iQOO Unveils 120W Fast Charging Technology, New Phone Expected in August: Report – Gadgets 360

iQOO unveiled its 120W ultra-fast charging technology today as per a report. The new offering is believed to be able to fully charge a 4,000mAh battery within just 15 minutes. The Vivo sub-brand, who already has a slew of fast charging options to choose from, first introduced the 120W technology at the 2019 Mobile World Congress in Shanghai, China. It seems that fast chargers are on everyone's radar, as rival brand Oppo also announced the launch of its 125W fast charging technology, expected on July 15 and Realme is also tipped to be working on its 100W+ charger, which it reportedly plans to launch this month.

According to a Gizmochina report, the brand said that its 120W technology can charge 50 percent of a 4,000mAh battery in five minutes and a full recharge can be achieved in just 15 minutes. iQOO already has several fast charging solutions on offer, including the 33W, 44W and 55W technology seen in its smartphones.

Last year, iQOO first talked about the 120W fast charging technology at the Mobile World Congress conference. Since the technology is not yet under mass production, the report also suggests that iQOO might be the first brand in the world to officially announce the same.

Leakster Digital Chat Station took to Weibo to reveal that an iQOO phone with the 120W fast charging technology may be unveiled in August. The device may come with super VC liquid cooling technology to maintain an optimal internal temperature.

Last month, it was tippedthat the iQOO 3 Pro phone is in the works, which features a 4,500mAh battery, a 6.56-inch screen and fast charging technology. Whether this new phone would feature the 120W charging technology is yet to be confirmed by the Chinese brand.

On the other hand, Oppo announced that it will be launching its 125W fast charging technology on July 15. In another leak, Realme was revealed to be working on a 100W+ fast charging tech. Believed to be called Ultra Dart fast charging, speculations suggest that it can charge up one-third of a 4,000mAh+ battery in just three minutes. The tip also suggests that the tech could see a launch later this month.

Women in Technology- Addressing the 6 types of Gender Gaps – Analytics Insight

Women have traditionally pioneered the field of computer technology, yet as we move forward in the 21st century the technology sector is still seen dominated by men. Diversity is critical in technology just like any other industry to create better and safer products and services for the benefit of society. A report from McKinsey highlighted that, diverse companies perform better, have more engaged employees, retain workers better and hire better talent, than those who do not focus on diversity and inclusion.

Employees in pro-diversity regions, like the U.S. and Western Europe, prefer to work in diverse work environments. In a survey of 1,000 respondents, 67% of job seekers overall analyse workforce diversity when evaluating an offer. This holds especially in case of the top female recruits who look at gender-diverse work environments. Despite these studies, women remain widely underrepresented in IT and core technology roles.

So where does the lacuna lie? Though tech companies offer formal gender diversity training programs to increase awareness in a bid to reduce gender bias at work and address the barriers that hinder the progress to build a diverse and inclusive team, research shows that these programs do not increase workforce diversity. After five years of organising diversity training programs for its workforce, companies subsequently reported no change in the number of women engaged in management positions.

Though the technology industry has made efforts toward achieving diversity and inclusion into hiring talent, the real progress has been slow, represented with fewer women cross countries currently in the tech workforce.

According to the data by the World economic forum, less than a third of female students choose to study higher education courses in subjects like math and engineering resulting in being under-represented in STEM-related fields. On average, around 30% of the worlds researchers are women. Those working in the STEM fields publish less research and often receive less pay.

Though it may be relatively easy for women to begin their career in the industry, the catch lies in promotion ironically, they often stall in lower-level positions feeling stagnated in their careers. According to data from the National Science Foundation, only 38% of women who majored in computer science are working in the field compared to 53% of men.

Diversity in the workplace has a lot to do with psychological safety and a comfortable welcoming environment in the workplace. As long as workplaces dont become women-friendly, they would not feel comfortable enough to speak up and contribute to the team constructively.

When countries and industries do not value women at an equal pedestal, women working in those countries dont feel psychologically safe speaking up, even though they may have innovative ideas, they might hesitate to discuss.

