Spanish Market combines art, tradition, spirituality

ALBUQUERQUE (KRQE) All over New Mexico, theres inspiration for creating art whether its through music, food, paintings or carvings. Those last two examples there will be on display at this weekends winter Spanish Market.

Its art that has been created for hundreds of years in New Mexico the same innovation that went into making it from the beginning carries on today.

In the early days when the missions were being built, there was difficulty in getting statues built for them, those type of religious artifacts for the missions and so this art has kind of evolved, said Adan Carriaga.

Creating the artwork dates back literally hundreds of years and is pretty much only found in this part of the country in New Mexico. Its all going to be showcased at this weekends Spanish Market.

First of all, I think this kind of art needs more exposure for people to know that native people in this, here in New Mexico, can create this kind of work to see retablos and bultos and straw applicae, tin work, theres a lot of it, the various forms of art that we do, and I hope they enjoy it, said artist Rodolfo Parga.

While it may be an art form that was created hundreds of years ago, its still evolving.

I learned a new innovative technique which allowed me to combine essentially all the elements of traditional art and then finalized by using straw applicae for design, said artist Charlie Sanchez Jr.

For some, they discovered they had the gift while completing other works of art.

I wasnt really a santero, I was more of a furniture maker, but I got encouraged by them to start doing this. Ive been carving most of my life so that came in pretty handy, said artist Federico Prudencio.

Then, theres the next generation carrying on the tradition.

Healing touch: Arbon & Goodson Energy Practitioners

Stoughton's Elizabeth Goodson says that her position as minister of Stoughton's Grace United Church and her partnership in her business, Arbon & Goodson, Energy Practitioners, allows her to explore, explain, and appreciate many aspects of spirituality and healing.

I am a partner in a spirituality business with Hazel Arbon, who works in Regina and lives in Vibank. She is also a United Church minister. We are colleagues in the ministry and we started planning creative worship services together, when she was in Weyburn and I was in Kipling.

The pair have almost 50 years combined ministry experience in the United Church of Canada and each have completed two years of specialized training to become spiritual directors. Both have completed Healing Pathways training to become Healing Touch practitioners, both are reiki masters, and both have completed a one-year program through Stonebridge College, UK to become certified Crystal Healer practitioners.

We've done three seminar retreats here in Stoughton and two events in other locations, she adds.

Because the United Church is very accepting and very curious about all types of spirituality, I have been able to train as a reiki master and I am also qualified in healing touch, crystal healing, and tarot exploration. My interest in these areas has been growing for years. My grandmother was interested in all this stuff. People are eager to learn more, and I want to help them get spiritual nourishment.

Know the divine in you: Smita Jayakar

Actress Smita Jayakar's account on spirituality is not a run-of-the mill book but helps you connect with your higher self

She has played mom to almost every other star in Bollywood from Shah Rukh Khan, Aishwarya Rai, Aamir Khan to Ranbir Kapoor and Ali Fazal now (in Sonali Cable). But Smita Jayakar can relate most to her characters in Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam and Astitva. She has essayed various characters of a woman as a mother, a wife, daughter on screen, theatre and television. But there's one aspect of this actress which not many know. She is a motivational speaker, can talk to spirits, cleanses auras and teaches chakra dhyan. Now with her debut book Before Tomorrow, Jayakar is all set to unravel her spiritual self to the world. Experts from an interview...

Mostly people start with fiction as a writer, you chose spirituality... Fiction never interested me. I left reading fiction almost 30 years now since I got into spirituality. The first year I joined films, I met my guru and from there my entire spiritual journey begun with Prabhuji. And ever since I have never gone back to reading fiction. I will never pick up a book on fiction. Why should I write something unreal when I know what is real? (chuckles)

How did you get into spirituality? Honestly, even I don't know how the change came about. I was introduced to my first guru by my husband. I went with nothing in my mind, I didn't know where it was heading and didn't know where it would end. But then I met him everyday with a ll new questions... that somehow gave me something... at metaphysical level, I started liking it... and that's how I got sucked into it. I started enjoying it so much that I wanted to explore more. I went to Oneness and stayed connected to them for 20 years. It was there that a majority of my learning actually happened. I did a lot or processes there. I could feel a lot of cleansing happening...

