MORRIS TWP. Transformation and Hope,the Annual Spirituality Convocation, sponsored by the Center for Ministry and Spirituality at the College of Saint Elizabeth, 2 Convent Road, offers a day of spiritual discussion and reflection facilitated by scholars in a variety of topics, including theology, philosophy, education, ministry, and meditation.
The event, which takes place in the colleges Annunciation Center on Saturday, April 5 features morning and afternoon keynote addresses, Morning Prayer, a choice of two out of 11 workshops, and concludes with Mass in Holy Family Chapel. The day will include a Spanish or English speaking track.

Rev. Jan Michael Joncas, theologian, author, and composer/arranger of On Eagles Wings, will deliver the morning keynote address, Through the Valley of Death: Suffering, Hope and Transformation. Joncas, artist-in-residence and fellow of the Center for Catholic Studies at the University of St. Thomas in St. Paul, Minn., will share his personal experiences in the stages of suffering through a neurological disorder, Guillain-Barre Syndrome, and will discuss effects on his spiritual life and his encounter with the God of rescue.
Joncas will be the celebrant for the Convocations concluding Mass.
The Rev. Terry Hershey, inspirational speaker, humorist, author, father, and Protestant minister, will give the afternoon keynote address Shall We Dance? in which he invites the audience to put aside their fears of fitting into a society-created box and dance as if nobody is watching. Hershey, featured on The Hallmark Channel, CNN, PBS, and NPR, paints a picture of life that is God centered, appreciated, humorous and shared with others.

According to Simon Fraser Universitys Bill Reid Centre for Northwest Coast Art Studies, the Haida practised tattooing for generations before European contact. The tattoo marks themselves were indicative of status, spiritual devotion and decoration, the centre explains on its website.
Individuals expressed their part in a social unit, a moiety, or a lineage through body art and adornment. In this sense, tattoos put a persons identity and spiritual connections on display through the use of crest figures and/or guardian spirits.
The designs used for tattooing were usually acquired through heredity, and crests of the bearer were dependent on their lineage.
A tattoo kit consisted of five cedar batons for skin-pricking, a lump of magnetite for pigment, a paint-grinding stone and a set of cedar brushes that were elaborately carved with crest figures.
Originally, sharp thorns, fish spines or bones were used for tattooing, the centre explains.
Later, as copper became more readily available, the tattooing implements were made of the metal and featured three needle points the middle point of the three being the longest which were attached to a handle. The handles were made of flat strips of ivory or bone, or from thin strips of wood that were of various widths.
Pigments that left a bluish tint on the skin were said to have been made from the charcoal of alder or buckbrush. Black pigment was made of magnetite, gunpowder, India ink or powdered charcoal. Red pigment was said to be made from Chinese vermilion or hematite.
First, the design was drawn onto the person to be tattooed in a dark pigment. The design would then be pricked in with the needles, and then more pigment would be rubbed into the design in order to achieve the desired hue.
Rarely did the chiefs do the tattooing themselves; instead, they hired skilled tattoo artists to perform the work. For men, tattoos were generally placed on the chest, the upper back between the shoulders, upper and lower arms, and the front of thighs and lower legs. For women, the chest, the shoulders, the forearms, hands and lower leg were tattooed.
When a chief held a potlatch he would select individuals to be honoured with tattoos, which would be unveiled during a dance at the potlatch. Even little kids were invited to this process but they werent tattooed until they stopped growing. The family would pay in blankets, and paint designs on their kids, a way of preparing them to go through the ceremony as they got older.

There is no doubt that Dr. Raymond Moody has changed the way many people look at dying. In his 1975 best-selling book Life After Life, Moody introduced the concept of the near-death experience (NDE), which has become a common phenomenon with the advances of medical resuscitation. The ongoing debate about the possibility of an afterlife has gained momentum since his 2010 book, Glimpses of Eternity, in which he describes the shared death experience, where those sitting with the dying person also experience out-of-bodysensations.
The son of a harshly cynical surgeon, military officer, and medic in WWII, Moody himself is a medical doctor, a doctor of philosophy, a counselor, and a prison psychologist, as well as the best-selling author of 12 books. He is the ultimate rationalist, and conversations with him inevitably veer back to his favorite subjects: the philosophy of language, the reasoning of ancient Greek philosopher Democritus and Platos The Republic, and his family, which includes his older children, a grandson, and two teens (13 and 15) still at home with him and his wife in ruralAlabama.
When Life After Life was published in 1975, had you any idea you were opening a national conversation on death and dying? No, I did not! The books first printing was 19,000, and I just hoped some would sell and get into the hands of some medical doctors and psychologists. [The book has since been translated into a dozen foreign languages and sold more than 14 millioncopies.]
You knew at the time thered be resistance to these ideas from skeptics, scientists, and clergymen. Has that dynamic changed in 40 years? There are still people who are holdouts to ideology. People into hard sciences, neurophysiology, often ignore a core philosophical question: What is the relationship between our unique, inner experience of conscious awareness and material substance? The answer is: We dont know, and some people are so terrified to say, I dontknow.
What are you afraid of? I have a fear of driving, and pain. [Laughs] But Im not afraid of death atall.
How would you describe your personal religion? I have never been religious. I talk to God every day, but hes never said a word to me about religion! I think the most powerful prayer issurrender.

As part of my job covering the spirituality beat here at ABC News, I've interviewed a gaggle of self-help gurus over the years. At times, these celebrity swamis have told me some very interesting things. At other times, they've made comments that have left me aghast, agog - or just deeply confused. This video listicle compiles my six favorite examples from the latter category.

Self-help is estimated to be an $11 billion a year industry. I sometimes call it "Happiness, Inc." Part of the reason I've insisted on interviewing so many of the gurus over the years is that I, too, was interested in getting a little bit happier. While I've picked up a few useful nuggets rooting around in this distinctly American subculture, mostly what I encountered was a riptide of inanity.
I did eventually find something extremely useful. Unlike what the gurus promise, however, it's not a miracle cure. There's no positive thinking, no promises of instant wealth.
