Malta at World Travel Market 2012

Malta has been very prominently represented at the World Travel Market (WTM), the leading global event for the travel industry under the auspices of the Malta Tourism Authority (MTA). WTM is a vibrant must-attend four-day business-to-business event, presenting a diverse range of destinations and industry sectors to UK and international travel professionals. By attending WTM, participants gain immediate competitive advantage for their business and stay abreast with the latest developments in the travel industry.

The MTAs stand provided an opportunity for a number of Maltese hotels, destination management companies, operators and agents to exhibit at this leading industry event at the ExCel Exhibition Centre in London, from 5- 8 November 2012. The MTA also held key, high level meetings with leading operators, led by the Minister for Tourism, the Environment and Culture, the Hon. Mario de Marco.

MTAs UK & Ireland Director, Mr Alex Incorvaja said that notwithstanding a continued challenging trading environment in Britain, our meetings at WTM have given us extremely positive indicators. Furthermore, current year-to-date figures show that Malta continues to perform positively with the prospects of another record year set.

On 6 November, the High Commissioner of Malta, Mr. Joseph Zammit Tabona hosted a reception at the official residence in collaboration with the MTAs office in London. Amongst the invitees were leading members of the Maltese and international travel industry, consumer and trade press, with the Minister for Tourism, the Environment and Culture as guest of honour.

The High Commissioner said that: This is an exciting time for Maltas tourism with promoting Valletta as the European Capital 2018 and the governments initiative Eco-Gozo. The latest additions to Maltas cultural calendar include the first Valletta International Baroque Festival in January and the National Museum of Fine Arts international exhibition project celebrating the work of renowned artist Mattia Preti. It gives me great pleasure to see Malta showcased at its best.

Minister seeing as many industry players as possible at World Travel Market

Gibraltar is exhibiting at the World Travel Market (WTM) being held at the Excel Exhibition Centre in London from 5th to 8th November. The event is one of the largest gatherings of the travel and tourism industry and the Gibraltar Tourist Board (GTB) is exhibiting alongside industry partners from Gibraltar.

The Tourist Boards stand provides an exhibition and meeting place for some of those involved in the tourism industry in Gibraltar, to present their products and services to the travel trade and to benefit from the resources provided at the event for all involved.

The Minister for Tourism, Public Transport and the Port, Neil Costa, is visiting the exhibition and has a packed schedule of back-to-back meetings during the event.

The Minister will be giving interviews to the Travel Weekly publication and for the Holiday and Cruise Television Channel and is meeting with a cross section of tourism industry providers.

Mr Costa was at the official opening ceremony and reception and will participate in the Tourism Ministers summit being held at the event.

On Tuesday evening, he attends the WTM Ministerial Dinner in association with the World Tourism Organisation (UNWTO) and Visit Britain at Mansion House.

On Wednesday, Minister Costa will present the Best Destination for Architectural Heritage Category as part of the Virgin Holidays Responsible Tourism Awards, which takes place on the WTM World Responsible Tourism Day in Association with the UNWTO.

He said, We are at the World Travel Market this year, primarily on an evaluation basis, to see if the event is worthwhile and in tandem, to try and make it work harder for Gibraltar. This year, I have ensured that I see as many industry players as possible, including current tourism partners. I am also encouraging the co-exhibitors to make the most of all the resources that thevenue and event have to offer. There is no doubt that as a major tourism event the WTM is important but our attendance at these events must yield results. If we see that this years event produces tangible results for the destination and if the industry partners also report this to be so, we will consider re-visiting the event in the future.

Minister Costa is accompanied by the Chief Executive of the GTB and the stand is managed by the team from Gibraltar House in London.

