Men will see you as equals till you behave like one: Neelu Singh

The author has posted comments on this articleReeba Zachariah & Vipashana V K, TNN | Apr 14, 2014, 05.40AM IST MUMBAI: Curiosity, they say, kills the cat. But in Neelu Singh's case it landed her in the travel industry. A graduate in microbiology, she picked up a summer job at SITA World Travel in Agra where her father, an army officer, was posted to while away time. But the brief stint deepened her curiosity for the industry and the four months stay in 1993 turned into an eventful 12-year career journey at the travel agency.

In 2000, when Kuoni acquired SITA, the deal not only transformed the Swiss tour operator's India story but also Singh's professional path. Singh, who by then was based in SITA's Delhi office, had to move to Mumbai for greater responsibilities at the travel solutions company. Five years later, when the online travel industry was at the cusp of a boom, she quit to head ezeego1.com, a unit of Cox & Kings.

"I was done with offline and I wanted to explore the online world," says the chief operating officer. "I felt if I don't do it now, I would be sitting dead in some corner of the office. It also gave me an opportunity to upscale my skills and move several notches up."

Even after nine years at ezeego1, her enthusiasm hasn't dimmed a bit. She credits "a young team" that keeps her charged to get through the 24x7 online world. At 41, Singh says she is the oldest in the team of 350. As for her personal life, this mother of a 10-year-old son says that she has been blessed as she hasn't faced any major challenge.

"Things have always fallen in place. Nothing has changed because of marriage and motherhood. In fact, life has become more beautiful." Singh, a practising Buddhist for two decades, stresses that mutual respect and understanding of each other's work pressures are the keys to a healthy relationship.

As for professional relationships with male colleagues, Singh warns women against putting pressure on themselves and feeling any lesser than men. "Women need to get out of that mindset. When they do, the world around will change. Men are happy to treat you as equals till you behave like one," says Singh, whose favourite holiday destination is the "picture perfect" Ireland. "If women defeat themselves, nothing can be done. Period."

Top 25 Destinations In The World, According To TripAdvisors Vast Travel Community

Thats why the newly announced 2014 Travelers Choice awards for destinations is seen as a significant benchmark. It provides a barometer for whats in and whats out in global travel and offers a way of assessing emerging trends that will define the $6 trillion industry in the coming years.

"Our global travelers are the tastemakers for uncovering the best places to visit around the world," Barbara Messing, chief marketing officer for TripAdvisor, boasted in a summary of the report, which looked at the millions of reviews and opinions of TripAdvisor travelers. Researchers used an algorithm that took into account the quantity and quality of reviews and ratings for hotels, attractions and restaurants in destinations worldwide, gathered over a 12-month period, to come up with their results.

Using those parameters, Asian destinations shined the brightest in 2014. Six of the top 25 spots were from Asia, while four Asian cities -- Beijing, Shanghai, Hanoi and Siem Reap (home of Cambodias Angkor Wat) -- shot up at least 10 places year-over-year.

Yet, it was the iconic bridge between the East and West, Istanbul, which climbed 11 spots to top TripAdvisors list in 2014. Its enviable ranking is a testament to the citys tenacity, given the rash of political instability in recent months.

Perennial favorites Rome and London rounded out the top three, while Dubai, Budapest and Lisbon entered the Travelers Choice top 25 for the first time.

In addition to its list of global movers and shakers, TripAdvisor also issued individual rankings for Africa, Asia, Australia, Canada, the Caribbean, Central America, Europe, China, Middle East, Russia, South America, the South Pacific, the UK and the U.S. The travel giants list of domestic U.S. destinations showed that southern charm, particularly in the Lone Star State, is sweeping the nation.

Indeed, 10 of the top 25 destinations in the U.S. are located in southern states. The Texas hubs of Houston, San Antonio and Austin saw the biggest gains, while Atlanta and Nashville entered the top 25 for the first time.

Scroll down for a complete look at the top 25 U.S. destinations in 2014, or click through the slideshow above for a journey through the international hotspots. Note that +/- denotes a change in ranking year-over-year, 0 signals no change, while new means the destination is new to the top 25.

World's largest swarm of genetically modified mosquitoes released in Brazil

Home > News > world-news

London, Apr 12 : The world's largest ever swarm of genetically modified mosquitoes has been released in Brazil to combat infectious disease, according to reports.

Jacobina, a farming town in Bahia, has been plagued for years by dengue fever, a mosquito-borne tropical disease and a leading cause of illness and fatality in Brazil.

According to the Global Post, the newly hatched Aedes aegypti mosquitoes have been engineered to wipe out their own species, the Independent reported.

Last year Brazil reported 1.4 million cases of dengue, for which there is no vaccine - the most severe form of the illness, dengue hemorrhagic fever, can lead to shock, coma and death.

The so-called "Franken-skeeter" has been genetically modified (GM) in a laboratory with a gene designed to devastate the non-GM Aedes aegypti population and reduce dengue's spread.

