Niwa super computer attacked from Chinese internet address, PM confirms

Prime Minister John Key trod delicately around the risk of a diplomatic and trade row following revelations of a cyber attack on the governments National Institute of Water and Atmospheric Research (Niwa).

The IP (internet protocol) address identified as the source of the attack was in China but that did not mean it originated from there, the PM told his weekly post-cabinet press conference.

I would be very wary of attributing it to any country, he says.

The IP address identified for the Niwa attack was in China but that does not mean it originated there, the PM says.

It is very very difficult to know where these come from they often hide their identity through an IP address they used and sometimes it might look as though it comes from a particular country but they might just be the host.

The IP address on this particular case was China although that does not mean at all it is from a Chinese entity.

Last week the US Federal Bureau of Investigation indicted Chinese citizens (three army officers and two civilians) on charges relating to cyber espionage aimed at numerous American firms and unions and said numerous cyber attacks had been linked to members of Chinese Peoples Liberation Army. The indictment itself is seen as Quixotic (there is almost zero chance China will extradite the men to face charges), but is seen by most commentators as a warning shot, and an attempt embarrass China into changing its (alleged) pattern of attacks.

However, Mr Key says there is no evidence the NIWA attacks came from China.

The number of cyber attacks on New Zealand have nearly doubled in the last year, he says from 134 in 2012 to 219 last year.

But these come from a wide range of sources and most - around 70% - are aimed at private businesses and not government institutions.

Learning on a cloud

(From left) Solomon Yan, Ding Lam, Ron Tam and Alfred Lai have analysed data to make studying for the DSE easier. Photo: Thomas Yau/SCMP Studying large amounts of data can help with everything from revision to job searchesBy Wong Yat-hei

One of the biggest challenges when learning a second language is picking up enough vocabulary.

To help those taking the DSE feel more confident about the English exam, computer students from the Institute of Vocational Education (IVE) have developed an award-winning app which helps students identify which words are most likely to appear on the paper.

But what makes the app so groundbreaking is that the creators have tapped into the "cloud". That's where information can be stored and then accessed from anywhere in the world.

The cloud is a way of storing huge amounts of data, far more than you could fit on one computer. Analysing "big data" can teach us things we never knew before.

The DSE English Learning App is the work of four final year computer systems administration students from the Department of Multimedia and Internet Technology at IVE.

Solomon Yan Chun-shan, Alfred Lai Chun-yin, Ding Lam Chun-wai and Ron Tam Hoi-kit wanted to create an app which would make studying for the DSE easier.

The students studied 22 years of HKCEE and HKALE English exam papers to develop the app. To analyse such a large amount of data would normally require a super-computer which would be too expensive for them.

But by using cloud computing, the students could carry out complex analysis of large amounts of data.

"It was the dream of many IT students to have their own super-computer," says Lai. "Now this dream has come true with the use of cloud technology.

Vikings stadium could be the key – or the curse – in Super Bowl bid

Bud Grant failed to win a Super Bowl in four attempts as Vikings head coach during the 1970s. Running back Adrian Peterson has never qualified in seven superstar seasons with Minnesota.

Yet civic duty calls the icons to help deliver a defining victory for the franchise Tuesday when the Vikings and Minnesota Super Bowl LII committee woo league owners for the chance to play host to the NFL championship game in 2018.

The competition is formidable; New Orleans and Indianapolis already have been host to successful Super Bowls, and each has the major advantage of a venue that is actually built.

But Minnesota has advantages, as well.

Presenters Richard Davis, chief executive of U.S. Bancorp, Marilyn Carlson Nelson, former CEO of Carlson Cos.

Videotaped speeches from Grant, Peterson and other local celebrities including Olympic skier Lindsey Vonn and chef Andrew Zimmern will help bring Minnesota's detailed bid to life this week in the ballroom of Atlanta's Ritz-Carlton Hotel.

"We're going to put a plan together that will blow their mind," Davis said.

Dennis Hopper actually did back in 2008.

The late actor/director/iconoclast made the pitch that year for Indianapolis, a town Hopper adopted after earning an Academy Award nomination for playing alcoholic assistant coach "Shooter" in the 1986 high school basketball movie "Hoosiers."

5 Reasons to Love 'Mad Men's' New Star: The IBM 360

By Helen A.S. Popkin

The commotion kicked up by the new super computer at "Mad Men" advertising agency SC&P is nothing compared to the havoc it wreaked at IBM after it was announced on April 7, 1964 -- 50 years before its AMC debut.

The IBM System 360 led the computer revolution. "Mad Men" designers spent two days at the Computer History Museum in Mountain View, Calif., sketching the real thing to get it exactly right. What's the big deal? Museum curator Dag Spicer gave us the the true story about "Mad Men's" newest featured player.

