Signature HomeNow Bringing Spirituality to Home Health Clients

Louisville, KY (PRWEB) November 07, 2014

Signature HomeNow, a provider of skilled home health services with locations throughout Florida, is expanding its service offerings to meet not only the physical needs of its patients, but also spiritual.

Formerly ConfiCare, Signature HomeNow was acquired by Signature HealthCARE (SHC) earlier this year and now operates as a division of SHC, a long-term care operator that is expanding to become an integrated care network servicing the entire post-acute care continuum. SHC already has a thriving interfaith Department of Spirituality that supports full-time chaplains in every Signature facility. This department also operates The Compassion Fund, a 501c3 nonprofit that has doled out more than $1.1 million to individuals in need following catastrophic events, and provides numerous other unique service programs and initiatives.

Now, Signature HomeNow is folding SHCs Spirituality Pillar and culture into its own.

As part of Signature HealthCARE, we share the vision to radically change the landscape of health care, said Signature HomeNow CEO Vickie Norvell. Bringing spirituality to people in their own homes demonstrates our commitment to meet our patients at their point of physical and spiritual need, and to help those we serve live well.

A study published last year by the Institute for Research and Innovation in Social Services, in Scotland, found benefit in offering spiritual care for aging populations. The study, titled Spirituality and Ageing: Implications for the Care and Support of Older People, found that developmental support and person-centered care are crucial to maximize a persons ability to age well, and that spiritual care is a part of this person-centered approach.

While spiritual care can be provided in numerous ways regardless of physical location, chaplain services to Signature HomeNow clients include emotional support, comfort, and spiritual guidance and nourishment.

We believe we can expand our spiritual model from the long-term care setting into the home, giving support and defying suffering, and the fear of loneliness, said Dianne Timmering, Vice President of Spirituality and Legislative Affairs for Signature HealthCARE. We can also help remind loved ones to take their prescribed medicines and other means to maintain health and wellness, elongating the joys of life in the beloved comforts and smells of home.

UI graduate student studies rare, dying Korean art

UI graduate student studies rare, dying Korean art

BY AARON WALKER | NOVEMBER 07, 2014 5:00 AM

University of Iowa graduate student Steph Rue is reinvigorating her Korean heritage by helping revitalize a fading artistic tradition.

Rue studies hanji, the ancient Korean art of papermaking and its connection with Buddhist spirituality. Hanji literally translates to the paper of Korea.

I am Korean-American. I kind of came back to my heritage through finding the hanji, Rue said. It allows me to understand a lot more of my own culture. Artifacts made with this paper can speak a lot to traditional Korean heritage and developments in Korean history.

Rue said hanji is a dying art.

While in the West it is rare to find paper more than 400 years old, hanji artifacts date back to the eighth century.

But hanji is not only used as paper.

Its a thick material, made from the inner bark of mulberry trees, that can be used as anything from wallpaper to armor.

Its so durable, they say Korean paper lasts 1,000 years, Rue said.

The Sufi music festival invites all those who want to drown in the sea of divinity

If you ask dervishes where to find God, they will not tell you a place but a person. God is found within self, and what better way to find self than a Sufi fest? For centuries Sufism has been helping people connect themselves with their inner self and the supreme being. The pirs and murshids have carried on the tradition of haal and sama'a sinces ages via poetry, dance and music. National Centre for Performing Arts (NCPA) has been contributing to this tradition for five years now. This year too promises to bring a platter full of mysticism.

Poetry and verses Sama'a, The Mystic Ecstasy Festival of Sufi music will open with Muzaffar Ali's works. There will be a screening of 'Breathe into Me', a documentary by him on Mevlana Rumi's poetry, followed by the actual rendering of Rumi's verses by Ali as a dialogue between the flute and him. India has been the blessed land where spirituality flourished transgressing all manmade barriers. In India, The Garden Of Saints Ali offers a glimpse of Sufi shrines in the country highlighting the contribution of Sufi mystics in spreading the message of humanity and love. Nisbat, on the other hand, depicts a spiritual journey of a young man at the Dargah of Khwaja Moinuddin Chishti of Ajmer Sharif, one of the most revered monuments in India dedicated to Sufi-Chishti order.

