affordable for American musicians, music teachers, musicologists, music producers, music publishers and other music professionals working in non-commercial sectors.

"Your participation with authentic Latin jazz and Cuban music is enhanced by being in one of the world's most vibrant and exciting cities," said Adolfo V. Nodal, a partner at CTT. "Havana is your oyster as you enjoy concerts, master classes, late night music sessions, architectural tours and a trip to the countryside."

Recent changes in the U.S. Treasury law governing travel to Cuba has made it possible for professionals in these fields to travel to Cuba without many of the previous licensing impediments that were faced before.