The SLT (Solid Logic Technology) module, the basic building block of the 360s electronic circuits and IBMs homegrown technology.

The IBM 360 really did change everything

Clever TV critics point to the "2001: Space Odyssey" allusions hidden throughout the "Mad Men" episode featuring the IBM 360 debut -- plunked right in the middle of SC&P's "creative lounge." But unlike the monolith which confronts apes in Stanley Kubrick's masterpiece, the room-sized computer is more than just a metaphor for epochal change. As Don Draper says to Harry Crane, In fact its quite literal.

Spicer confirms, "It was a massive disruption for IBM and computing, and the biggest development project the company has ever taken on, before or since."

The IBM 360 is the first computer able to upgrade

Marketed to serve every degree of industry, "the IBM 360 was a response to an internal crisis," Spicer says.

Prior to the 360's development, IBM had six or seven mainframe computer lines able to process large amounts of data for either business or science -- just not both. To add to the cost and confusion, each line required its own sales and support team. If a customer wanted to upgrade to a bigger mainframe, the software on the old computer had to be completely rewritten. "It was very confusing for salesmen and too expensive to support," Spicer says.

Recap: Mad Men, Season 7, Episode 5, The Runaways

Is there some sort of quota for totally extraneous, skin-crawling, blood-curdling moments that Mad Men needs to fulfill per season? Despite all the moments that made me want to drink myself into a Freddy Rumsen-esque stupor, The Runaways was a great episode. And there are only two left! Something has to be said for a show that riles you up and leaves you hanging. Thats good TV.

Lets get started:

WHAT IS WRONG WITH GINSBERG?!

We all know that the concept of a super computer is frightful a digital journalist like me fears them daily but this was too much. Driven mad by the hum of technology and paranoid from the sight of Lou and Jim Cutler canoodling in the air conditioned lair, Ginsberg arrives at Peggys apartment to work and decides to make a move. They need to procreate, because the super computer is turning everyone homosexual! If there was a way of doing it without having sex, Id do it! he says. She gives that one a firm pass.

Ginsberg then takes it upon himself to slice off his nipple and hands it to Peggy in a small box. This may have been a deranged romantic gesture of sorts. Its my nipple. Its the valve, he says proudly. Hes removed from the office on a stretcher with restraints. Get out while you can! he yells back at Peggy. And he was just starting to grow on us, that Ginsberg.

Remember nice little Stephanie from California?

Shes eight months pregnant. And a hippie! And her baby daddys in jail and hes comin to getcha! So naturally Don decided to give Stephanie his (Megans) home address in the canyons and invited her over for some R&R and cash. The dreams of Sharon Tate are still alive in Laurel Canyon.

You are truly magnetic. What do you do? Didnt Don tell you? Im an actress.

Shes talking about your aura, Megan.

Do you have any meat? Ive been dreaming about it.

ABC cancels 'The Neighbors,' 'Super Fun Night,' 'Suburgatory'

Fourth-place network ABC continued to clean house Friday, canceling the comedies "Suburgatory," "Super Fun Night" and "The Neighbors."

When it was announced last year that Rebel Wilson would bring her edgy humor to ABC in "Super Fun Night," hopes were high, but the comedy from executive producer Conan O'Brien failed to impress critics or viewers.

Despite opening strong last fall with its post-"Modern Family" slot, the show steadily lost steam. The writing was on the wall when the network failed to give it a full-season order -- leaving its episode count at 17 -- and left it to burn out on Tuesdays. Its finale was watched by just 3 million viewers.

ABC has also axed "The Neighbors" after two seasons. The quirky sitcom -- not to be confused with "Neighbors," the Seth Rogen-Zac Efron comedy opening in theaters this weekend -- takes place in a suburban gated community that happens to be occupied by aliens from a planet namedZabvron. Its most recent Friday-night episode brought in 4 million viewers.

ABC also lowered the boom on "Suburgatory" after three seasons. The sitcom followed a single dad who relocates with his teenage daughter from New York City to the suburbs, only to discover that life in the 'burbs is far from perfect.

Though it airs between "The Middle" and "Modern Family" and has received strong reviews, the series failed to generate a substantial audience. This week, it brought in just under 5 million viewers.

The shows join the network's other axed series "Trophy Wife" and "Mixology" to add to what has been a rough year for the Disney-owned network.

Supercomputer – Code Lyoko Wiki

The Supercomputer, also referred as the "Supercalculator",is a quantum supercomputer designed to hold Lyoko, X.A.N.A., and countless actual individuals in its data at the same time. It is housed in theSupercomputer Roombelow the Laboratory.

In Code Lyoko Evolution, the final episode (Ultimate Mission), the supercomputer was shut down again.