Go on... Gradually they asked me hold a talk. I was not ready but my gurus saw something in me and I went to Pune for a talk on spirituality. The people really liked it and also asked for more. That boosted my confidence and then I started doing workshops and holding talks and conventions. Now I am taking workshops for almost 12 years...

Spirituality has many meanings... Just be what you are. Simplicity is what defines spirituality. It has become an issue now, but that's not what it is. People want to turn spiritual when they are old. You don't have to leave what you do to turn spiritual, you can party, eat non-veg and still be spiritual. You don't have to sacrifice to be spiritual. It is your connect to the divine, and how you do it is absolutely your business.

What change has it brought in you? I was a horrible human being before, and I didn't know better. I didn't know how to accept things in life. Whatever happens to you is for a reason. But when you turn spiritual the perception towards life changes. You remain the same, it's only how you look at things changes.

A spiritual person has to be religious? There's nothing like God. There's is this universal cosmic energy which holds us together. Spirituality doesn't mean that everyday you have to pray to God. It is just being yourself. People don't know the difference between religion and spirituality. The connect with your higher self is utmost important. That has nothing to do with how you pray, how much you pray and all... There is some consciousness which holds us together, just believe in that some power. 'Who am I' is the last step in spirituality. You don't have to be an ascetic to be a spiritual. Look at Narendra Modi, he is also very spiritual. But if he decides to become an ascetic, won't our government come to a standstill?

How do we know we need a guru? If you are inclined towards spirituality, you will also have to look for a guru. In spirituality also, there are many things to learn. So you should look for a guru for your specific need... that's called spiritual shopping. And if you are on the spiritual path you will know you need a guru. There's always a knock on your heart's door, and when you are ready, you will accept the invitation. So many times there is a knock, we have to adhere to that voice.

You have many gurus... You get stagnated in every phase, there is always a need to step up, learn more... Now I am with Dadashriji. A lot of things have opened up, am still learning, having newer experiences. There is this need to give back to the universe. The universe, nature, mother earth give us so much. There is a payback time. You have to give back. And I too am trying to give back. The more you give, the more you receive. You give hatred, and will get hatred; you give love, you will get love. Give and receive is the law of the universe.

Pope's Address to Syro-Malabar Rite Catholics from India

"May this time of celebration and intense spirituality help you to contemplate the marvelous works accomplished by the Lord in the lives and deeds of these new saints." Vatican City, November 24, 2014 (Zenit.org) | 485 hits

Here is the Vatican-provided translation of the Holy Father's address to Syro-Malabar Rite Catholics who came to Rome for Sunday's canonization of Saints Kuriakose Elias Chavara and Euphrasia Eluvathingal, who are both from Kerala, India.

* * *

Dear brothers and sisters,

I am pleased to join you in giving thanks to the Lord for the canonization of two new Indian saints, both from the State of Kerala. I offer warm greetings to Cardinal George Alencherry, to the Bishops and priests, men and women religious, and to each of you, dear brothers and sisters of the Syro-Malabar Rite. You have come to Rome in great numbers on this very important occasion, and have been able to live days of faith and ecclesial communion, praying also at the tombs of the Apostles. May this time of celebration and intense spirituality help you to contemplate the marvelous works accomplished by the Lord in the lives and deeds of these new saints.

Father Kuriakose Elias Chavara and Sister Euphrasia Eluvathingal, who was a member of the religious Institute founded by him, remind each of us that Gods love is the source, the support and the goal of all holiness, while love of neighbour is the clearest manifestation of love for God. Father Kuriakose Elias was a religious, both active and contemplative, who generously gave his life for the Syro-Malabar Church, putting into action the maxim sanctification of oneself and the salvation of others. For her part, Sister Euphrasia lived in profound union with God so much so that her life of holiness was an example and an encouragement to the people, who called her Praying Mother.

Dear brothers and sisters,

May these new saints help you to treasure their lessons of evangelical living. Follow in their footsteps and imitate them, in a particular way, through love of Jesus in the Eucharist and love of the Church. Thus you will advance along the path to holiness. With this hope and the assurance of my prayers, I impart to each of you and to all your loved ones my Apostolic Blessing.
