NEW YORK(CBSNewYork) Most people go to the spa to soothe their bodies but now, many spas want to help you soothe your soul.
When Dr. Josefina Miranda is done with her day of healing she heads to the spa for some healing of her own.
I usually feel more focused, she told CBS 2s Dick Brennan.
Miranda doesnt just go to the spa to pamper her body, she also goes to enrich her mind and renew her spirit.
I have more clarity, she said.
Its a growing trend that has many people seeking spirituality at the spa instead of houses of worship, and it has prompted spas to offer new services to meet those needs, according to the International Spa Association.
The treatments are known as mindful services and include special massages which are said to align the bodys energies along with hot oil treatments that help the body and mind integrate.
Theyre really taking away with them a new perspective, Dr. Sheila Patel, Medical Director, The Chopra Center, explained, They have an opportunity to self reflect.

Spirituality and its connection to the words and actions of ritual are not always easy to teach.
While I do teach classes on spirituality and ritual with many age groups, I spend much of my time working with teenagers. One of my chief goals, as I prepare them for the rite of passage of Bar/Bat Mitzvah is to give them some tools for dealing with the connection of theology, spirituality and ritual action.
With these young adults I try to think outside the box and use different classroom experiments to illustrate the concepts of spirituality and prayer. One of my recent experiments focused on the Jewish value of syncing.
In Judaism we try to get ritual act in harmony with a particular story at the time the story took place. For example, we have a Passover Seder to retell and re-live the experience of the Exodus from Egypt on the anniversary of that event.
This happens again and again in Judaism as we try to sync personal experience with the grander story of the Jewish people and all of the cycles of nature that constantly flow around us. In this particular activity I challenged my students to see how many mirrors they could line up in the beam of flash light.
Could we get the energy of one act (light on a mirror) to connect withe next act, creating a circuit? They ran back and forth across the large room, having one circle of light reflect to the next mirror. Last year when we attempted this, we did not have much success.
The flashlight was not strong enough and the beam of light diffused before we got many reflections. We had to position the mirrors right next to each other, making the effect very weak. This year I went and got a stronger light, from 20 lumens to 200 lumens. I figured that with a brighter light and a better plan we would have this reflected disc of light dancing across the room.
We were more successful for the first few reflections but then the light spread out and we ran into similar problems to the year before. That is until a student said, I have a stronger light.
Sure enough with even more light we created this awesome effect with light from one mirror/place flowing to the next. We had five or six discs of light reflecting back and forth across our darkened social hall. We had a great discussion about how we have to make adjustments and be a flexible to connect story and value and ritual.
The next morning as I thought about our progress from weaker to stronger light, I realized that while the increase of light was important to make our experiment successful it also highlighted one of the difficulties of modern religious experience.

Newswise WASHINGTON (Feb. 18, 2014) While spirituality played a significant role in health care for centuries, technological advances in the 20th century overshadowed this more human side of medicine. Christina Puchalski, M.D.94, RESD97, founder and director of the George Washington University (GW) Institute for Spirituality and Health and professor of medicine at the GW School of Medicine and Health Sciences (SMHS), and co-authors published a commentary in Academic Medicine on the history of spirituality and health, the movement to reclaim medicines spiritual roots, and the future of this field.
Spirituality, defined as a persons search for meaning, purpose, and connection, is now incorporated into the curricula of more than 75 percent of U.S. medical schools curricula that was developed and implemented first at SMHS. In 2012, Oxford published the first textbook on spirituality and health. National and International organizations have recognized the role of spirituality in patient-centered care. This didnt happen without the tireless efforts of Puchalski, her colleagues at GW including Jim Blatt, M.D., director of the Clinical Learning and Simulation Skills Center and professor of medicine at SMHS, the support she received at GW, and grants from organizations such as the John Templeton Foundation.
The integration of spirituality in to our medical culture is crucial for creating compassionate, patient-centered physicians, said Puchalski. It changes our health system from merely emphasizing physical suffering. Rather, physicians are taught to respond to all patients suffering with compassion, recognizing that health is more than the absence of disease. This is when healing, defined as patients ability to find hope and meaning even in the midst of suffering, can occur.
The Academic Medicine paper includes:
- A report on the National Competencies in Spirituality and Health (NCSH), which was created at a consensus conference of faculty from seven medical schools and is being reported in the paper for the first time. The NCSH will organize efforts in this developing field within medical education and in national and international organizations.
- Information on the GW Institute for Spirituality and Health-Templeton Reflection Rounds Initiative, a program supported by the John Templeton Foundation. The program provides clerkship students the opportunity to reflect on patient encounters and develop their own inner resources to address the suffering of others.
- Commentary on the future direction of the field of spirituality and health.
In the coming years, we hope the field of spirituality and health will have a more global reach, with a focus on interprofessional education, said Puchalski. We also anticipate a full integration of spirituality and health education: From the first year of medical school, into residency, and continuing into professional development.

The Search for the Spiritual in Art, an interfaith, inter-museum collaboration that begin in 1995, picks up again this year with a five-week series of Wednesday lectures and tours around the theme Spiritual Pilgrimage in Art.
Whether to Graceland or the Holy Land, pilgrimage captures the imagination of people of all faiths, says Abby Schwartz,interim director of the Skirball Museum at Hebrew Union College-Jewish Institute of Religion.
Two years ago the series explored the theme of music, worship and faith.
