Spirituality, like religion, involves a discussion of faith

Last week, NPR aired a series on youth and religion. The general point was that participants in the group discussion did not identify with established religion, though some of them prayed. A week earlier, NPR reported a mom in San Diego who pulled her child from a fourth-grade yoga class on the grounds that the school was teaching religion -- in this case, Hinduism.

I was interested in all the comments, but I was surprised at the confusion between religion and spirituality in both reports. There was no discussion of faith. The group discussion didn't address whether participants believe in God. The yoga class didn't seem to even mention the names of Hindu gods, much less teach belief in them. The objection was to bowing to the sun and thanking the sun for giving life prior to the yoga "sun salute."

This omission of the presence of God made discussion of prayer odd. It had more of an element of superstition, or perhaps of feeling desperate, than of adoration, contrition, thanksgiving and supplication (ACTS, the mnemonic I learned in third grade). Somebody said once you can recognize a Catholic by asking a question, any question, about religion. We will look off into a corner, trying to remember what the Baltimore Catechism said.

Granted, Catholics can fixate on religion. Still, religion is a sound base for spirituality. But it's not the only base. We are made of spirit and matter, and to bow to the sun or send darts of supplication into the universe recognizes and honors our spirits, our souls, and it recognizes our longing for the divine. Think of religion, ethics and human love all as launching pads into the spiritual life.

Megan Fox covers Esquire magazine, talks spirituality and stardom

This is 40 actress Megan Fox reveals her surprising spirituality and her fears of stardom with Esquire magazine, explaining that she began speaking in tongues at the young age of 8.

During the interview, Fox explains her inability to trust since shooting into stardom. Esquire writer Stephen Marchie notes that when Fox read about the New York nanny who murdered two children it prompted her to fire her own who was there to help her tend to the night feedings for her three month old son, Noah.

On the cover of Esquire, Fox dons a bra and underwear showing off her always sexy figure. She explains that her previous roles in such films as Transformers did nothing for her personality as it only portrayed her as a sex-symbol. I felt powerless in that image," she explains. "I didn't feel powerful. It ate every other part of my personality, not for me but for how people saw me, because there was nothing else to see or know. That devalued me. Because I wasn't anything. I was an image. I was a picture. I was a pose."

Touching base on spirituality, Fox notes she has read the entire book of Revelations, noting her own spiritual beliefs. According to Us Weekly, Fox attended the Pentecostal Church in Tennessee where she explains she began speaking in tongues at the age of eight.

She states, The energy is so intense in the room that you feel like anything can happen. They're going to hate that I compare it to this, but have you ever watched footage of a Santeria gathering or someone doing voodoo? You know how palpable the energy is? Whatever's going on there, it's for real."

She adds, "I've seen people be healed. Even now, in the church I go to, during Praise and Worship I could feel that I was maybe getting ready to speak in tongues, and I'd have to shut it off because I don't know what that church would do if I started screaming out in tongues in the back."

Fox discusses her believe in aliens, the loch ness monster and more in the February issue of Esquire.

The light of spirituality

New Delhi, Jan. 16 -- Spirituality is both 'a science of being' and 'an art of living'. As the science of spirit, spirituality not only differentiates the 'physical body' from the 'sentient being or soul', but also delineates the supremacy of soul over the senses. Spirituality delves deep and depicts the true identity of 'inner self' as a microscopic sentient point of divine light located somewhere between and behind the eye brows. It subtly conveys that all human beings are basically 'spiritual beings' with 'human experiences'.

After taking successive births in the mundane body, nature, community and society, the soul's reserve of latent positive energy gets expended and gradually depletes. And its original nature undergoes change from pure to impure and from positive to negative.

To save humanity from further degeneration, spiritual masters come to promote the practice of spirituality and to popularise it as an art of living. Prajapita Brahma, the corporeal founder of the Brahma Kumaris institution was one such spiritual leader.

He lived and taught spirituality by his own actions to bring positive change and peace in the lives of thousands of people. He created leaders, not followers.

Enlightened by a series of divine visions and godly revelations in the late 1930s, he underwent spiritual empowerment as a strong tool to arrest moral and ethical degeneration in society. Thereby, he set in motion the law of anti-entropy in the lives of people who embraced spirituality as a way of life and became empowered.

His teachings remind us to remain in consciousness and in search of peace, love and happiness. It enhances the quality and quantum of positive energy self-enabling you to experience harmony. It brings balance between material and moral and makes life blissful.

At meeting in Austin, a confluence of atmospheric science and spirituality

As ashen skies began soaking Central Texas last week, meteorologists from across the country and beyond met in Austin to ponder something not heard on the nightly weather forecasts: spirituality.

In a meeting room at the Austin Convention Center, about a hundred atmospheric scientists contemplated questions about the roles of science and faith in their lives. In the lively dialogue, they asked how they could help educate people of faith about global warming and the environment.

Do we check our spirituality at the door at scientific conferences? asked Timothy Miner, who led the discussion at the annual meeting of the American Meteorological Society.

Over four days, more than 3,000 participants attended scores of panels and town hall-style meetings addressing weighty topics one would expect atmospheric scientists to sink their teeth into. But Tuesdays session stood out like snow in Austin. Miner, a former weather officer and pilot for the Air Force, joked that it surely was one of the few times spirituality and atmospheric science were discussed in the same setting.

The American Meteorological Societys official statement on climate change is that Earths lower atmosphere, ocean and land surface are warming; the sea level is rising; and snow cover, mountain glaciers and Arctic sea ice are shrinking. It cites the dominant cause of warming since the 1950s as human activity and says that avoiding future warming will require a large, rapid reduction in global greenhouse gas emissions.

In 2011, a U.N. committee called for faith-based initiatives to promote stewardship of the Earth, and it urged scientists to help educate religious communities and organizations about the future of the planet.

In an interview after Tuesdays discussion, Miner, now a commercial airline pilot and a chaplain who lives in Virginia, said scientists have a responsibility to share their knowledge with the world so that Earth can be preserved for future generations.

Its not just my personal faith to God, but my responsibilities to the greater body, to all of us together, Miner said.

In a show of hands, the vast majority of participants at the meeting said they belong to religious faiths. But some said they sometimes struggle sharing science with people of faith who have doubts about global warming or who believe that God created Earth and humans can do little to influence it.

Barry Goldsmith, a warning coordination meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Brownsville, said hes often asked if he believes in global warming.

Experts dwell on links of science, spirituality, mental health

Bangalore, Jan 12 (IANS) Academics from India and five other countries Saturday stressed on link between science, spirituality and mental health to help mankind cope with increasing pressures of modern life.

They were speaking at symposium on "Science, Spirituality and Mental Health", organized here by the Art of Living (AoL) Foundation.

The symposium's objective was to highlight "significant scientific research that shows how spiritual practices from Vedic traditions can positively impact the mental health and wellness of an individual in meeting the challenges and increasing pressures of the modern day world", AoL said in a release.

Academics from India, Indonesia, Norway, Australia, Canada and US took part.

"Yoga is a science of mind - it begins with modulating the consciousness. And quantum theory also speaks of the fact that everything is made of one energy; field called mind and space that is called consciousness," AoL founder Sri Sri Ravi Shankar said inaugurating the symposium.

Matcheri Keshavan, professor at Harvard medical school, dwelt on how "the collaboration of Eastern wisdom and modern western science to achieve optimum results in mental and physical wellness."
