Cummings: Why spirituality is being included in health care

Have you noticed spiritualitys growing role in health care?

For example, MidMichigan Health has a Spiritual Care program to serve the spiritual needs of all patients, as well as those of hospital staff and physicians. Earlier this year, it held its 13th (yes, thats 13th) annual Spiritual Care Seminar.

And, at its annual conference in New York this spring, the Healthcare Chaplaincy Network presented results of six studies that it said should be used to demonstrate the value-added of spiritual care including chaplaincy care to the healthcare systems that include and fund chaplaincy positions.

But what do we mean here by the word spirituality? And how might it impact a patients experience and actual health outcomes?

A broad definition of spirituality that is inclusive and intentionally not synonymous with religious was developed by a 2009 national Consensus Conference on palliative care sponsored by the Archstone Foundation.

It states: Spirituality is the aspect of humanity that refers to the way individuals seek and express meaning and purpose and the way they experience their connectedness to the moment, to self, to others, to nature, and to the significant or sacred.

The George Washington Institute for Spirituality and Health, founded in 2001, is a leading organization on education and clinical issues related to spirituality and health as its name suggests. Its founder and director, Dr. Christina Puchalski, participated in the development of a 2014 World Health Organization resolution on palliative (end of life) care that includes a reference to the spiritual aspects of patient care.

At a talk earlier this year at Western Michigan University, Puchalski focused on the importance of including spirituality in palliative care and how this palliative care model could be extended throughout, and thereby benefit, the entire spectrum of care.

In the face of loss or impending death, patients may ask questions like, What has meaning for me now? or What matters most in my life? Puchalski noted, however, that: We dont have to be dying to ask these questions. She spoke of care providers seeking how to help people, and not just those that are dying, but everybody who has suffering.

Puchalskis leading edge work of the last 20 years has been to bring more compassionate care to the field of medicine by focusing on the connection between spirituality and compassion.

International yoga festival begins in Haridwar

HARIDWAR: An international festival on yoga, culture and spirituality kicked off on Thursday at Haridwar-based Dev Sanskriti Vishwavidyalaya with nearly 2000 delegates from 20 countries including the US, Korea and Israel participating in the five-day extravaganza.

Held every year by the university, it is the fourth edition of the event in which 20 spiritual luminaries and 30 yogic experts from across the country and abroad are taking part.

Addressing the inaugural session of the festival, noted spiritual leader from the US and Mahatma Gandhi award winner for his contribution to world peace, Patrick Mcculum said India's spiritual richness of which yoga is an integral part sets it apart from other countries of the world.

"If ever there is a cultural and spiritual reawakening in the world, it will definitely begin from India," he said.

DSVV chancellor Pranav Pandya who also spoke on the occasion said, yoga, culture and spiritualism do not only enrich an individual's life but also contribute richly to the building of a nation.

"Collective character of a country is at the root of its overall growth.

"The importance of yoga, culture and spiritualism is great considering the vital role they play in character building which finally deteremines the direction in which a nation moves," he said.

National Human Rights Commission director general D R Kartikeyan said religion basically is a concept which connects one individual to another and yoga is an important offshoot of it.

Located close to the banks of the Ganga in the Himalayan foothills, DSVV is a UGC recognised university which holds the event every year to familiarize participants with the benefits of yoga in their spiritutal growth and the country's rich cultural heritage.

Spirituality of growth

Vugt: Spirituality of growth

IN MY previous column we have seen that Fr. Ben Alforque learned the hard way that Christians must forgive others and may not judge them. That is part of the spirituality of growth.

Modern society has an obsession for growth which shows itself in all spheres of life. The economy has to grow if the economic growth is half percent lower than the previous year, prestigious companies are closing up business because they fear that the growth within 10 years will be lower than today.

This spirit of the economy pervades all spheres of social life. When it concerns your career, you always want to go higher to the top of the social scale. First you look for a job that will keep your head above water, next you want to become a teacher or a professor so that you can propagate your ideas or give guidance to people, may be even a renowned professor who appears on TV.

If you are a lawyer, you aspire to become the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court or may be to be a judge in the International Court of Justice in The Hague. If you are after worldly growth, no achievement is good enough. On top of the mountain that you have reached already, you see other mountain tops looming up where you want to climb to.

The earthly desire for growth is treacherous. We see this happening also in other spheres of life, like in sports or in love life. When you got addicted to growth, you never get enough. You always want more, always better, standing still is growing backwards and before you know it, you lose yourself in a whirlwind of unfulfilled expectations. You dont know anymore how to cope with yourself and with all those people around you.

It is often said that the obsession for growth finds its origin in the Christian religion. And indeed, in Christian faith we see that nothing in this world is good enough. We have to strive after perfection in order to reach the heavenly Kingdom.

The parable of the sower seems to suggest this also: we must listen to the Word of God and live it to the full. Elsewhere Jesus says: be perfect as your heavenly Father is perfect. Those who dont are like the seeds which fell in rocky soil and they will disappear into nothing.

But recently, I discovered that there is another version of the parable of the sower. One version appears in the Gospel of Matthew (Mt. 13, 4-9) and the other in the same chapter (Mt. 13, 24-30). The latter says that God, the sower, has sown the seeds of the Word of God and they all grow up and become a full-grown crop. But while growing up, there appear also weeds which have grown up together with the good crop.

According to the sower, the weeds have come from bad seeds which were sown by the enemy in the midst of the night. The servants want to pull out the weeds right away but the sower, who knows all about the good crop and those weeds, tells them not to do that. The sower knows that the good crop is strong enough and will survive. The weeds represent mens shortcomings and failures. The sower says: let them be, you cannot root them out. People have to live with their failures and shortcomings. They are part of the growing pains.

The Christian tradition has taught us the opposite: you must fight against your shortcomings and cut them out. You must try to be perfect as your heavenly Father is perfect. But this version of the parable seems to suggest that you must give space to yourself to grow but also to give space to others to grow.
