Wondrous Ordination by the Bishop of Colombo

A day of significance, a day of spirituality for the Church of Ceylon when the Bishop of Colombo Rt. Rev. Delo Canagasabey ordained 11 priests and three deacons into his fold of shepherds chosen by God on May 6 at the Cathedral of the Living Saviour in the presence of a large gathering who came from every nook and corner of the country to watch this great day of their own representative priests. It was a happy day for me too because my church, St. Stephens, Marawila also received a fully-fledged priests in Rev. Fr. Anil Wickramasinghe who too was ordained.

The Largest church in the country, the Cathedral which has a seating capacity of 3500 was jam-packed, many standing in the corridors and outside that could not accommodate the only 1000 seats of the day. People were happy because it was a day dedicated to God in those three hours of service.

After the priestly procession led by His Lordship to the altar, he blessed, welcomed and addressed those who were to be ordained.

We are gathered today to ordain a deacon and priest Christs holy church.Christ is the Head of the Church; He alone is the source of all Christian Ministry. Through the ages it is Christ who has called men and women to serve.

After Christs Resurrection and Ascension, the Holy Spirit gave gifts abundantly to the Church. Some were made Apostles, some prophets, some evangelists, some pastors and teachers to equip Gods people for their work of ministry and to buildup the Body of Christ.

By the Holy Spirit all who believe and are baptized receive a ministry to proclaim Jesus as Saviour, Lord and the source of abundant life, and to love and serve the people with whom they are Placed. In Christ they are to bring reconciliation and wholeness to all. They are to be the salt of the earth and light to the world.

We stand within the tradition of ministry of deacons priests and bishops. They are called and empowered to cooperate in fulfilling the whole mission of God. Our authority is in Scripture, Reason and in the Churchs continuing tradition through the ages, interpreted by the Holy Spirit, the source of all growth.

After the declaration of obedience to God, the new priests and deacons received the blessing of their parents. The three deacons also washed the feet of 12 people including children in a symbolic gesture to declare humility and love for each other and the church as Jesus Christ did. They were all greeted by a chorus of drumming to declare their commitment to God and the Church, to look after the poor and the needy and finally, His Lordship, Bishop Canagasabey addressed the ordained laying his hand on each of them:

God of grace, through Your Holy Spirit, gentle as a dove, living, burning as fire, empower you servants for the work in the church of God by the laying on of our hands, in the name of the father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.

May every grace of ministry rest on these your servantsKeep them strong and faithfulSteadfast in Jesus Christ our savior.

Olmsted Falls bottle cap project blends spirituality, recycling: Olmsted Dates and Data

OLMSTED FALLS, Ohio -- St. Mary of the Falls School has made its presence known more creatively on Taylor Street atColumbia Road.

A 4-by-8foot art collageappears at the corner of Columbia Road and Taylor Street.Students and art teacher Paulette Bohlen created the piece out of about 2,500 plastic bottle caps. The colorful project includes a heart in the middle of a cross standing on a hill, rainbow, and doves.

Paulette said the project "accidentally" occurred while researching ideas on Pinterest for something totally unrelated. She found an artist in southern Ohio, Michelle Stitzlein, who creates sculpture from recycled materials. Paulette was "inspired" by the color and textural quality of her work and believed it also was a great lesson in plastics and recycling.

Rev. Wally Hyclak, St. Mary of the Falls pastorand Principal Annemarie Rajnicek supported the idea and the project began as Paulette asked students and their families to bring in caps last fall.

"Saving caps really rippled into the community outside our school. Parents saved them at their workplace, extended families saved caps, caps were mailed to us from outside Ohio and from overseas," wrote Paulette in an email.

Students submitted designs based on the concept of love of God and His gift of nature. Paulette compiled all the recurring themes from their design sketches into the final composition. It was drawn and painted on the plywood. Then the gluing began. Students from kindergarten through grade 8 helped in that process. Paulette then drilled a screw into each cap to make the mural more weather resistant.

The project provided more than being an artistic creation.

"Throughout the process, we learned some lessons about recycling and the hazards to our environment of single use plastics like water bottles. We discovered artists trying to make the public aware of plastics in our oceans," Paulette wrote. "It was a fun, educational experience."

Be sure to visit the corner of Columbia and Taylorto see the project. You can't miss it.

City meeting Olmsted Falls is eligible to apply for $150,000 in Federal Community Development Block Grant funds that Cuyahoga County administers through the Department of Development. Funds may be used for housing, economic development and community improvement projects.

Professional athletes celebrate role of spirituality in sporting prowess

Gold Olympic Medalist, Jason Gardener MBE, is one of a group of Olympic, Paralympic and Special Olympic medalists who will gather in London in June for a unique conference to explore the relationship between spirituality and sport.

Organised by The Kairos Forum, which specialises in issues related to intellectual or Cognitive Disabilities the one day 'Spirit in Sport' Conference will be held on 12 June 2014 at the historic Charterhouse, London. Cristina Gangemi MA, co-director of The Kairos Forum said: Jason Gardener is one of the most decorated sprinters in British history. We are absolutely delighted that he joins us to share his riveting account of his journey in sport and share very real insights into how mind, body, spirit and faith are truly united.

Keynote speakers at the event from across the sporting spectrum include Jason Gardener MBE, Silver Paralympic Medalist, Stefanie Reid and Gold Special Olympic Medalist, Peter Loftus will lead presentations, conversations and ideas for how sport can be a catalyst for living well in both society and church. The day will build on the legacy of the Olympics and Paralympics of London 2012 and comes in the run up to the 2014 Commonwealth Games.

Stefanie Reid, GB Silver Medalist at the 2012 Paralympics said: "You are venturing into new territory when you start examining the role of theology in elite sport. My faith should impact every aspect of my life, but what does that look like in practical terms in my sport? It is a difficult question, but one that I am excited to discuss with other leaders in faith and sport at this event".

The day aims to inspire those who attend and also equip them for when they return to their place of work and communities to encourage anyone of any ability to celebrate the expression of their spirit through participation in sport at all levels.

The conference is open to anyone to attend and everyone is very welcome. It is likely to be of particular interest to those working and participating in the field of education, the caring professions, pastoral care and sports.

This is a unique opportunity to discuss the connection between spirituality and all aspects of sport and how it is lived out through personal experience. Leading academics in the field of intellectual disability will also be presenting, including Professor John Swinton from the University of Aberdeen.