According to a study from the Silicon Valley Bank, the founders gender has a direct impact on gender diversity in a start-up, and there is where the gap lies, one in four start-ups have a female founder, while 37% have at least one woman on the board of directors and 53% have at least one woman in an executive position.

Women are not only underrepresented in STEM; they are also underpaid grim condition that has not changed in over 25 years. Even though STEM professionals on average earn significantly more than those in the non-STEM fields, the gender gap is still prevalent. For computing fields, on average a woman earns 87% of what a man earns. The numbers are even worse for black women in STEM who earn around 87% of white womens salaries and just 62% of what men earn.

According to IDC research, the percentage of women in senior leadership positions grew from 21 percent to 24 percent between 2018 and 2019. In organizations where 50 percent or more senior leadership positions are held by women, they are more likely to offer equal pay and have higher retention rates for longer than a year, besides reporting higher job satisfaction levels.

To bridge the gender gap, companies are making conscious efforts with re-skilling and career development initiatives to help women advance in the workplace and drive forward their careers.

IBM, through its Technical Womens Pipeline Program, has established programs to advance women in technical leadership roles. The company aligns mid-career women with both an executive coach and a sponsor to help them navigate opportunities. In IBM, women hold a quarter of management positions worldwide and comprise 29% of the total workforce.

Deloitte has also seen the positive results for its sponsorship program aimed at its women workforce. Women accounted for 44% of the companys workforce in the 2019 fiscal year. A quarter of Deloittes Global Board constitutes of women.

The bridge to mend the gender gap applies equally well among organisations, leaders and practitioners, now and in the future. Bringing women workforce with a wider range of perspectives and ideas onto the work environment can be good for creatively driving innovation and advancing the tech industry. Moreover, ensuring more female workforce can give them greater visibility as role models which may help move the needle on womens overall tech industry representation.

It may become possible for someone in Australia to have a part built by a manufacturer in Strongsville. They can send a 3D photo, then have the file loaded into whatever machine is making the part."

Massachusetts Senates omnibus police reform bill includes provision banning facial recognition technology; O – MassLive.com

Facial recognition, a controversial type of software criticized for its inaccuracies and potential to violate personal privacies, has been at the forefront of debates on surveillance throughout the country, and Massachusetts may now be poised to ban the technology.

In February, The New York Times dedicated a 31-minutes episode of its popular podcast The Daily to reporting on the softwares existence and whether the technology provides a beneficial tool for law enforcements investigations or poses an even bigger threat to privacy.

Many individuals are continuing to argue for the latter.

Opponents of the form of biometric surveillance have pointed out that the software is being used by governmental agencies with minimal oversight and that it raises serious questions about the extent to which artificial intelligence should be used in everyday life.

Another concern is that facial recognition has proven to frequently misidentify people of color, elderly people and children.

The software even led Robert Williams, a Black man living in a suburb of Michigan, to be wrongfully identified and taken into custody for a crime he did not commit, according to the American Civil Liberties Union.

Theyre really only good at evaluating the faces of middle-aged, white men, which is obviously not the majority of the population, Kade Crockford, director of the Technology for Liberty program at the ACLU of Massachusetts, told MassLive when discussing facial recognition. The tech. is just not ready for primetime, not even close.

Starting as early as last year, residents, public officials and advocacy organizations from across the U.S. have fought for the technology to be regulated, and so far, seven communities in Massachusetts have either temporarily or outright banned their municipal governments use of the software.

Easthampton was the most recent city to pass such a ban. A similar ordinance restricting the technology was signed into law in Boston, the second-largest city after San Francisco to ban the software in the United States.

Its hugely significant, Crockford said of communities taking it upon themselves to restrict facial recognition at the local level. City councilors have agreed that this technology poses really an unprecedented threat to peoples privacy and civil rights.

Despite being lambasted for its civil liberties concerns and racial biases, facial recognition still remains largely unrestricted at both the state and federal levels. However, that could change in the weeks to come.

A wide-ranging, omnibus police reform bill, introduced by the Massachusetts Senate Ways and Means Committee on Sunday would temporarily ban the governments use of the software.

