Super-stealthy ‘Flame' computer virus spies on Iran

Whenever a high-ranking Iranian politician has sent or received an email in the past two years, a computer virus nicknamed Flame has most likely copied that email and secretly shipped it to an outside computer network.

When a user of an infected Iranian computer typed a password, Flame stole it. When the user opened a sensitive document or instant-messaged a friend or video-chatted with a colleague, Flame nabbed that, too.

Flame, which reportedly has infected hundreds of computers across Iran and the Middle East, is probably the most sophisticated computer virus ever detected, say the experts who discovered it this week.

Flame's sheer size and the information it seeks it's taking data, not money probably makes it the handiwork of a government or group of governments, say the experts at Kaspersky, the respected Russian lab that identified the virus.

And Flame may well be the latest weapon in a series of cyberskirmishes that have exploded in size and sophistication in recent years, say local and national computer security experts interviewed by The World-Herald.

In this largely hidden fight, the Chinese and Russian governments are believed to have used computer worms and viruses to steal American government secrets, as well as staggering amounts of proprietary information from U.S. companies.

And the United States and Israel are suspected of collaborating on an earlier computer worm known as Stuxnet, which famously crippled the Iranian nuclear program in 2010.

Flame, by contrast, appears to be spying, not seeking to destroy Iranian computer systems.

It actually looks a lot like traditional espionage, but how it gets done has changed, said Robin Gandhi, a University of Nebraska at Omaha computer security expert and professor affiliated with the Peter Kiewit Institute. This isn't your typical virus. ... The whole point of (Flame) is to be sneaky and stealthy and gather data as you go about your business, never noticing.

Super-virus Flame raises the cyberwar stakes

Flame, a stealthy and complex cyberweapon, was found to be spying on Iran's government officials and computer systems.

NEW YORK (CNNMoney) -- The "Flame" virus, the most complex computer bug ever discovered, has been lurking for years inside Iranian government computers, spying on the country's officials.

Publicly unveiled this week, the bug is one of the most potent cyber weapons ever spotted in the wild. Security professionals say it marks a new milestone in the escalating digital espionage battle.

Flame's complexity and power "exceed[s] those of all other cyber menaces known to date," research firm Kaspersky Lab wrote in a dispatch about its investigation into Flame.

In a statement posted on its website on Monday, the Iranian National Computer Emergency Response Team (CERT) said it discovered Flame after "multiple investigations" over the past few months.

The stealthy malware has been in the wild for at least two years, the CERT team said, evading detection by security software.

It's a spy bug that's capable of, among other things, capturing what's on a user's screen, turning on a computer's microphone to record conversations, detecting who and what is on a network, collecting lists of vulnerable passwords, and transferring a user's computer files to another server.

The attack worked. Flame was likely responsible for recent incidents of "mass data loss" in the government, Iran's CERT team said in its terse announcement.

Patrik Runald, director of research at Websense Security Labs, said Flame is "potentially the most advanced malware to date, at least in terms of functionality combined with ability to stay hidden over a long period of time."

Flame is an unusually giant piece of malware: At 20 megabytes, it's about 20 to 30 times larger than typical computer bugs.

It seems that super-complex computer malware is fast becoming the weapon of choice for governments around the world. The Russian anti-virus firm Kaspersky has revealed the existence of a new piece of malware it calls, one of the most complex threats ever discovered. The so-called Flame malware is believed to have been operating since August 2010 at least.

The last of this breed of malware was the Stuxnet worm that was designed to damage the equipment in Iranian nuclear facilities. Flame, on the other hand, is not designed to cause damage to vital system, but to gather a huge amount of data silently. An infected system will begin monitoring network traffic, taking screenshots, recording audio from the system microphone, and logging keystrokes. All this is done very carefully to avoid detection.

Flame is not as single-purpose as Stuxnet, but is far from a wide-scale infection. The 20MB virus has been detected on about 600 systems belonging to individuals, businesses, schools, and government agencies. The Flame malware is about 20 times larger than Stuxnet was, making it very difficult to analyze, but researchers feel confident that this threat was designed with government backing. The question of which government is currently up in the air.

Nations that have been targeted by the malware include Syria, Egypt, Israel, Iran, Sudan, and Saudi Arabia. Though, Iran was hit the hardest by far. Unfortunately, that group of targets does not narrow down the perpetrator much; those countries are of interest to many intelligence agencies around the world.

Kaspersky is careful to point out that while August 2010 is the earliest confirmed instance of Flame, it could have been operating even before that. Because this malware is modular, it could continue to evolve long into the future.

This week, the Internet greeted the latest foray into 8-bit composition a couple albums worth of Radiohead. AYouTube user named Quinton Sung uploaded full-length 8-bit versions ofOK Computer and, fittingly,Kid A, along with other selections from the bands canon. While the introduction to Airbag and the pleasure of hearing the trippy Karma Police chorus are immediate draws on OK Computer, the technique works especially well forKid A.