Experience the haal Qawwali is the predominant genre through which Sufi music finds expression in the Indian subcontinent. Although performed mainly at Sufi shrines (dargah), today the genre has gained mainstream popularity. Qawwali is specially regarded as the most accessible musical form leading to spiritual crescendo. Warsi brothers (Nasir and Nazir Ahmed Khan) from Hyderabad, who trace their family lineage to the legendary musician Tanras Khan, will present dargahi qawwalis composed by various Sufi saints at the fest. "We are trying to give people a holistic experience of the Sufi tradition through this year's festival," says Suvarnalata Rao, head of programming for Indian music at the NCPA.

Musical musings The fest will also see a dance performance by Ziya Azazi a Turkish-born Austrian dancer and choreographer. His presentation, Dervish in Progress is a contemporary interpretation of traditional Sufi dance, reflecting Azazi's personal, artistic, conceptual and emotional analysis. It aims to simultaneously represent the physical awareness and a high state of meditation. The core idea of love, longing and union with the beloved, as espoused in the Sufi songs has an evergreen appeal with people from all of walks life, transcending the physical boundaries of region, religion, caste and creed. Today, besides the traditional repertoire a large number of songs are sung under the Sufi label. And nobody has been able to connect to people through his sufi voice better than Kailash Kher. His performance will include a bouquet of sufiana compositions from traditional repertoire and also songs based in Bollywood.

NCPA will host Sama'a from November 7 to 9

New university combines science and spirituality

Saint Katherine College is a new liberal arts school that was founded in 2010 by physician and scientist, Frank Papatheofanis.

The San Marcos-based school is a four-year, nonprofit Christian college with a curriculum that blends arts and science. For example, students learn about 19th century British literature at the same time theyre being taught about European monetary policy.

Papatheofanis, 55, was raised in Chicago and moved to San Diego in 1995 after accepting a faculty position at UC San Diegos School of Medicine. Hes worked in everything from radiology to public health, and is currently Saint Katherines president.

The Rancho Santa Fe resident tells us why he started his own university.

Q: What inspired you to Saint Katherine College?

A: I have been fortunate to learn and teach at acclaimed research universities like UCSD, Johns Hopkins and the University of Illinois. Inquiry and research were critical to what I did at those institutions. However, one comes to a point where inquiry without meaning is hollow. As a Christian, I knew that the mind was important to my identity. I started the college around the motto: Inquiry Seeking Wisdom. Wisdom is defined here as Christ. Our desire is to create a community of learners and teachers who passionately pursue their studies, but do so to grow in their love and pursuit of the Lord.

Q: Why does San Diego need a school like Saint Katherine?

A: The education landscape in San Diego is dominated by giant public universities and for-profits. Education cannot be served up cold. In other words, faculty and administrators are not merely interchangeable talking heads. It should matter to you what your professor thinks. Are they a person of integrity? What are their values? Are they community-focused? Do they serve the poor and disadvantaged, or merely talk about it in class? We want to create a place where the big questions of life matter and continue to be worked out. This college offers San Diegans and others a place where the option to learn and teach Christianly matters.

Q: Is this school only open to Orthodox Christian students?

A: It is open to anyone. Like other faith-based colleges, we anticipate our Orthodox Christian student body will include approximately 20 to 25 percent of our students. So far, students who come from the Roman Catholic tradition and traditional Protestant denominations seem to be drawn to the college.

Boy George: I've always been fascinated with spirituality and religion

Boy George/Facebook

Boy George

Culture Club singer Boy George discussed his spirituality in an intimate interview published Wednesday.

The singer-songwriter was raised in the Catholic faith but says he embraced Buddhism a few years ago.

"I've been practising Nichiren Buddhism for about four years," he told Huffpost Live. "What it does is it gives me a period in the morning and in the evening to really focus on what I want to do, and how I want the day to go."

One of the main practices of Nichiren Buddhism is chanting mantras, primarily "Nam-myoho-renge-kyo," or "I devote myself to the Lotus Sutra."

"One of the most important things about chanting is that you're constantly praying for peace, and you're praying for the happiness of other people even people that you're in conflict with," Boy George explained. "If there's anyone that you have a problem with, put them in your prayers. It's amazing what it does. It kind of dissipates any of that kind of negativity."

The Grammy Award-winner said that spiritual people have had a strong influence on his life through his 53 years.

"I've always been fascinated with spirituality, religion... I always say I'm Catholic in my complications, and Buddhist in my aspirations. I was raised a Catholic, so I have a Catholic sensibility..."

"Catholic guilt," host Caroline Modarressy-Tehrani interjected.