The piece of legislation, called S.2800, would issue a statewide moratorium on the use of the technology, banning the government from using the software from the date the bill is potentially signed into law until Dec. 31, 2021.

Such legislation would prohibit a government agency, office, department, commission, bureau, agent or contractor from acquiring, possessing or accessing any form of biometric surveillance, excluding identification based on finger or palm prints.

A statewide facial recognition moratorium had previously been in the works for months but was then added as a provision onto the police reform bill.

Crockford pointed out that state legislatures are slow to act but noted the Massachusetts Senate is finally taking notice.

The State Legislature is finally realizing that they need to do something, she said. Were happy to see that.

Among the dozens of provisions inside the police reform bill is the establishment of a special commission to study the use of facial recognition by the Massachusetts Department of Transportation and law enforcement agencies.

The provision follows controversy from a year ago after the ACLU of Massachusetts sued MassDOT over the agencys use of the drivers license database for surveillance. MassDOT has used its database of state-issued identification photographs for facial recognition since 2006.

The state of Massachusetts has a facial recognition program in their Registry of Motor Vehicles system, so that every time you go to get a drivers license now, the picture that is taken of your face is scanned against all of the existing images that they have in their database, Crockford explained. They basically compare them to see if theres a match, and if there is a match, you may be investigated for trying to get a drivers license under a fake name or something like that.

The committees members would include the State Senate and House chairs of the Joint Committee on the Judiciary as well as one person with academic expertise in bias in machine learning and another expert on privacy, technology and the law.

Several state officials, or representatives in their stead, would also serve as members on the committee, including Massachusetts Secretary of Transportation Stephanie Pollack, Secretary of Public Safety and Security Thomas Turco and Attorney General Maura Healey.

Gov. Charlie Baker will be able to appoint five members to the commission as well, including executive directors or designees from the Massachusetts Chiefs of Police Association, the New England Innocence Project, Jane Doe Inc., the Massachusetts Coalition against Sexual Assault and Domestic Violence, the New England chapter of the American Immigration Lawyer Association and the ACLU of Massachusetts.

A statewide ban on facial recognition technology is direly needed, Crockford emphasized, because, in its current state, the software cannot be used appropriately in any circumstances.

Were not going to stop. Were going to continue until every single person in Massachusetts is protected, she said.

They collaborated with experts from Stanford and Johns Hopkins universities, and partnered with Samsung, which provided the smartphone, the augmented, virtual and mixed reality technologies, and the mobile artificial intelligence platform. By 2017, the device was ready.

IrisVision helps restore visual function to people with such conditions as macular degeneration, diabetic retinopathy, retinitis pigmentosis, Stargardt disease, glaucoma and optic atrophy but not cataracts. It can help someone with visual acuity as low as 20/1000. (Acuity measures sharpness: A 20/200 acuity, for example, means a person can make out an object at a distance of 20 feet that a normal vision person could see from 200 feet.)

So how does it work?

IrisVision helps the brain use parts of the eyes that still function properly. The smartphones camera captures an image, and then the virtual reality, or V.R., headset and algorithms enhance the image by providing enough information to fill in the gaps and remap the scene to provide a complete picture.

The company recently added voice control, video streaming, Alexa and other interactive features that give those with low vision easy access to news, weather updates, YouTube videos and TV shows viewed within the headset. The person can adjust the headset, by voice command or button, to zoom in or adjust the color, contrast or brightness.

Still, the device has its shortcomings: It is large and clunky, and the user needs to be stationary not walking around to use it. In addition, at $2,950, it is expensive. And unless you are a veteran, health insurers do not cover the cost.

Preferential treatment policy for women professors at Eindhoven University of Technology: The end does (not) justify the means – Innovation Origins

Although the goal of attracting more women to the highest academic positions is commendable, the TU/e womens quota is in contravention of the Dutch Equal Opportunities Act. This conclusion was reached last week by the Netherlands Institute for Human Rights (CRM) in response to a complaint from the RADAR anti-discrimination agency. Incidentally, the Institute also made recommendations for improving matters at the University. Meanwhile, the TU/e has promised to do better.