The 2000 album, the one where the band ditched the guitars, as every review said at the time, isso isolated and ethereal, the fuzzy new video-game rendition seems almost warm and inviting by comparison. Example: National Anthem, which on the Radiohead album feels menacing, plays in 8-bit like the soundtrack to aboss level on some dustyMario Bros. title.

While none of Sungs Radiohead remixes can be deemed typical chiptune earworms(see: 8-bit Beat It, Michael Jackson), they also avoid the production mess that can plague a cover (see: 8-bit Buddy Holly, Weezer. Youll be hitting close tab instantly).

The only song that sounds mostly unrecognizable, disappointingly, is How to Disappear Completely. If the original version of this song, as the tastemakers at Pitchfork originally wrote years ago, boils down Radioheads music to its spectral essence, then the 8-bit version just ended up lost in translation.

1 Reason to Expect Big Things From Super Micro Computer

Here at The Motley Fool, I've long cautioned investors to keep a close eye on inventory levels. It's a part of my standard diligence when searching for the market's best stocks. I think a quarterly checkup can help you spot potential problems. For many companies, products that sit on the shelves too long can become big trouble. Stale inventory may be sold for lower prices, hurting profitability. In extreme cases, it may be written off completely and sent to the shredder.

Basic guidelines In this series, I examine inventory using a simple rule of thumb: Inventory increases ought to roughly parallel revenue increases. If inventory bloats more quickly than sales grow, this might be a sign that expected sales haven't materialized. Is the current inventory situation at Super Micro Computer (Nasdaq: SMCI) out of line? To figure that out, start by comparing the company's inventory growth to sales growth. How is Super Micro Computer doing by this quick checkup? At first glance, OK, it seems. Trailing-12-month revenue increased 12.9%, and inventory increased 11.3%. Comparing the latest quarter to the prior-year quarter, the story looks potentially problematic. Revenue improved 2.5%, and inventory grew 11.3%. Over the sequential quarterly period, the trend looks worrisome. Revenue dropped 3.9%, and inventory grew 18.4%.

Advanced inventory I don't stop my checkup there, because the type of inventory can matter even more than the overall quantity. There's even one type of inventory bulge we sometimes like to see. You can check for it by examining the quarterly filings to evaluate the different kinds of inventory: raw materials, work-in-progress inventory, and finished goods. (Some companies report the first two types as a single category.)

A company ramping up for increased demand may increase raw materials and work-in-progress inventory at a faster rate when it expects robust future growth. As such, we might consider oversized growth in those categories to offer a clue to a brighter future, and a clue that most other investors will miss. We call it "positive inventory divergence."

On the other hand, if we see a big increase in finished goods, that often means product isn't moving as well as expected, and it's time to hunker down with the filings and conference calls to find out why.

What's going on with the inventory at Super Micro Computer? I chart the details below for both quarterly and 12-month periods.

Let's dig into the inventory specifics. On a trailing-12-month basis, work-in-progress inventory was the fastest-growing segment, up 13.2%. On a sequential-quarter basis, work-in-progress inventory was also the fastest-growing segment, up 40.4%. Super Micro Computer may display positive inventory divergence, suggesting that management sees increased demand on the horizon.

Foolish bottom line When you're doing your research, remember that aggregate numbers such as inventory balances often mask situations that are more complex than they appear. Even the detailed numbers don't give us the final word. When in doubt, listen to the conference call, or contact investor relations. What at first looks like a problem may actually signal a stock that will provide the market's best returns. And what might look hunky-dory at first glance could actually be warning you to cut your losses before the rest of the Street wises up.

Now that the Raspberry Pi has launched in Australia (and around the world), the biggest problem will be getting your hands on one.

Only 10,000 have been made so far, but there are already 300,000 pre-orders, with the floodgates now officially open for anyone to register their interest in buying one as soon as their spot opens up to make a binding, paid-for order.

A few errors could be key to super-efficient computer chips

I used to work on an imaging team at a big insurance company and we were required to store our images with a very particular lossless compression in a TIF file specifically because the law does not hold lossy compression as reliable.

But, regarding jessepollard's other statements:

"The place you don't want errors is in the instruction stream."

That's not where the errors are. They're in the calculation results from the non-errored instructions. And then, only in specific types of calculations.

"Images already have errors generated by every lossy compression algorithm."

True, but also irrelevant.

"Unfortunately, these same errors prevent it from being reliable in court."

True.

"Also doesn't work well for facial recognition"

False. Facial recognition is already a fuzzy logic affair. Actually, facial recognition is a perfect example of inexactness in computing and would be a great application for these chips.