Euromonitor's WTM Global Trends Report Identifies Emerging 2012 Travel and Tourism Trends

LONDON, Nov. 5, 2012 /PRNewswire/ -- The World Travel Market Global Trends Report 2012( http://blog.euromonitor.com/2012/10/download-the-wtm-global-travel-trends-report-2012.htm ) has been released today, November 5, at the World Travel Market, the leading event for travel and tourism worldwide. The report highlights the nine key emerging travel and tourism trends worldwide, looking at how the global, regional and national political, social and economic situation is shaping the travel industry.

(Logo: http://photos.prnewswire.com/prnh/20121105/573139 )

Americas: The Attraction of Forbidden Lands

Since 2010, countries previously off-limits to American tourists have become open; benefiting economically from tourism revenue. Caroline Bremner, Head of Travel and Tourism Research at Euromonitor said, "It's a small but growing market. Most US visitors to previously banned countries are expected to come from the Baby Boomer generation."

Europe: BRIC's Grand Shopping Tour

Brazil, Russia, India and China are embracing shopping tourism in key European destinations. Dynamic economic growth has led to rapidly increasing disposable income levels in these countries. Together with increased awareness of an improved quality of life, consumers from BRIC countries are keen to spend more on travel.

Middle East: Rise of Shopping Hotels

Big spenders with cash are driving the trend for Middle Eastern hotels built inside shopping malls. Wealthy consumers from Bahrain and Saudi Arabia have disposable income and love shopping, thus mega-malls in the Middle East are booming. Shopping malls and associated hotel developments are key elements in the recovery of tourism, which saw a difficult year in 2011.

Africa: Destination Nollywood

Nigeria's massive film industry, dubbed Nollywood, is the world's second largest film industry in volume terms, after India's Bollywood and ahead of Hollywood, with more than 2,000 films produced annually. The increasing popularity of Nollywood in many African countries will be a major growth driver with the leisure sector attracting film fans.

Celebrity Travel: Leila Janah is a social entrepreneur is a world traveller to developing countries

There is no place where poverty has to exist best sums up Leila Janahs world view.

As founder and CEO of Samasource a non-profit microwork organization which connects people in developing countries with companies that require small computer-based jobs performed as well as Samahope, which uses crowd sourcing to fund surgeries for women and children in poor countries, Janah logs a lot of miles.

The Harvard grad and social business entrepreneur, who previously worked at the World Bank and as a management consultant, likes to travel light. Unless shes carrying medical supplies or other important cargo, Janah never even checks a bag. Its a trick she learned as a student, writing for the Lets Go travel guides, in Brazil, Borneo, the Philippines, Mozambique and Malawi.

The tech-savvy 30-year-old, who sits on a number of boards, also recently partnered with Canadian bootmaker Sorel for its Get Your Boots Dirty campaign featuring women entrepreneurs.

We caught up with the Buffalo native at her home in San Francisco.

Q: Youve been to over 80 countries; have you estimated how far youve travelled over the years?

A: Well over a million miles, I would say, (but) I tend to go, go, go and not take stock.

Q: Do you have a favourite place to visit? Is there one thats stood out?

A: Just one? There are so many I love Haiti: Port-au-Prince. Its an incredible city and people are scared to go there or think its really poor; it is quite poor but it is an incredibly rich city culturally.

You have the old French Colonial architecture and a lot of Latin influences from the Dominican Republic, which shares the island with Haiti. And the people there have been through so much; theres resilience and this sense of faith that permeates the culture there that I find really interesting.

World Travel : Trip 119 : South-East Asia, Thailand : Day out in the Countryside, near Nong Khai
Video/Movie Clip recorded on a 3 week trip to Thailand, October 2012. On this trip I visited some stunningly beautiful beaches and lively big cities ... but for me the highlight of the trip was undoubtedly the 4-5 days spent in the far north of Thailand near the border crossing with Laos in the countryside outside Nong Khai, spending some #39;quiet #39; time with my friend and her extended family in a small village. Nothing else to add in terms of commentary or explanation - the video shows just a quick snippet of the time spent in this lovely area with some lovely people!From:TravelChampionViews:0 0ratingsTime:12:54More inTravel Events