The disadvantaged position of women in science has been a thorn in many peoples side for years, and with good reason. The three Technical Universities of Delft, Twente, and Eindhoven, as well as the Erasmus University, are doing particularly poorly in this area. The TU/e, for example, has long been dangling at the bottom of the list in the annual monitor of the Dutch Network of Women Professors (LNVH).

The percentage of women scientists at TU/e was low across all levels in 2018: 14 % of professors, 13 % of university senior lecturers (UHDs), and 24 % of university lecturers (UDs). Even within Europe, Eindhoven has the lowest number of women professors. Where, as the CRM also acknowledges, there is a serious underrepresentation of women in scientific positions.

The womens quota set up in July last year as part of the Irne Curie Fellowship program has been used by the university as a last resort to bring about the much-needed change. For a period of five years, for the first 150 vacancies, female applicants must be given priority over male applicants. Only when six months of intensive recruitment have failed to produce a suitable female candidate can this be deviated from.

Does the end now justify the means? Well, no. At the time, the introduction of the Eindhoven womens quota led to fierce discussions between supporters and opponents. There were even parliamentary questions and a procedure initiated by RADAR on the basis of more than 50 complaints and reports. However, opinions about the necessity of such a solution remain divided.

For example, Janneke Plantenga, professor of economics, dean, and chairman of the Task Force on Discrimination and Inclusion at Utrecht University, recently stated that she herself was not in favor of quotas. In some departments of the university, 70 percent of the staff are women. Should we set a male quota then? She, therefore, preferred awareness and charisma.

Thats exactly one of the points where criticism has been leveled. In the opinion of the CRM, the proportion of women at the TU/e is not equally low in all faculties. For that reason, such a drastic solution is not considered necessary across the board. Also, according to the Board, the TU/e has not sufficiently demonstrated that other solutions were tried first, such as linking the allocation of financial resources to achieving the goal of attracting more women. Finally, the assessment of candidates did not take sufficient account of their qualifications rather than just their gender. This puts male applicants at a disadvantage compared to female applicants. According to the CRM, the way in which the Eindhoven University of Technology formulates its preferred policy goes too far in this sense, and is contrary to the Dutch Equal Treatment Act.

By way of comparison: In 2012 the CRM confirmed the policy of TU Delft in a similar case, after it had opened ten positions only for women. However, the need for those ten additional vacancies was considered sufficiently substantiated, all the more so because all other vacancies in Delft at the time were open to both men and women. The Board, therefore, considered TU Delfts preferential policy to be less broad and extensive than the quota applied by TU/e. Things are now going much better in Delft. The proportion of women has increased in almost all faculties, in Architecture even to as much as 34 percent.At TU Twente, too, the proportion of female professors rose by 1% in the past year as a result of a similar preferential measure, whereby ten new professorships were opened exclusively to female candidates.

Fortunately for the TU/e, the Colleges report not only contains bad news but also suggestions for improvements. The Board proposes a number of measures, from which not only Eindhoven but also other universities can benefit: Training selection committees to become aware of their own, often unconscious, prejudices, and their effects on the way they judge people. Setting up the recruitment and selection procedures in such a way that gender stereotypes have less impact on the selection of candidates. Set up internal career development and coaching programs for women by senior colleagues. The strict requirements for preference policies mean that men are not excluded. However, working conditions that bias women are legally allowed under certain conditions.

Nevertheless, the judgment of the CRM does not have a binding legal character but is only a recommendation. In practice, however, such advice is followed more often than not. For example, the TU/e now promises to improve and indicates that it will carefully study the recommendations of the College. At the same time, the university states that it will continue to do its best to work on gender equality.

NRTI, Indias First Railway And Transportation Technology University, Announces Admissions For Academic Year 20-21 – Swarajya

Vadodara-based National Rail and Transportation Institute (NRTI), Indias first university focused on railway and transport technology related education, multidisciplinary research and training established by Indian Railways, has announced admissions for Academic year 2020-21.

A Deemed to be University under the de Novo category, this will be third year of intake at NRTI, which has seen significant progress over these years towards its vision of being among the top Universities in the country that can help power the growth and transformation of Indian transportation sector.

