The University of Southampton has switched on the Idiris 4 super computer, making the University the proud owner of the most powerful university-based super computer in England.
Staying ahead of the game in High Performance Computing is vital to help the University stay competitive. Simulation and computation enabled by HPC are recognised globally as the third pillar of modern research and this investment will ensure we remain world leaders in this field.

The machine, which is also the third largest academic super computer in the UK and in the global top 30 for academic super computers,goes into service alongside the rest of the Universitys IT systems rather than replacing them. Idiris 4 is four times more powerful than its predecessor Idiris 3, which launched in 2010, was upgradedlast year and will remain in operation.The system, which is separate from the normal University servers, is used by academics and research students to run programmes that would be too much for a normal PC.
The new super computer has disc space equating to one petabyte, or one million gigabytes, a 50 terabyte memory and is powered by 12, 200 of the latest processors. Each part is designed to handle advanced mathematical and theoretical problems, witheach coprocessor being able to handle one trillion calculations a second. This investment, the pride and joy of the Universitys Computational Modelling Group, is part of a 3.2 million deal that includes OCF plc, who provide data handling, analytical and storage services, and computing giant IBM.
The growth of Big Data and the availability of computing power like Iridis4 means that the range of research areas that are enabled by supercomputing continues to grow. We look forward to seeing its impact on the Universitys research, already recognised for the range and importance of the science conducted on the supercomputers predecessor, Iridis3.

TROY, N.Y. RPI unveiled one of its brand new IBM super computers in Troy on Thursday.
The addition of this super computer, according to RPIs president, is part of its broad plan looking towards 2024.
One of the most powerful computers in the world now calls RPI its home. The school unveiled the Advanced Multi Processing Optimized System or AMOS for short, on Thursday. This IBM supercomputer will be housed at the Rensselaer Technology Park in North Greenbush.
RPI president Shirley Ann Jackson says this computer will allow the school to partner with more businesses to boost companies productivity. AMOS will be partnered with WATSON, another supercomputer RPI debuted months ago, making RPI one of the strongest research institutes in the nation.
"The real message here is that we have raw data that will help with computing and make a difference globally in how we make decisions and discoveries, Jackson says.
The computer makes more than one quadrillion calculations per second - again one of the strongest in the world.

MANILA, Philippines - The Department of Science and Technology is set to acquire an IBM "super computer" to improve weather forecasting and more effectively project the impact of climate change particularly on the agriculture sector, DOST officials said Monday.
IBM will donate the computer, which will arrive in September, to the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA).
The computer will help weathermen extend their forecast from three days to seven, giving people more time to prepare for incoming storms, monsoons and other weather disturbances.
Montejo said the computer would also allow forecasters to use advance weather modeling software to consolidate weather sensors nationwide.
The use of the super computer would make weather forecasting in any part of the country more accurate, he said.
The new equipment will also help DOST prepare better analysis on the impact of climate change by using the climate modeling software and help forecast the proper time for farmers to plant and harvest crops.
The computer can also process data on what would be the weather outlook of the country in the next five to 10 years.
Aside from the super computer, the DOST would also install additional Doppler radars to help weathermen measure the amount of rainfall of an incoming typhoon.
DOST director Raymund Liborio said five more Doppler radars would be installed in strategic areas in the country.
There are now 10 Doppler radars operating nationwide.

The developers of a super computer that can think for itself, process data in seconds and even learn from its mistakes say it will revolutionise business on a global scale.
IBM's computer, called Watson, shot to fame when it took out American quiz show Jeopardy in 2011.
Now the company says the cloud-based technology is set to revolutionise the way companies interact with their customers.
"I think it's going to make a dramatic impact on government services, the finance sector, telecommunications, health care, pretty much every sector that we work in," IBM engineer Glen Wightwick said.
The size of eight refrigerators, Watson is super smart, understanding human speech, crunching problems, understanding data and giving the best answer.
John Gordon, the vice-president of IBM Watson Solutions, says it can also learn from its own mistakes within seconds.
"Just like you and I do, every time we go into different a situation with a good or bad result, it helps us inform what we're going to do next, so we use that with Watson so it can make decisions," he said.
He says Watson is a new type of computer system and marks the beginning of an era of cognitive computing.
"In the past, where we used to program computers and teach them rules about how to work," Mr Gordon said.