The Supercomputer was built by Franz Hopper for the purpose of destroying Carthage. During construction of the supercomputer, Franz Hopper used the Time reversion feature 2,564 times to complete work on the computer. Each time reversion doubles the processing power of the supercomputer, and by extension, X.A.N.A., the Supercomputer is powered by an uranium rod.

The actual Supercomputer is at the lowest level of the Factory where it rises from a hatch with a kind of liquid, most likely liquid nitrogen used for cooling, in the center of the room. The Supercomputer also has a monitoring port a few stories above, but only Jeremie and Aelita can fully understand its potential.

InThe Girl of the Dreams, Jeremy shoutsReturn to the past now! and aTime reversion initiates, even though he has been dragged away from the computer. This may mean that the supercomputer can take voice commands.

In the second season, X.A.N.A. and Aelita were both dependent to the supercomputer's survival. Should it have failed, or ran out of energy, X.A.N.A. would have been destroyed along with Aelita. To that regard, Team Lyoko did not shut down the Supercomputer because of Aelita's dependency to the computer.

In the series finale, the group finally shut down the Supercomputer. Also, in this episode, its hatch is seen with the Eye of X.A.N.A.on it.

The idea of the supercomputer doubling in power with every Return to the Past is probably erroneous - if the supercomputer added a qubit with every return trip, then after Franz was done its data-processing power would be laughable - most likely it takes multiple RTTPs to generate another qubit and increase the processing power. If the processing power truly did double every time, then the number would exceed ten googolplex.

The subject of the fuel rod is also of debate. Uranium's half-life means the battery would not expire for hundreds of years, also Duncan and Jeremie would have been severely poisoned from being around both enriched Uranium and the depleted fuel rod - therefore it seems Lead-210, a Uranium isotope with a twenty-two year half-life, is the used fuel - it only gives off particle radiation, which cannot penetrate the perspex sheath of the fuel rods, and which could be converted to energy by the same process we see in the scanners when a body is destroyed and rebuilt during virtualization and materialization, respectively.

The outer casing of the Supercomputer's resting place while dormant.

Computer Vision Syndrome Means That Eye Care Is Vital

Computer Vision Syndrome Means That Eye Care Is Vital, Say Health Researchers

Oasis Beauty, New Zealands leading expert in sensitive skin products has developed a natural eye care preparation, Lips & Lashes, to counter the effects of our increasing use of illuminated screen-based technology, which researchers claim is leading to peak levels of computer vision syndrome, with up to 90% of people who use a computer for work suffering from symptoms.

Lips & Lashes creator, Stephanie Evans says: `For more and more of us staring at a computer monitor for hours on end has become a part of our lives. Researchers now know that this reduces the blink rate and so the lubrication of our eyes. Not only that the demands of the light intensity and focussing unnaturally can put a real strain on your eyes and the muscles around them. Researchers have given the name computer vision syndrome (CVS) to the eye problems caused by computer use because it is not one specific eye problem but a range of eyestrain, pain experienced by computer users.

Known for its signature brand Oasis Sun SPF30+, the Canterbury based manufacturer has developed Lips & Lashes a topical cream, which includes: Aloe vera & cucumber provide a soothing action for sensitive and sore eyes. Honey, rosehip oil, calendula oil, apricot kernel oil & vitamin Eall work to moisturise the area around the eyes without weighing the skin down. Arnica reduces inflammation and bruising so it helps with puffiness and dark circles. It also helps promote hair growth and is used in hair preparations at 1-2% so its what we use to grow your eyelashes! Vitamin E lotion is also a well-known way to increase hair growth. Glycerin and hyaluronic acid (HA) are humectants that absorb moisture and swell, filling fine lines and wrinkles. Green tea is a super powerful antioxidant that is a wonderful fighter destroying nasty cell-damaging molecules in our body, known as free radicals. This keeps us looking fabulous for longer!

Research shows computer eye problems are common. Somewhere between 50% and 90% of people who work at a computer screen have at least some symptoms of eye trouble. In addition, children using mobile video games or who use computers at school also can experience eye problems, especially if the lighting and computer position are less than ideal.

Computer vision syndrome is similar to other repetitive stress injuries at work caused by carrying out the same motion repeatedly and gets worse the longer you continue the activity. There's no evidence that computer vision syndrome causes any long-term damage to the eyes. However, regular computer use can be the source of significant discomfort.

Stephanie explains: Using an illuminated screen means that the eyes continuously move backwards and forwards from the screen to other objects such as papers and then back up to type and require a lot of effort from eye muscles. It is much more challenging to your eyes than reading a book or piece of paper, which means that eye care becomes even more important, especially as we get older. The skin around our eyes is the one of the first places to show signs of ageing because its up to 10 times thinner than the skin on our face and is surrounded by constantly moving muscles. The four main areas of concern in this area are under eye dark circles, crows feet, wrinkles and puffiness. Weve developed Lips & Lashes to help reduce these symptoms.