NRTI will admit students to its established B.Sc. and BBA programmes in Transportation Technology and Transportation Management respectively, as well as two new B.Tech. programmes, two new MBA programmes and four new MSc programmes.

Most of these are unique programmes offered exclusively at NRTI. The new programmes also include an international Masters in Railway Systems Engineering & Integration offered in collaboration with the University of Birmingham, UK where students will spend one year at University of Birmingham.

The last date for application is July 31, 2020 for BBA, BSc and post-graduate programmes. Entrance test for these programmes will take place on August 23, 2020 at multiple centres around the country.

B.Tech admissions will be based on JEE Mains score, last date of application is September 14, 2020.

NRTI has augmented teaching with quality online courses and summer internships in view of Covid 19 as courses for all programmes and batches were conducted online by the faculty using latest technology and pedagogy and teaching was completed without compromising quality and safety of students.

Students were also provided free access to a library of 4,000 online courses from leading Universities around the world to supplement classes. These included courses in Data Science, Microeconomic Principle and Understanding Research Methods.Besides, students of NRTI will be awarded digital certificates from the offering university, as well as credits by NRTI.

A six-week online industry internships organized for the second year students with leading private as well as public sector organisations in the transportation sector.

NRTI follows government's regulations with respect to reservations for SC, ST, OBC and EWS. Supernumerary seats will also be considered for PwD, Kashmiri Migrants and Ex-Servicemen, as per the government regulations.

TUCSON (KVOA) - NASA technology is being installed at businesses around Tucson, with the hopes of removing contaminants from the air. Contaminants including the Coronavirus.

Inside the walls of Brother John's in Tucson, there's more than just beer, Bourbon and BBQ. Brother John's is one place using the new technology.

John Aldecoa, the owner of Brother John's, said he was excited about this new technology.

"We were turned on to this technology that has been around for almost 20 years," Aldecoa said.

The technology from NASA is called "USA Nanacoat Lumaclean." Researcher Jason Field from the University of Arizona said the technology removes harmful pathogens in the air.

"It was developed by NASA to solve an issue they were having to produce food in a contained environment for a trip to Mars," Field said. "It was later found this technology can be used in medical facilities and food processing facilities."

"So instead of having the air recirculated that could have virus in there, this will actually neutralize that and purify the air," Aldecoa said. "We joke and say you're going to leave brother johns cleaning than you got here."

The new technology has also made its way into dental offices. Field says the light-activated advanced filtration system is effective on all viruses of all sizes.

"Hepifilters are not effective on particles less than 0.3 micros," Field said. "The Coronavirus is 0.1 microns inside."

Currently, OPPOs 65W SuperVOOC Flash Charging technology is the fastest charging technology available commercially. The same technology is also available on Realme phones like the Ace2 and the Reno4 series that went official in June in China. Fresh information shared by reputed tipster Ishan Agarwal reveals that Realme is currently working on a 100W+ fast charging solution. This tech may get announced this month.

Realmes 65W fast charging tech is dubbed as SuperDart, but the upcoming 100W+ rapid charging tech is expected to get announced as Ultra Dart. The tipster revealed that it can charge 1/3rd of a 4,000mAh battery in just 3 minutes.

The above image shared by the tipster reveals that a 4,000mAh battery can be completely charged in around 10 minutes. The 11660mA mentioned in the image indicates that the technology can offer almost 120W charging speeds.

Realmes former Vice President for China named Xu QI recently interacted with netizens saying that the 100W fast charging is a bit slow. It indicated that the company could be planning to offer a faster charging solution than 100W. While the 120W Ultra Dar could be debuting this month, it remains to be seen when it will be made available to the users.

Last month, Xiaomis 120W charger was spotted at the 3C certification platform. The charger has a model number of MDY-12-ED and it was also spotted in a leaked video in real. A reliable Chinese tipster had claimed that Xiaomi could be the first brand to launch a phone with a 100W+ charging solution. Last year in June, Vivo had showcased its 120W Super FlashCharge technology that could charge a 4,000mAh battery in 13 minutes. There is a possibility that Vivo may too launch a smartphone with 120W charging support.