The mosquitoes contain a lethal gene but are kept alive in the laboratory with the help of the antibiotic tetracycline. Once they reach larval stage, the males are separated from the females, which are subsequently destroyed.

Then the males, which don't bite, are released so they can mate with wild females. Their offspring inherit the lethal gene and then die before they can reproduce because they are not treated with tetracycline.

WTTC welcomes EU visa package announcement

Following the EU's announcement of the proposed changes to the Schengen Visa Code, David Scowsill, President and CEO of The World Travel & Tourism Council (WTTC) says:

"The World Travel & Tourism Council welcomes the EU visa package announcement by the European Commission yesterday. It will simplify and speed up the processing of visas in Europe and ensure more foreign visitors, increased tourism receipts and more jobs at a vital time for the European economy. But the work is not done. We now strongly encourage MEPS to vote through these proposed changes.

As part of the announcement, Vice-President of the European Commission, responsible for Industry and Entrepreneurship, Antonia Tajani, stated that "Tourism is Europes growth engine and has been the most important stronghold of the European economy during the recent crisis".' It is rewarding to hear one of Europe's top Commissioners publicly recognising the leading role played by the Travel & Tourism sector in driving the European economy. WTTC speaks on behalf of the sector, with one voice to Governments, encouraging them to appreciate the economic and social importance of the Industry. WTTC and its members work vigorously for visa reform.

WTTC urges Governments to continue to look for ways in which they can adopt smarter visa and border security policies to bolster Travel & Tourism as a driver of jobs and economic growth. We will continue to push for a fundamental change in the minds of Governments - balancing security needs with freedom to travel by moving away from the current approaches to a faster implementation of visa waiver and trusted traveller programmes".

The World Travel & Tourism Council (WTTC) is the global authority on the economic and social contribution of Travel & Tourism. It promotes sustainable growth for the industry, working with governments and international institutions to create jobs, to drive exports and to generate prosperity. Travel & Tourism accounts for 255 million jobs globally. At US$6 trillion (9% of GDP) the sector is a key driver for investment and economic growth. For more than 20 years, the World Travel & Tourism Council has been the voice of this industry globally. Members are the Chairs, Presidents and Chief Executives of the world's leading, private sector Travel & Tourism businesses. These Members bring specialist knowledge to guide government policy and decision-making, raising awareness of the importance of the industry as an economic generator of prosperity. WTTC's Sustainability Initiative has already concluded a number of projects aimed at driving sustainable economic recovery and growth, namely: the 'Leading the Challenge on Climate Change' report, and 'Climate Change A Joint Approach to Addressing the Challenge'.

Reading Deborah Jacobs piece,How To Follow Your Dream And Spend Your Retirement Traveling The World, got me thinking. You have to admit it soundsawfullygood. She describes a kind of fantasy: ditch your possessions and hit the road during retirement. And some people actually do it, including Lynne and Tim Martin.

It even lead to a memoir, Home Sweet Anywhere: How We Sold Our House, Created a New Life, and Saw the World. I dont know about their tax situation, but it sounds like a legitimate second professional life to me, and probably was even a money maker. That makes it sound decidedly different froma case about world travelthe Tax Court and Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals recently considered.

InMichael Oros, the Ninth Circuit agreed that Mr. Oros couldnt write off his world trip on his taxes. Oros was a full-time employee of Intel. But a trip around the world and writing about it sounded tempting. So in 2006, Mr. Oros began a long to South America, Asia, Africa, and Australia. He traveled throughout South America in 2006, then to Asia, Africa, and Australia during 2007.

Throughout the entire trip, Oros was on paid vacation or paid sabbatical from Intel. He did try to act business-like about it, writing up a businessplan and keeping a contemporaneous journal.Trouble was, he had never previously written a book. Even worse, five years after the trip, he still hadnt completed it.

To the IRS and the courts, that meant he simply wasnt in the business of being an author. And that made all his tax write-offs no good. So for people like me that think a traveling retirement sounds great, will the IRS pay for your big trip?

The short answer is no. The more nuanced answer is that its conceivable, provided that you make it areal business. Of course, if you want to enjoy yourself and avoid any IRS hasslesmy standard adviceis to keep your business and personal pursuits separate.

But it can be tempting, as Mr. Oros could attest.Just look at the math. Assuming your combined state and federal tax rate is 45%, spending $20,000 really only costs you $11,000. The government pays $9,000.Butbe aware itis an area of intense IRS scrutiny.

In fact, the IRS hasissued a manualto help agents ferret out taxpayers improperly writing off hobbies. The IRS is less likely to question whether youre engaged in a business if your income from the activity exceeds your expenses. It also matters whether you conduct yourself in a businesslike manner. If you keep good records and hold yourself out as running a business, it will help.

If you can manage to eke out a profit three years out of every five (or two years out of seven, if your activity is horse breeding), the IRS willpresumeyoure in business to make a profit. That presumption is worth a lot, saving you from mud wrestling with the IRS over a more amorphous facts and circumstances test.
